1. Focus group
Our task was to ask some questions based on our questionnaire results to a focus group of
around five people in total.
1. What kind of music will your magazine focus on?
I told my focus group that my magazine would be focused on „Alternative‟ music as
that was the genre and on new and upcoming artists to keep ahead of other magazines.
Most of my group enjoyed „alternative‟ music and believed that focusing on new and
upcoming bands was a good idea. However one member suggested that “You should
to keep old bands in the magazine as well so you can entertain a wider target
audience”. I believe this was very good and informative advice.
2. What will your magazine be called?
I gave a list of names for my magazine and these were „Alternative‟,‟ Sound‟ and
„Now‟. My focus group all decided that „Alternative‟ was the best name as it instantly
told you what genre of music the magazine was going to be about. They also said that
the other two names “sound boring” and that the name „Now‟ “sounds more like a hip
hop name not an alternative magazines name”.
3. Will you feature a single artist or a band on your Front Cover?
I gave my focus group the list of artists from my questionnaire and all of them had at
least heard of four or more of the groups or artists and likes at least two or more
music. They suggested that I should have a single artist on the front so it draws more
attention and is less crowded and if I‟m doing a group as a main feature then I should
put the main person in the group at the front.
4. What kind of article will be on your double page spread?
I told my focus group that my questionnaire results have shown me that an article on
festivals would be the most popular and they all agreed that my double page spread
should be on festivals as there are lots coming up and many readers would want
advice and want to know about bands that will e there.
5. What colour scheme will your magazine have?
I told my focus group that the three most popular colours from my questionnaire were
red, white and black. Most of the people said I should have all three in my magazine
however one member suggested I do my magazine in sepia tones at that seems a more
alternative style and links with the name. They also suggested that I use white font to
make it the font stand out. I think I shall take on this person‟s advice instead f my
questionnaire results as it sounds like a much better and creative idea.
6. How much will it cost?
My focus group agreed that the price should be £2 as it seems like a reasonable price
for a music magazine with lots of content in it.
