As hair specialists, KSL Hair have heard all the weird, wonderful and plain outlandish myths behind hair loss and hair care, and we’d like to set some of them to rest!
- 3. www.kslhair.com Losing your hair means you’re getting old Whilst hair loss becomes more common with age, it’s far from a simple equation. Many causes of hair loss can affect young people; Alopecia Areata, for example, is common in children and young people, and can cause complete hair loss.
- 4. www.kslhair.com Only men suffer from hair loss Hair loss is often thought of as a male problem – which can make it even worse for the 30-40% of women who will suffer hair thinning or loss during their lifetime. Female pattern hair loss tends to be thinning at the top of the head or a widening parting, rather than a receding hairline.
- 5. www.kslhair.com Washing your hair too much will make it fall out If you’re leaving a few hairs behind in the shower, relax – they’re meant to fall out. Hair naturally grows, falls out and is replaced in a cycle that takes a few years. You don’t suffer hair loss because your hair is falling out, but because it’s not being replaced at the same speed.

Increase the blood flow to your head, and your hair will grow. But if that’s the case, wouldn’t we all have hairy hobbit feet?
- 7. www.kslhair.com Wearing a hat can make your hair fall out Some say that wearing a hat starves the hair follicle of oxygen, making it fall out. Your follicles get their oxygen from the blood stream, so your hat’s not at fault. Others say that the hat rubbing on the hair will break it – but that would only break the hair. It won’t affect the follicle, so it’ll grow back.

It’s true that there are genetic factors in many types of hair loss; around 200 genes have been identified which are thought to have a role in hair growth and loss. Not all of them are passed down through the maternal line, however, so if there’s any genetic “blame” your dad likely played a part too.
- 9. www.kslhair.com Hair loss is linked to high testosterone This is one that’s nearly true – but not quite. Testosterone does play a role in hair loss, but it’s sensitivity that’s the issue. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) can cause sensitive hair follicles to shrink and eventually disappear. This will happen however much testosterone is in your body – but high levels can exacerbate the effect.
