Factual Product- Guardians of the Galaxy
The products purpose of the Behind the scenes footage is to inform the audience on how
the film was made. The product can easily be entertaining because there could be certain
actors who play the characters in the film which are interviewed so the audience can hear
what the actors have to say about the film and they can also find out what the director has
to say when making the film and who was involved in the creation of the film. For example
when they are showing how Rocket moved around the set by crouching down. This was
entertaining as it makes the audience intrigued by what they have seen and it also answers
some of those questions which they could be asking when they first went to see the film.
The products also been used to educate the audience about the film, the audience will find
that with the vast use of behind the scene footage, for example when they are showing how
they made Groot and Rocket. This would be beneficial because the audience may not have
known how the characters were created. This gives a sense of satisfactory because it is
informative and it educates the audience. One other example of where it is educational is
where they show the characters voice overs in the studio; this is where they talk about the
characters and where you look at how the audio is added into the film. This is also beneficial
because the audience is then informed on how they implemented sound into the CGI
characters.
The purpose of the film is to persuade this could be done in order to show the audience
how the film was made. It’s persuasive because the bonus feature from the DVD gives you
factual information, this is beneficial because it may persuade the audience to purchase
other content within the marvel franchise and it also increases the advertising of Guardians
of the Galaxy Comics and other merchandise.
The product is used to promote the film franchise of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise,
this could include other merchandise. For example in the Bonus feature it talks about how
the film was made and how certain actions were done with regards to CGI ,it also explains
the way in which the sound was implemented when the film was being created with the
characters like Rocket and Groot who were created with CGI. One other way it helps to
promote the product is that it shows different aspects of the personalities of the actors and
you might come across something different that you didn’t know before.
Age-
The products with regards to age would be probably aimed at the age range of 12-25 year
olds as this was the primary age range for the film, this could be because the film had
aspirational characters, it could be because the plot of the film is fairly simple and it is easy
to understand. The filmis Good vs. Evil which is a fairly easy plot to understand. This could
be the reason why they would want to find out more aspects about the film and what had
to be done in order to create the film. For example they may want to find out how CGI was
made or how they created the prison fight scene.
Gender-
The Gender of who would watch the product could be similar to those who watch the film,
for example the gender which watched the filmthe most was the Male gender. This could
mean that the bonus feature of the film could mostly be aimed at the Male audience as the
statistics show that they watched the film the most. However maybe the bonus feature on
the DVD which could’ve been used to interest Females in order to either get them
interested into the film or to also promote the secondary audience which was a Female
audience. As the actress who played Gamora was a strong representation of Women.
Ethnicity-
The Product in terms of Ethnicity would mostly be aimed at the white ethnic background as
the majority of the people who watched the film was from a white background. So this
could affect who may watch the Bonus feature on Guardians of the galaxy. Seen as though
the majority of the people who watched the film were White. Also within the content of the
bonus feature is that the majority of the cast that was interviewed were mainly white which
could show some form of bias in the filmand the bonus feature.
Psychographic-
The psychographics of the Bonus feature of Guardians of the galaxy are that it is a Belonger,
this means that the people who live in a small city will respond to the messages which are
given in the film and the whole production, this could also include things which are
referenced to family or community oriented aspects which may inspire the audience. For
example as the product was made in the UK so this means that it would have brought a new
audience together with the Marvel Franchise and it would also mean that those who live in
that area would easily be inspired and belongers are usually loyal to the brand. One other
group of Psychographic which maybe loyal to the brand are those who want to appear as an
achiever to attract the opposite sex or the approval of their peers. They respond to
messages about making them seem more successful and becoming Achievers.
Social Class-
The products audience as to which the filmwas mostly aimed at In terms of Social grades on
category a is the Upper class 4% watched the film. In Category B which is middle class 23%
managed to watch the film, Lower middle class 29% watched the film. One other example of
social grade who watched the filmis the skilled working class this was 21%, one other
category of social class was targeted is the working class 15% of people watched this film.
The lowest level of substance this includes normal workers or pensioners which was 8%. All
these social classes could have an impact on who watched the Bonus feature in the film and
the social class who watched it the most was the working class this could indicate on who is
interested in it the most.
Type of product-
The product what I’ve seen looks to be more of an Interview style product this is indicated
from the questions which they ask in order to find out more information about the film, also
the answers are fairly formal which is why you could say it gives you a reportage sort of style
to the Bonus feature. One other aspect you notice from when they ask the questions it’s
almost like a Observational sort of Product as they go up to the actors and want to find out
more about the filmin an informal way. This could be used in order for it to appeal to all
audiences who are interested in watching the documentary on how the Film was made.
Mode of address-
The product contains many elements of direct address for example, when they are talking
about how CGI is made they are referencing directly to the audience by talking about all the
specifics which are included into the production of it. Also within the bonus feature of the
production there is a small section of casual language and formal language, there is only a
bit of casual language when they are interviewing all the Actors. An example of where the
section of formal language is used is where the producer starts to talk about the Film and on
how they made the film, also in some cases when they start to interview James Gunn he
uses a mixture of casual language and formal language.
These different styles of address are used for audience appeal because with the different
uses of language it can appeal to all audiences no matter what social class or how good they
are at understanding the language as it makes the product more appealing. One other
reason as to why it has been used for audience appeal is the way that James Gunn uses both
types language to make it easy understand and for it to be clear towards the audience. If
James didn’t use both languages, the audience wouldn’t be able to understand the product.
This means that the audience wouldn’t be bothered about sharing the content around to
interest others.
Objective or Subjective-
I think that the Product of Guardians of the Galaxy is trying to advertise more about the film
so that it can try and get more people to invest in more of Marvel Franchises products such
as comics, Films and other merchandise. They could also be using it in order to represent
the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise as many people didn’t recognise the product.
However I also think that the product is trying to convince us to look into the Marvel
Franchise as the content in the film is near enough appropriate for all ages and all social
classes. To add to this I also think that there are hidden messages which they are trying to
convey, for example when the producer talks about why the Raccoons are in the Film it
brings a whole new theme to the idea when James Gunn brings real Raccoons to the film
premiere.
Structure and content-
The content which the product includes is informative as it helps educate the audience on
how the film was made; it also includes content which could be beneficial for all ages. One
other aspect the Bonus feature contains is Reality segments, this is when they are talking to
all the cast in order to get more points of view on the film. Another aspect it includes is
Humour for example when they are talking to the cast and they talk about their input in the
film. Another aspect which the bonus film contains is interview clips. This is put in order to
provide some entertainment for the audience as may include some of their favourite actors
which they aspire to be like. Also with the vast use of clips in order to inform instead of
explaining how the product was made it’s sometimes best to show evidence so that the
audience gets a good idea of what the filmis about. To add to this the use of dramatization
it adds more influence onto the production of the bonus feature which gives the audience a
whole new different dimension. I think that the producers included all this content in order
to show informative, entertaining as to which all audiences no matter where they are from
they can all relate to what goes on in the production. I also think that the producer used all
this content in order to help all audiences; this could include children, teenagers, adults and
pensioners. The content can also tie in with the Psychographics of the product. This includes
Belongers and Emmulators. It also links in with the user’s gratifications which it can separate
all the Personal identities, integration and social integration and finally Entertainment.
