Why is Pedestrian Safety Important?
• There are a lot of simple things you can do when
around the road and moving cars that go a long
way to prevent unintentional pedestrian injury.
• Learning these skills early helps to set in motion
habits of safety in these important areas of life.

• Keep looking as you cross the street.
• Walk across, do not run.

• Cross at a corner, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
• Try to make eye-contact with drivers before crossing in
front of them.
• Don’t assume that because you can see the driver, they

of a school bus, never behind, and to wait for
adults on the same side of the street as the
loading/unloading zone.

• This helps to be sure they are not rushing into traffic
without checking for cars first.
• Teach your child never to cross between parked
cars.
• Crossing in this way means you are unable to see
oncoming cars, and they are unable to see you.

• Make sure your child plays in a safe location, far away
from cars. Good examples of these places are:
• Yards
• Playgrounds
• Parks
• Be sure to fence off these play areas from streets
and driveways.

with retroreflective material to wear at dawn and
dusk, in the evenings, and other low-light
situations such as rain or fog.

distractions can be things like:
• Music/headphones
• Texting/other phone activities
• Playing games/rough-housing
• Activities like these pull your attention from the
road and moving cars and can result in
unintentional injury.

stop walking and find a safe area to talk.
• Away from the road.
• Not in the middle of a walkway.
• Be aware of others who may be distracted and
speak up when you see someone who is in
danger.
