We all know
Some plants flower in winter only
When days are short and nights long
Some flower in summer only
when nights are short and days long
but some plants just do not bother
when summer comes or winter goes
they flower when they feel like
all the time without any woes
curiosity impelled some scientists to know
How and why all this goes on on the fore
And they performed experiments to find out
What makes plants behave as they do day in & day out
In such vital matters as flowering
since hoary days of yore
They discovered that there are pigments in leaves
which are sensitive to different frequencies of light
The Phytochromes , the Cryptochromes ,the Phototropins
which sense Red/Infrared ,Blue /UV and Blue light rays

The Phytochromes come in two forms always
Pf and Pfr which are inter convertible in such a way
That the Pf is converted in Pfr when Sun rises & it is day
The Pfr is converted into Pf when it sets and it is night
The cryptochromes ensure that the bioclock,
which ticks in everybody all the time ,
entrains and there is due coordination
In light and time .
Thus they can ‘know’ when it is day or night
and measuring the length of light /dark period
by making Bio circadian clock entrain the light
they can judge whether it is time to flower
be it winter or summer time
and adjust their other chores accordingly with time .
Each variety has its own calendar
and follows its own time table
Hence it is possible to classify varieties
in Short day long day or day neutral plants .

So Now we know
How Plants and animals are able to ‘smell ’seasons
and get ready to welcome it at the right time
Christmas Cactus blooms at the Christmas time
as if it ‘knows’ Christmas is about to come!
Morning glory plants bloom early morning with the rising Sun
as if sun rays have gently woken them up ,-in fun!
But Jasmine the Rat ki rani prefers to flower at night
as if star rays kiss and care for them very much
Ten- o -clock plant knows when it is 10 –o-clock to bloom
as if it knows the office going baboo’s time to chime
Gulaebans plant flowers at 5 pm daily
as if it knows when the evening begins .
All this happens automatically daily
as photoperiodism guides, playing its role sincerely.

Cryptochromeand Opsins , sensorsof changes
in duration of light/darkness, are major players
entraining Bioclockto light and initiating
secretionof hormones causing
morphological, physiologicaland behavioral changes
preparingthem for the next stage
in their lifecycle, at the righttime.
In fact
Migration ,hibernation, reproduction
molting of fur and feathers ,antlers,
bird’ssinging etc all owe without distinction
creditto this wonderfulphenomenon.

Arctic Tern knows when time to migrate approaches
Gets ready and flies away to south at the right time
Bears get ready to hibernate in time
and go to sleep in their den when winter comes
Arctic foxes and hare change their coats when seasons change
From snow white to brown and back to white
as the year rolls on time to time.
Examples can be multiplied to show
That all plants and animals know
the calendar ,thanks to light sensing molecules
and the bio clock embedded in them
enabling them to get ready and follow the time table
which their lifecycle has prescribed for them..

Jeev jagat We all know Some plants flower in winter only When days are short and nights long Some flower in summer only when nights are short and days long but some plants just do not bother when summer comes or winter goes they flower when they feel like all the time without any woes curiosity impelled some scientists to know How and why all this goes on on the fore And they performed experiments to find out What makes plants behave as they do day in & day out In such vital matters as flowering since hoary days of yore They discovered that there are pigments in leaves which are sensitive to different frequencies of light The Phytochromes , the Cryptochromes ,the Phototropins which sense Red/Infrared ,Blue /UV and Blue light rays

Jeev jagat The Phytochromes come in two forms always Pf and Pfr which are inter convertible in such a way That the Pf is converted in Pfr when Sun rises & it is day The Pfr is converted into Pf when it sets and it is night The cryptochromes ensure that the bioclock, which ticks in everybody all the time , entrains and there is due coordination In light and time . Thus they can ‘know’ when it is day or night and measuring the length of light /dark period by making Bio circadian clock entrain the light they can judge whether it is time to flower be it winter or summer time and adjust their other chores accordingly with time . Each variety has its own calendar and follows its own time table Hence it is possible to classify varieties in Short day long day or day neutral plants .

Jeev Jagat So Now we know How Plants and animals are able to ‘smell ’seasons and get ready to welcome it at the right time Christmas Cactus blooms at the Christmas time as if it ‘knows’ Christmas is about to come! Morning glory plants bloom early morning with the rising Sun as if sun rays have gently woken them up ,-in fun! But Jasmine the Rat ki rani prefers to flower at night as if star rays kiss and care for them very much Ten- o -clock plant knows when it is 10 –o-clock to bloom as if it knows the office going baboo’s time to chime Gulaebans plant flowers at 5 pm daily as if it knows when the evening begins . All this happens automatically daily as photoperiodism guides, playing its role sincerely.

Jeeev Jagat In animals Photosensitivemoleculeslike Cryptochromeand Opsins , sensorsof changes in duration of light/darkness, are major players entraining Bioclockto light and initiating secretionof hormones causing morphological, physiologicaland behavioral changes preparingthem for the next stage in their lifecycle, at the righttime. In fact Migration ,hibernation, reproduction molting of fur and feathers ,antlers, bird’ssinging etc all owe without distinction creditto this wonderfulphenomenon.

Jeev jagat Arctic Tern knows when time to migrate approaches Gets ready and flies away to south at the right time Bears get ready to hibernate in time and go to sleep in their den when winter comes Arctic foxes and hare change their coats when seasons change From snow white to brown and back to white as the year rolls on time to time. Examples can be multiplied to show That all plants and animals know the calendar ,thanks to light sensing molecules and the bio clock embedded in them enabling them to get ready and follow the time table which their lifecycle has prescribed for them.. ----------------- ----
