2. Definition
• Literal: To make intention
• Terminological: To make journey to Makkah to
visit House of Allah and perform some
prescribed acts.
3. OBLIGATION:
It is obligatory once a life on a Muslim, male/female who:
1- Is adult
2- Is mentally normal
3- Has resources:
i-Expenses for journey, accommodation in Hajj places,
family behind,
İi- Healthy enough to travel
İii- Passage towards Makkah is safe
iv- Company of husband or any of Muharram relatives
for woman
“And pilgrimage to House is a duty to Allah for all who
can make the journey” (Al-Imran:97)
4. Acts of Hajj: (حج )مناسك:
1. Ihram ()احرام: Intention of Hajj. This is demonstrated by wearing
two piece cloth preferably of white colour and saying ().
2. Meeqat ()ميقات: Ultimate point for making niyet of Hajj.
3. Talbia: Saying of (لبيك اللهم )لبيك
4. Tawaf ()طواف: Circumambulating round Kaa’bah 7 circles.
5. Sa’ee ()سعي: Running between two hills the Safa and Marwah.
6. Wuquf-e-Arafah (عرفة )وقوف: Staying at Arafat valley on 9th of
Zulhajj
7. Nahr ()نحر: Slaughtering of animal
8. Ramyul Jimaar (الجمار )رمي: Throwing pebbles at three stones
symbolizing the Devil
9. Halq/Taqseer ( حلق

تقصير ): Shaving/Trimming the hair of head.
5. ISLAMIC REFORMS IN HAJJ:
1. Islam forbade all indecent acts during Hajj (Al-Bakarah:197)
2. Staying at Arafat valley was made obligatory for all (Al-
Bakarah:199)
3. Placing of blood and flesh of slaughtered animals on walls of
Kaa’ba was prohibited (Al-Hajj: 37)
4. Taking food and other basic necessities during Hajj journey was
announced as legal (Al-Bakara: 197)
5. Making Tawaf nakedly was banned (Al-A’Raf: 31)
6. Sa’ee was made obligatory for all (Al-Bakara: 158)
7. Umrah was allowed during Hajj days (Al-Bakara: 196)
8. Trade was announced legal during Hajj days (Al-Bakara: 198)
9. Entering home from back doors was discouraged during Hajj
journey (Al-Bakara:189)
6. Benefits of Hajj:
1. It teaches humbleness and simplicity
2. It creates equality, unity and international
brotherhood among Muslims.
3. It displays a picture of complete surrender to Allah
4. It is display of love and devotion to Allah
5. It teaches us to sacrifice the most beloved thing in the
way of Allah
6. It is largest annual peaceful convention of Muslims
7. It provides us opportunity to visit sacred places
8. It purifies soul
9. It reminds resurrection and day of judgment
