In what way does your media product
use, develop or challenge form and
conventions of real media products.
• In my media short film, I included many key codes and conventions within the
setting. This includes an eerie atmosphere, with abandoned/ derelict buildings.
It is based within the woods and near a scary narrow road
which contains ancient, rusty ‘beware’ signs and fences
which gives of conations of a post apocalyptic genre film.
• There is a small stream which is very significant as it can
be used as a source of water for the
character.
• Along with the man made post apocalyptic signs, nature was in our advantage
due to the fact the dull grey trees and flowing water created an abandoned
setting. The fallen orange and brown leaves represents death which is very
ideal for my film. We related this to the film ‘the road’ and ‘the revenant’ which
have similar settings to our film.
• Within my short film, I have included many props which give
automatically tell the audience that the film is post apocalyptic. For
example I was wearing a gas mask throughout the whole of my opening
scene which is a necessary item of clothing for me to survive through
the gasses and disease spread around the location.
• We also used litter/ old rubbish to symbolise the struggle for food.
Everything is taken and getting important resources like food and
water is a main priority.
• The antagonist carried a hammer throughput the film to pose a threat
to other characters and to use ait as a tool for surviving. It links to post
apocalyptic films as it represented how desperate people are to
survive. This again relates to ‘the road’ as the father is constantly
carrying around a gun as protection and as a hunting weapon.
My film The road
• The main character wore a camouflage jacket and distressed jeans. The
jacket will help to blend in to the surroundings making it useful for
survival. Also the jeans highlight the trouble he is in and the extremely
small amounts off resources available .
• Accessories like masks were worn by both characters to give off a sense
of mystery within our film. The gas mask was for survival purposes, but
the antagonists mask was used to hide identity. This was linked to the
wanted poster scene as the start of my film ands then when the
antagonist took off the mask at the end of the film. It gives a scene of
dramatic irony in the audience. Also the mask the antagonist was
wearing makes the audience ask questions about why he doesn’t need a
gas mask. This relates to the supernatural and paranormal which is in
many other post apocalyptic films. For example zombie land and 28
days later.
The world’s resources are coming to a complete ‘end’ and only few species of animals
are surviving. One of the species being humans; or in different form ‘mankind’. The film
is set in the future in one of the few existing, isolated villages in the world; however the
town has no resources so the humans that live there rely on slaughtering each other to
preserve the remains of the world’s resources, Such as water and food. The short film
will pursue the life of a single man, ‘Will Pattison’ as he tries to remain in this survival
game. What’s left of the world has just gone through a highly toxic flu, which destroyed
most of the remaining species and power plants releasing radioactive materials. With
the air being filled with highly toxic diseases and gases anyone who has survived the
past 5 years of the 'exhaustion’ needs to wear essential survival clothes and gear, but
would be lucky if they were without wear and tear. Such as a gas mask, to establish he
manages to survive the destruction from the polluted air.
The main character (protagonist) is white whilst the antagonist is black.
This creates an effect of binary opposites between colour of skin and
stereotypes. white people are stereotypically seen as : good, pure hero's
and strong. however black people can be seen as : tribal, poor and
criminals. mask gets taken off, extreme close up of eyes in mask then
zoom out to see the mask and Saige (the antagonist) behind me. then
another extreme close up of my eyes, and then zoom out to see the mask
has been taken off, and then seeing me slowly dyeing
This is the opposite compared to the book of Eli. This is because the
main character ‘Eli’, classed as the protagonist is black, whereas the
antagonist is white. Within the book of Eli the white antagonist look
down on him as if he is worthless and not important, however Eli is
extremely intelligent and able to fight well. This displays that racism is
a key feature to many pots apocalyptic and that you shouldn’t judge
somebody on there colour of skin. However this is also similar to my
opening film ‘Fundamental’ due to the fact the protagonist who is white,
under estimated the black charter he is stealing from.
• Many close ups where used to represent the trouble and the fight for
survival the character is in. At the beginning of the film there is a close
up of an abandoned beware sign to amplify the post apocalyptic setting
he is in. Then suddenly changed to a mid shot of an old barbed wire
fence within me approaching the camera which causes the mid shot to
change to a close up which clearly shows of my gas mask.
• Other camera angles were used like long shots of the main character to
show the antagonist in the background. This is used to build tension
within the audience.
• Towards the ending of my film. We used high shots on the main
character looking through the stolen bag. This was to make him look
powerless and weak, which links to his death at the end of the film.
• Within my short film many edits were used to help build a tense
atmosphere within the audience and to construct a fast pace.
• Many wipes were used to build speed within many parts of my short
film. It helps put to scenes together without seeing an obvious cut. It
creates a smooth cut as well as making it seem fast pacing, so I used it
during the running scene, so that when the object entirely filled the
screen the movie had "wiped" the last shot of the previous scene and
begun the first shot of the next. To construct it, it is very low budget
and easy to complete, however is very effective.
• Another shot which was used was a jump cut. This was once again used
to form a fast pace towards the film by speeding up a long scene. Each
cut was cut in time with the music which engages the audience in to the
film more.
•
The music in my film has been specifically chosen to match the genre of my film
which is a post apocalyptic, setting the tone throughout the duration of the film. The
music in my film is non-copyright therefore no issues should occur as a result of the
music used; the song is called ‘dramatic Apocalypse music (the wasteland)’. The
music in my film mysterious, dramatic and adventurous which ties in to the thought
of the world effectively coming to an end. It also helps to add to the effect of the
characters lifestyles. The dramatic sounds contribute to the chasing of one character
and the dramatic movements of the two. It is sad in a way due to the males both
changing in order to adapt as the audience would know that the two characters in
my film were never originally living like this. The fast tempo of the music also builds
tension and creates a sense of danger within the audience. It engages them in to the
film more as the music flows nicely with the clips. The weapon one character is
holding signifies that he is willing to harm or even kill the other character for
stealing his survival pack which is a very dramatic situation especially involving the
chase scene. Besides the dramatic apocalyptic music, my film has natural diegetic
sounds within it too to add effect to the actions characters are doing, for example
the trudging foot steps of a character is heard when he runs on the train tracks in
my film.
• My track also included many abnormal sound effects which I timed my clips with to
create a clicking sound effect. My clips were quickly flashing to the fast beats of the
sound effects. This creates an eerie and scary atmosphere, but still looking post
apocalyptic with the background scenes

It creates a smooth cut as well as making it seem fast pacing, so I used it during the running scene, so that when the object entirely filled the screen the movie had "wiped" the last shot of the previous scene and begun the first shot of the next. To construct it, it is very low budget and easy to complete, however is very effective. • Another shot which was used was a jump cut. This was once again used to form a fast pace towards the film by speeding up a long scene. Each cut was cut in time with the music which engages the audience in to the film more.

The music in my film is non-copyright therefore no issues should occur as a result of the music used; the song is called ‘dramatic Apocalypse music (the wasteland)’. The music in my film mysterious, dramatic and adventurous which ties in to the thought of the world effectively coming to an end. It also helps to add to the effect of the characters lifestyles. The dramatic sounds contribute to the chasing of one character and the dramatic movements of the two. It is sad in a way due to the males both changing in order to adapt as the audience would know that the two characters in my film were never originally living like this. The fast tempo of the music also builds tension and creates a sense of danger within the audience. It engages them in to the film more as the music flows nicely with the clips. The weapon one character is holding signifies that he is willing to harm or even kill the other character for stealing his survival pack which is a very dramatic situation especially involving the chase scene. Besides the dramatic apocalyptic music, my film has natural diegetic sounds within it too to add effect to the actions characters are doing, for example the trudging foot steps of a character is heard when he runs on the train tracks in my film. • My track also included many abnormal sound effects which I timed my clips with to create a clicking sound effect. My clips were quickly flashing to the fast beats of the sound effects. This creates an eerie and scary atmosphere, but still looking post apocalyptic with the background scenes
