representations
During my planning stage I made sure that my character was dressed very
much similar to a typical film noir characters in the way they are dressed, and
the way they act and my main protagonist (Jake Smith) is dressed quite similar
to Harry Lime from The Third Man. For example they both wear dark jackets,
and a suit to show their profession. In film noir characters are often defined by
how they cooperate with objects, and I wanted to imply that my character wasn't
very considerate and very much aggressive. I was able to do this by using a
office scene, with the way the way I organised the desk and what he wore and
how he wore it during that scene.
As you can see in the above image, the desk is very untidy with bits of paper
laying around everywhere, and as for the way he is dressed, he has a loose tie,
Character representations
During my research stage I have looked into type of characters that there are in
film noir. And taking into account of I have learned from my research, I have
made sure that I have applied these convention into my film opening.
Although I had one main protagonist in my film opening I made sure that I at least
include the Femme fatale.
Within film noir a the typical femme fatale uses her seductiveness to manipulate
men, but I challenged this convention by presenting the Femme fatale as the
victim. However, through the protagonist narration you can still sense the
attraction he has toward her beauty. And in order to show this I decided to
dress the femme fatale in a shirt, which shows her neck and dark lips stick
making her look seductive, and I used a close up of her face to show her
beauty.
Location
Location for a film noir production is most often, dark and abandoned to make the
characters seem more vulnerable when they are there. Most film noirs are set in the
50s so the location is usually small and quaint looking.
 Here is my choices of location:
West Harrow
park
I chose to film some of my scene in West Harrow during the night, my purpose for doing this is to
show isolation, which work very well.
Mis-en-scene
At the start of the year, I researched into the lighting and
camera angles for mis-en-scene of film noir.
My choice of location helped me with lighting because I was
filming during the night, the park was dark and lonely,
therefore the light were very bright and having this kind of
lighting gives the scene more of a tense atmosphere.
Props
One of my main props for film opening was the JD bottle. It could be
said that having the JD bottle demonstrates a particular group,
which would be those who enjoy drinking alcohol.
Semiotic representations through
sound
One of the main semiotic representations through
sound for film noir is jazz music, originally I have jazz
music playing in the background of the opening
credits for my film opening, if you look at this post,
which shows my final sounds for my film you’ll see a
YouTube video in it is the jazz piece
Another common semiotic representation is voice-
overs, they are used quite a bit in film noir’s because
they set the mood. Which as you can see in the
previous slide, we included a voice-over in ours.
The target audience
My choice of target audience was a mix between
Impulsive Materialist and Impressionable Socialites.
Our main consumers are people who have heard
about the film from another, seen a trailer for the film
and enjoyed it, or who are going with their friends to
watch it.
