2. WHAT IS PROJECT LOON?
Project loon is a research and development project
being developed by GOOGLE. It is a network of
balloons travelling on the edge of space ,designed to
provide ubiquitous internet connectivity in rural and
remote areas , helping fill coverage gaps , and
bringing people back online after natural disasters.
3. WHY LOON?
• Today only 2.7 billion people-little more than one third of the
world’s population-have Internet access.
• The most important factor is the scarcity revolution.
• Even though there are more than 1 billion smartphone
subscribers in the world, the majority of them still don’t
have data access due to the costly data plan in many
countries.
4. HOW LOON WORKS?
o The balloon float in stratosphere , twice as high as airplanes and
weather.
o Project Loon balloons travel around 20km above the earth’s
surface in the stratosphere.
o The setup uses software algorithms to determine where its
balloons need to go ,then moves each one into layer of wind
blowing in right direction.
.
5. CONNECTIVITY !!
• People connect to the network using a special internet
antenna attached to their building.
• The signal bounces from balloon to balloon ,which then
provides a connection back down to earth.
• Project Loon is partnering with telecommunication
companies to extend connectivity so that people
everywhere will be able to access the Internet directly
from their phones and other LTE(4G) devices.
7. ENGINEERING CHALLENGES!
• Moving of balloons in the stratosphere
possess many challenge:
Air pressure is 1% of that at sea level.
Temperature hover around -50 degree celcius.
A thinner atmosphere offers less protection
from the UV radiation and temperature
swings caused the sun’s rays.
Suitable because this sphere is having steady
stratospheric winds.
8. LOON DESIGN
• There exist three main
components of the loon:
Envelope
Solar panels
Equipment
9. ENVELOPE
They are made from sheets of polyethylene plastic and stand 15mt.
wide by 12mt. Tall when fully inflated.
10. SOLAR PANELS
Each unit’s electronics are powered by an array of solar panels
that sit between the envelope and the hardware.
Panels produce 100 Watts of power.
Use renewable energy sources.
12. HOW PROJECT LOON AFFECTS INDIA?
• 1. An option for connecting rural, remote and undeserved areas and
for helping with communications after natural disasters.
• 2. Education for all
• 3. Information for all
• 4.Costs
• 5.Employment
13. ADVANTAGES
• Availability of Information.
• Education.
• Health and medicine
• Use of Renewable Energy.
• Collaboration.
