TECHNOLOGY & SCIENCE.
WHAT IS PROJECT
LOON?
•Project loon is a network of
balloons travelling on the edge of
space , that is designed to connect
people with internet.
INTRODUCTION
•Project loon is a research and development
project.
•It is provided by google with the mission of
providing internet to rural and remote areas
•The project uses high altitude balloons placed
in the stratosphere at an altitude of about
20km to create an aerial wireless network with
HOW LOON MOVES
 Project loon balloons travel
around 65,000 feet above the
earth surface in the
stratosphere.
 Winds in the stratosphere are
generally steady and slow
moving at between 5 and 20
mph, and each layer of wind
varies in direction.
DESIGN
ENVELOPE
 The inflatable part of the
balloon is made of
polyethylene plastic
material and filled with
helium.
 The balloon height is
12m and width is 15m.
 A parachute is attached
to the top of the envelop,
which is used for bringing
down the balloon safely.
SOLAR PANELS
•Each unit’s electronics are powered by an array
of solar panels that present between the
envelop and the hardware.
•By moving with the wind and charging in the
sun, project loon is able to power itself using
only renewable energy resources.
•In full sun these panels produce 100 watts of
power-enough to keep unit running while also
charging a battery for use at night.
EQUIPMENT
• A small box containing
the balloons electronic
equipment.
• Radio antennas to
communicate with other
balloons and with internet
antennas on the ground.
• Batteries to store solar
power.
HOWLOON CONNECTS
•Each balloon has radio antenna that provides
constant connectivity to the ground and
connects each balloon to other balloon.
•There is a special ground antenna that is
installed on the home or workplace to access
the internet from balloon.
•Google claims that each balloon can provide
signal connectivity to a ground area about
40km in diameter and able to deliver 3G
comparable speeds.
APPLICATIONS
•Education : There are millions of poor children all
over the world who haven’t even heard the word
school .loon has the potential to become a school
on the air for the under privilege.
•Medicine : Health and hygiene information can be
made easily available to the people who haven’t
even heard of the word doctor.
•Collaboration: Connecting with the remote
countries and terrains will possible and it’ll
eliminate the cables in those areas.
