SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING IS A VISIONARY WORLD
WHERE ALL THE PACKAGING IS SOURCED RESPONSIBLY,
DESIGNED TO BE EFFECTIVE AND SAFE THROUGH OUT
THE CYCLE,
MEETS CRITERIA FOR PERFORMANCE AND COST, IS
MADE ENTIRELY USING RENEWABLE RESOURCES,AND
ONCE USED,IS RECYCLED EFFICIENTLY TO PROVIDE
VALUABLE RESOURCE FOR SUBSEQUENT GENERATION.
IN SUMMARY : A TRUE CLOSED LOOP FOR SYSTEM FOR
ALL USED MATERIALS .
●) WWF’s Living Planet Report, which
is a biannual analysis of the carrying
capacity of the globe compared with
resource consumption, our current
approaches to production and
consumption are not sustainable:
Population x Consumption > Planet
●) It is estimated that current
demand for the Earth’s resources is
1.25 times what scientists believe
our planet can sustain.
●Because of the anxiety over our
depleting resources, single-use,
disposable packaging has been
targeted as a sign of our over-
consumptive society, and
irresponsibility
towards environment.
●Think bag bans, plastic bottles,

PAPER
GLASS
PLASTIC
1)Paper Alternatives:-
i)Kenaf. Kenaf, a cousin to the cotton plant, uses 15-25% less energy than pine
to make pulp.
ii)Bamboo. This fast-growing grass produces 4 to 5 times the fiber of the
fastest-growing commercial tree species.
2)Production developments:-
i)Biopulping-:The disadvantages associated with pulping methods are they
cause a foul smell and end up partially in the wastewater & exhaust gases.
More fundamentally, these chemicals degrade lignin and hemi-cellulose, so that
only 50% of the initial biomass is effectively used to make paper.
A biotechnology-based process, called biopulping, has been developed to
eliminate the use of these environmentally harsh compounds. Biopulping is
based on enzymes which selectively degrade and dissolve the wood gluing
compounds. The mechanism is much like the conventional chemical process
but without the need for high cooking temperatures and without the use of
chemicals.
Conservation of wood fiber is not only associated to production efficiency and
alternate raw materials , sustainability can be achieved by modern design
techniques also.
Design is an very important aspect of sustainable packaging, Wall Mart used
such designs for the product ”Hamburger Helper”, to save huge quantity of
paper fiber
The noodles were straightened ,meaning the product could lie flatter in the box(
cut the number of unique pasta shapes in half and increased the density of the
pasta shapes) :
1)Reduced the size of Hamburger Helper packages by 20 percent while keeping
the same amount of product
2)Saved nearly 900,000 pounds of paper fiber annually.
3)Reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 11 percent,
4)Took 500 trucks off the road
1)Alternate Raw materials->Cullet
Cullet is the most important part of the sustainable part of the glass
manufacturing process, Glass that is crushed and ready to be re-melted is
called cullet, Every metric ton (1,000 kg) of waste glass recycled into new
items saves 315 kilograms (694 lb) of carbon dioxide from being released into
the atmosphere during the creation of new glass.
In manufacturing, cullet requires less energy to melt than does raw materials
and lower temps, extending the lifespan of furnaces and related equipment
2)Production Methods-> Submerged Combustion Melting (SCM), In
submerged combustion melting, fuels are fired directly into and under the
surface of the batch material being melted. Placing the burners in the bottom of
the glass furnace results in improved heat transfer and vigorous convective
stirring of the melt.
The reduction of Energy is achieved by reduction in residence time in the
furnace, it reduces the consumption by 5-7.5% compared to Oxy-fuel furnace.
Increasing the cullet share by 10% (based on weight) reduces net energy
consumption by 2-3.5%.
The following graph from saint gobain sustainability report shows the
reduction in energy consumption in which cullet is preheated to 530°F,
reducing electric boosting by 60% (or 90 kWh/tonne) and natural gas use
by 8% per year (or 0.3 MMBtu/ton) & resulting in a payback period of 2.6
years at natural gas prices of $3.8/MMBtu and electricity prices of 0.05
$/kWh in their European installation.
Bioplastics are plastics derived from renewable biomass sources, such
as vegetable fats and oils, corn starch, . Bioplastic can be made from
agricultural by-products and also from used plastic bottles and other
containers using microorganisms. Bioplastics can be composed
of starches, cellulose, biopolymers, and a variety of other materials.
Bioplastics are classified as-
a. Starch-based plastics
b. Cellulose-based plastics
c. Some aliphatic polyesters
 Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB)
 Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA)
 Polylactic acid (PLA)-> Polylactic acid (PLA) is a transparent
plasticproduced from corn or dextrose. Its characteristics are similar to
conventional petrochemical-based mass plastics (like PET, PS or PE),
and it can be processed using standard equipment that already exists for
the production of some conventional plastics.

●The $30.8 billion bio plastics market will grow at a
compound annual growth rate of 14.8 percent from 2015 to
2020, major driver role will be played by environmental
concerns and packaging sector -A report for the Bio-based
and Biodegradable Industries
Association (BBIA)
October 2015.
●Case study of TETRA PAK’S BIO PLASTIC
DEVELOPMENT.
A new version of Tetra Pak’s sustainable packaging — a
carton bottle made up of more than 80 percent renewable
materials. The Tetra Top package now comes with a cap
and top made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE)
derived from sugarcane. an independent life cycle analysis
found the new water bottle saves from 47 percent to 74
percent in carbon emissions compared to traditional light-
and heavy-weight PET bottles, respectively. This new
carbon bottle will have huge impact on food packaging
industry.
The needs and positive aspects of sustainable
packaging towards the environment are
unquestionably the need of the hour for our
planet.
Still criticism towards this idea has always
been there, the questions regarding the viability
of such an idea always has its doubts for ex:-
For example life cycle analysis(LCA) of many
products tend to show some serious concerns
of its recycling ,reusing scenarios.
Alternative resources are often seen to have
to serious impact when looked minutely , even
tough they reduce environmental worries as a
byproduct energy is used somewhere else to
bring the sustainability character to it.

Its characteristics are similar to conventional petrochemical-based mass plastics (like PET, PS or PE), and it can be processed using standard equipment that already exists for the production of some conventional plastics. Confectionery packaging made from PLA bends--
  • 16. ●The $30.8 billion bio plastics market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 14.8 percent from 2015 to 2020, major driver role will be played by environmental concerns and packaging sector -A report for the Bio-based and Biodegradable Industries Association (BBIA) October 2015. ●Case study of TETRA PAK’S BIO PLASTIC DEVELOPMENT. A new version of Tetra Pak’s sustainable packaging — a carton bottle made up of more than 80 percent renewable materials. The Tetra Top package now comes with a cap and top made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) derived from sugarcane. an independent life cycle analysis found the new water bottle saves from 47 percent to 74 percent in carbon emissions compared to traditional light- and heavy-weight PET bottles, respectively. This new carbon bottle will have huge impact on food packaging industry.
  • 17. The needs and positive aspects of sustainable packaging towards the environment are unquestionably the need of the hour for our planet. Still criticism towards this idea has always been there, the questions regarding the viability of such an idea always has its doubts for ex:- For example life cycle analysis(LCA) of many products tend to show some serious concerns of its recycling ,reusing scenarios. Alternative resources are often seen to have to serious impact when looked minutely , even tough they reduce environmental worries as a byproduct energy is used somewhere else to bring the sustainability character to it.
