Introduction
We the student of B.Sc Agricultural Engineering, Department of Farm power
and Machinery under the course of FPM 432 have done doing our industrial
training at Alim Industry Limited and Ahmed Cold Storage, BISCIC Industrial
Estate, Gutatikar, Sylhet at 10th April 2018. We reached Alim Industry Limited,
Sylhet, Bangladesh at 9.30 PM. After that we were welcomed with an
interesting beginning ceremony. Finally, we started our industrial training at
Alim Industry Limited. We Visited the whole workshop of Alim Industry
Limited. We also visited a privet owned cold storage named “M. Ahmed Cold
Storage”.
For being there, I have been trained to understand production line of agricultural
machinery. Get introduced with the raw materials and machinery used to
construct agricultural machinery like power tiller, thresher etc. At last, we had
been run one project which is to a tray by welding.
Besides that, we manage to visit “M. Ahmed Cold Storage”, to understand the
refrigeration cycle and the technique to preserve fruits like orange, grape etc.

Alim Industry Limited Visit
3.1 About Alim Industry Limited, Sylhet:
Alim Industries Ltd. was established in 1990 at the BISCIC Industrial Estate,
Gutatikar, Sylhet. Late M. A. Alim Chowdhury was the mastermind behind
establishment of the industry. In fact, the industry is the definitive manifestation
of his long-cherished ingenious vision of the founder.
Considering the unique local concentration of tea industry in Sylhet district, the
newly found industry specialized in tea processing machineries.
Simultaneous with manufacturing activities, the newly found Alim Industries
Ltd. also highlighted Agro-machineries Development and Research as a major
organizational objective for facing market challenges with a constantly updated
quality of services.
3.2 FINDINGS:

3.2.4 JOB PRACTICE:
We made a tray by welding the Engle and Sheet.
3.3 DIFFERENT SECTION OF THE INDUSTRY:
Total operation of the industry was divided into various section. A brief description of major
section is given below:
3.3.1 WORKSHOP:
Workshop has many different section based on their job.
3.3.1.1 CUTTING:
10. 10
In this section of workshop, workers are responsible for cutting various raw materials like
sheet, rod, flat bar etc. Thy uses various type of cutter to cut various type of metal. Among
them mechanical press cutter and gas cutter are significant.
3.3.1.2 MACHINE ROOM:
In the machine room they have a lot of lathe machine. As the quality of finish product largely
depends on the lathe machine, they use a bunch of technical labour to handle those machine.
Cutter used in lathe machine are: High speed cutter and Diamond cutter.
Besides, lathe machine they have shaper machine to provide desired finish of a certain parts.
3.3.1.3 WELDING:
In welding shop, they use arc welding to join the various parts of a machine.
3.3.1.4 ASSEMBLY:
In this section, all the machine parts are assembling together to send for painting section.
3.3.2 PAINTING:
In painting section there three phases
• Primary painting: To protect metal parts from corrosion
• Pudding: To provide good finish of the product.
• Yellow colour: Preparing final colour of the product
• Engine attachment: Engine or power source attached to provide final product
3.4 SHORTCOMING OF THE INDUSTRY:
In production line the industry has two strategies, one is to construct machinery and another
is to import parts and the assemble them.
Though some of their particular product like thresher are popular among the country they
have some space to improve. Especially the production line, where they use manual method
to construct a machine.
3.5 FUTURE PLAN OF THE INDUSTRY:
Industry is now working on to set up a CNC workshop, to reduce labour dependency, to
improve quality of the product, and to increase efficiency. They also have a strong intension
to work research organization to invent new machinery.

Chapter-4
Ahmad Cold Storage Visit
4.1 AHMED COLD STORAGE:
Ahmed Cold storage is used for preserving fruits, eggs and such other type of perishable
products which is situated in Gutatikor, Sylhet 3111. It was established in 1968. Deterioration
of fruits and vegetables during storage depends largely on temperature. One way to slow
down this change and so increase the length of time fruits and vegetables can be stored, is by
lowering the temperature to an appropriate level. In this case, cold storage is used to preserve
this product. In this cold storage, mainly products are preserved for consuming purpose not
seed purpose. Products are stored in three layers. Here products can be stored for both short
term (7-10 days) and long term (6-8 months). Fruits and eggs are stored for short term and
potatoes are stored for long term.
4.2DESIGN OF COLD STORAGE:
4.2.1 CONTROL ROOM:
From control room whole storage system is controlled. It consists of
compressor, condenser, expansion device and evaporator. Normally, ammonia
is used as refrigerant in cold storage. At first, the refrigerant passes through a
circuit which is divided into a high pressure portion and low pressure portion.
The pressure is maintained at different levels in the two parts of the system by
expansion valve at one point and by the compressor at another. The function
of the expansion valve is to allow the liquid refrigerant under high pressure to
pass at a controlled rate into the low pressure part of the system. In
evaporating, each pound of liquid refrigerant absorbs its latent heat of
vaporization. The function of the compressor is to increase the pressure of the
refrigerant vapour and discharge it into the condenser. In passing through the
condenser the refrigerant gives up the heat which is absorbed in the
evaporator.

4.2.2 PRE-COOLING CHAMBER:
Before keeping the product in cooling chamber, products are kept in the pre-cooling chamber.
Pre-cooling is done to remove the field heat of the harvested produce, which is detrimental to
keeping quality of fruits and vegetables and it is done to retard ripening and senescence
processes. Prompt pre-cooling conserves the weight and extends the storage life. In this
chamber temperature is about 45 degree Fahrenheit.
Methods of pre-cooling:
• Hydro Cooling
• Air –cooling or Room Cooling
• Vacuum Cooling
Following Methods are Adapted to Pre-cooling Fruits:
i) Air Cooling:
• The air cooling is done by placing the fruits in the cold room. Fruits are placed in well
ventilated containers in order to achieve some air exchange.
ii) Hydro-cooling:
13. 13
• The hydro-cooling is an old and effective pre-cooling method for fruits. Fruits are
dipped in cold water or spray the cold water on the fruits. Some chemicals are also
mixed with water used in hydro-cooling to prevent the shade and diseases.
iii) Vacuum Cooling:
• It is costliest method of pre-cooling. It is rarely used in case of fruits. It is done by
reducing the atmospheric pressure. It reduces the pressure of water vapour in chamber
which result in evaporation of water from fruits which bring down the temperatures.
• Pre-cooling treatment prior to low temperature storage can delay the development of
chilling injury in grapes.
Pre-cooling of Vegetables: Pre- cooling can be done by Following
Processes-
i) Placing the vegetables in a refrigerated truck with forced humidified air
circulation.
ii) Placing ice in package.
iii) Placing ice in water and passing the vegetables through a spray of cold water.
iv) Vacuum cooling is also done.
v) Hydro-cooling is done by flooding spraying or immersing is a rapid and
effective method of pre-cooling.

4.2.3 COOLING CHAMBER:
In cooling chamber low temperature is maintained for storage of product that is about 36
degree Fahrenheit for potato storage. In this chamber, there are about 45 rakes.

CHAPTER 5
CONCLUSION
Alim industry is working to meet the demand of agricultural machinery throughout the
country, for a long time. To introduce more sophisticated machinery they need to welcome
new method of production process.
The cold storage we have visited was established long years ago. So the facilities of this cold
storage are very poor, modern facilities are not used in this cold storage. Besides ammonia is
used as refrigerant so there is very bad smelling in plant room. Though it has so many
limitations but this cold storage is used for storing fruits, potatoes, eggs for whole Sylhet
City.
