23. Delineation
• Delineation is a technique used to find the
area of contamination
This helps technicians
understand how far
horizontally and
vertically the
contamination goes

24. How delineation is done
• A series of holes called borings are collected
to see a vertical soil profile
• One boring only tells about the soil at a
specific point
• Multiple borings are needed to determine the
area of contamination
• Each boring will be used as a sample

When a clean sample is found there is no need to continue sampling in
that direction

26. Soil Samples
• Soil samples are taken and sent to a certified
NJDEP lab for contamination analysis
• Generally 6 samples are taken in areas
surrounding the tank

27. Remediation
• Remediation is the removal of the
contaminant in the soil (excavation)
• After soil samples are analyzed it can be
determined if remediation is needed

28. 3 Types of Soil Sample Results
• <1000 ppm
• 1000 – 5100 ppm
• >5100 ppm

29. <1000 ppm Result
• Ppm – is a measure of how contaminated the
soil is, a higher ppm means a higher
concentrated contamination
• If EPH (contaminant measured) is found to be
below 1000 ppm NO remedial actions are
necessary
• EPH is a measure of many different
contaminants in oil

30. 1000-5100 ppm
• When contamination is detected above 1000
but below 5100 secondary testing is needed
to detect specific contaminants
• If specific contaminants are above the state
standard then remediation is necessary
Naphthalene and 2-
methylnaphthalene have
respective limits of 6 ppm
(mg/kg) and 8 ppm (mg/kg).

• If EPH is found to be above 5100 ppm
remediation is necessary
