2. History OF THE KOLKATA POLICE
• In 1690, East India Co. bought three villages Sutanuti, Kalikata & Gobindapur & named as Calcutta.
• In 1696, Formed the nucleus of a fortified military settlement.
• In 1720, East India Co. formally appointed an officer to be in charge of Civil & Criminal administration.
• The settlement was divided into “Thanas”, A small contingent of river police was also formed.
• In 1778, the strength of the police in Calcutta raised to 700 paiks, 31 thanadars & 34 naibs under a superintendent.
• In 1794, justices of peace were appointed to maintain the administration in Calcutta & its suburbs.
• In 1806, justices of peace were constituted as magistrates of 24 Parganas and districts within a 20-mile radius of the town.
• The middle decades of the 19th century witnessed a greater systematization and institutionalization of policing in Calcutta.
• In 1845 a committee under J.H. Patton brought key changes in the organization, modelled on the London Metropolitan Police.
• A Commissioner of Police was appointed with powers of a justice of peace to preserve law and order, detect crime and
apprehend offenders.
• Calcutta Police was re-organised as an arm of a new nation-state keen on consolidating its freedom, In 1947.

• Intelligent Surveillance System (ISS)
600 IP-Based Close Circuit Cameras are deployed at 225 Vital Locations to analyse the Traffic Violations, Traffic
Congestion, Processions, Traffic Accidents Scene, Crowd & Driving Behaviours and Seeking immediate as well as long
term remedial measures.
• Centralized Public Address System (CPAS)
To bring down traffic offences & better management of traffic by communicating with general public on important
occasions as well as conveying instructions during emergency situations. This system enables Kolkata police to deliver
voice messages in real time to any specific location whether to a group or to all locations.
• Traffic Information & Infrastructure System (TRIIS)
A customized software is used to maintain all the data ad necessary utilization including computerization of all the
traffic cases. Real time case status of any offender/vehicle can be obtained from the periodical data collected from
public Vehicle Department through NIC.
• Red Light Violation Detectors
A project for automatic detection of signal violation with the assistance of cameras, with focus on stop line & signal.
• Flying Hawk-Durdanta
Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV) to provide maximum security to the growing population of the “City of Joy”
