3. Introduction of CMM
 CMM is a device that measures the geometry of
physical objects by sensing discrete points on the
surface of the object with a probe. Various types
of probes are used in CMMs, including
mechanical, optical, laser, and white light.
Depending on the machine, the probe position
may be manually controlled by an operator or it
may be computer controlled. CMMs typically
specify a probe's position in terms of its
displacement from a reference position in a
three-dimensional

5. Machine Body
 Structure has two legs and is often called a
bridge. This moves freely along the granite
table with one leg . following a guide rail
attached to one side of the granite table. The
opposite leg simply rests on the granite table

9. Bridge type CMM
 The bridge is the most popular style of
coordinate measuring machine
 Allows probe movement along three axes, X,
Y and Z,
 Each axis has a sensor that monitors the
position of the probe on that axis
 . Bridge machines have a low cost to build
and the ability to maintain accuracy and
repeatability over the long-term

 95% of all bridge machines run on air
bearings to allow friction-free movement

11. Cantilever CMM
 Cantilever CMM was the initial design of
Ferranti in Scotland in the 1970s
 Today they are manufactured in small
numbers
 Generally used for measuring relatively small
parts
 it lends itself well to automatic loading and
unloading.

 These machines are used predominantly for
very large or heavy parts that require the high
precision of a bridge machine
 Most gantry machines are mounted directly
to the floor
 Surface plates for smaller components are
easily inserted into the gantry

 This is quite different from the three other
types
 There are 2 basic types of horizontal arm
CMMs

 Plate mounted, Here the column is mounted
on a large surface plate, usually made of
steel.
 Inexpensive
 Less accurate
 Two runway mounted, As the name implies,
this CMM runs on a dedicated beam there is
no integral plate
