2. 2
• At the start of any project, there will be a variety of
ideas and opinions about the purpose and scope of
the project, what the final product of the project will
be, and how the project will be carried out. The
objective of project start up process is to take the
ideas and intentions of a group of people who see
the need for a project in their organization and
convert them into a formal, planned, resourced and
funded project. This initial start up process in project
management is shown in Diagram 2.1.

• As can be seen from this diagram, the organization
who is interested in setting up the project develop a
business case. The business case is created to define
the problem or oppurtunity in detail and identify a
preferred solution for implementation.Once the
business case is approved by the project sponsor, the
required funding is allocated to conduct the
feasiblity studies.

phase is where a project sponsor, in tandem with
project manager, clarifies the projects objectives,

• Within the initiation phase, the business problem or
oppurtunity is identified,a solution is defined,a
project is formed, and a project team is appointed to
build and deliver the solution to the customer. The
initiation phase can mean different things to
different organizations.It’s everything that occurs
including carrying out preliminary and detailed
feasibility study before the project is approved, and
before detailed planning begins. A standard project
management tool in project initiation is “project
charter” document.
