Ronald Baan, an independent data architect, gave a presentation on digital innovations and the cloud. He discussed how building information management (BIM) uses cloud computing and semantic modeling to improve collaboration between parties involved in infrastructure projects. Baan explained that moving project data to the cloud allows for better data sharing, but organizations must first semantically define all data structures. He also emphasized that a hybrid cloud approach provides more flexibility and agility than a solely centralized or decentralized system. In the end, Baan argued that adopting cloud technologies requires organizations to embrace digital transformation and have an "all digital" mindset.

3. Data architect
Ronald is a data architect, who “provides a standard common
business vocabulary, expresses strategic data requirements,
outlines high level integrated designs to meet these requirements,
and aligns with enterprise strategy and related business
architecture.”
Ronald has been working for The Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure
and Waterstaat, Waternet (the water company of the Amsterdam),
the Royal Library of The Netherlands as data architect.
Ronald sees clouds too!

5. Innovation and Collaboration in Infrastructure
• Stages of constructions:
1. as required – 2. as designed – 3. as built – 4. as maintained
• Many parties involved:
owner – contractors – suppliers – regulators - investors
• Many Systems:
3D CAD - Enterprise Asset Management – GIS – Finances – HR - …
• Many Processes:
people – systems – data
• Digital Twins:
digital copy of physical assets – 3D, Data, Specs, Geo, Documentation, Sensory
• 3D, 4D, 5D, 6D BIM
calculations - scenarios – planning – investments – optimisations

Going all digital
19 October 2018
6
It is not ‘a bit’ or
‘a lot’ digitally available
for the BIM processes to
work
Only all digital fulfills the
promise
That is a challenge!
7. BIM and the need for semantics and cloud
Businesses and government agencies
who plan, design, construct, operate
and maintain buildings and physical
infrastructure (such as water, roads,
electricity, bridges) are turning to BIM
to make their processes much more
efficient.
They are increasingly using semantic
modelling and cloud to speed up their
innovations.

8. Semantic Modelling
• Semantic modelling enables integrating diverse information
resources and analysing them in a way that preserves their
meaning.
• Traditional data management techniques do not meet the
demands of complex, agile data integration, especially
when Web resources are involved.
• Semantic modelling based on Linked Data can link internal
and external data sources to get deep insights without the
need to recreate these external data sources.

10. Move to the cloud?
• Collaboration between owner and
multiple contractors, suppliers,
using different systems, from several
locations.
• Lots of data.
Can it be done?
• Data are described independent of
systems and processes and data can
be accessed, including documents,
drawings, data sets, etc.
So there is a good chance!

Building world not the most ‘modern’
But that is changing,
call for action:
• Maturity
• TCO
• Agility
• Innovative
• Capacity
• Investments
• Consolidation
• Connectivity
• Redesign

12. Building world has started to move!

The big enabler is semantic
modelling
Data structures are clearly
defined
Open Standards can be used
by all
There is a lot at stake
13. BIM cloud developments
• Now
• Data transfer – own storage, on premise computing
• Soon
• Data sharing – storage as a service, on premise computing
• Later
• Application – platform and software as a service, cloud computing
Because the data can be semantically described,
it is easy to move data and computing seamlessly around
between different systems and processes

15. What cloud?
• Network
• Infrastructure as a service
• Storage
• Storage as a service
• File sharing, data warehouse, data lake, backup, archiving
• Compute
• Platform as a service
• Software as a service
• Hybrid cloud
• Inside out/ Outside in
• Multiple vendors / Multiple solutions

16. Start with an end in mind 16

18. Is cloud cheaper?
• Most organizations expect cloud to be cheaper
• How do you make sure you get cost benefits?
18
Berlin, 19 October 2018Data Innovations and Cloud – Ronald Baan – dataforachange.com
19. Centralise or Decentralise?
• Is cloud going to enable centralisation and decentralisation?
• Do we need/want decentralisation?
19
Berlin, 19 October 2018Data Innovations and Cloud – Ronald Baan – dataforachange.com
20. Edge computing
• Build a decentralized and distributed architecture by placing more
analytics at the edge, rather than only in a central platform.
• Less data back and forth
• Less stress on the infrastructure
• No single point of failure
• Hyper personalised experiences and Internet of Things (IoT)
• Centralised clouds – Edge clouds – Edge nodes
• a.k.a. fog computing
20
Berlin, 19 October 2018Data Innovations and Cloud – Ronald Baan – dataforachange.com
21. Hybrid cloud
• Risk mitigation
• Reducing lock-in
• Redundancy (business continuity/disaster recovery)
• Portability
• Agility
• Opportunistic use-case placement
• Cloud provider innovation
• Different teams selecting different cloud providers
• Mergers and acquisitions
21
Berlin, 19 October 2018Data Innovations and Cloud – Ronald Baan – dataforachange.com
22. 22Hybrid IT
• Hybrid IT has become the standard, as
organisations deploy more and more
cloud services, while also maintaining
traditional on-premises environments.
• Success will require managing
integrations and operation’s tasks (such
as provisioning and monitoring)
• Worth the extra effort:
• Increased agility
• Best solution for applications
• Less vendor lock-in
• Embrace Hybrid IT, it is already here
and Hybrid IT is fundamentally good IT
practice

23. What do you need when moving to the cloud?
People
• Talent: 10%
• Culture: 47%
• Resources: 27%
• Rest: 16%
23
Berlin, 19 October 2018Data Innovations and Cloud – Ronald Baan – dataforachange.com
24. Essentials for the perfect cloud experience
• All digital
• at least what is within scope
• Semantic model
• save yourself
• Exit strategy
• because even good things come to an end
and there is always something better around
the corner
• Think Hybrid
• more effort, but more agility, better
solutions and less risk
