5. Theme of the Theory
Hudson presented an essential theory of
rural settlement. This theory is known as
Evolution Theory. Hudson Presented this
theory by analysing the history of
settlement of that area of 90 years
(1870-1960). The Theme of the theory is
basically
“The change of settlement
distribution with reference to time.”

7. Colonisation
Colonisation refers to establish on settlement in a new
place.
In this stage population density is very low.
A few settlements are distributed in a scattered way.
Natural or social facilities influence for growing up
settlement.

9. Spread
01 New settlements will grow up and spread off in open space.
02 The settlements will increase horizontally.
03
The population size will increase and impact upon the natural
resources.
04 Population will increase.

11. Competition
The
Third
Stage
More spread and create
large settlement.
Economic dominance is
major.
More exploitation of natural
resources.
The small and large
settlements come under
competition.
13. Criticism of the Theory
The theory carry some scope to be
criticized.
In this theory the time space is rare.
According to B. P, Birch, this model is
unrealistic.
According to D. Grossman, the change in
density due to competition is disappointing.
Duration of time for taking data is 90 years,
which is so longer period. In many instances it
is not possible.
