2. Let’s start of with Adaptations.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have a lion in the arctic? Or a
Gorilla in a desert? Do you think they would survive for a long time?
3. The answer is No.
These animals cannot survive in these habitats because they are adapted to live
in other environments. The lion lives in a hot savannah, it has a light coat of fur to
keep warm in the night, but to help cool of in the day. The gorilla has layers of hair
to keep warm and dry in the rainforest. What animal lives in the desert? What
animal lives in the arctic?
4. Look at these animals.
What type of animal do you
think they are?
5. Do you think these animals
are the same species as
the animals on the previous
slide?
6. The answer is Yes.
Those two animals are an Arctic Fox, and a Snowshoe Hare. Did
you notice that both of their colors are different. For each species,
the animals on the first slide are Brown. The animals on the
second slide are White.
Why do you think that these animals changed color?
Hint 1 (Look at where they live).
Hint 2 (The pictures have been taken at different times of a year).
7. Look at these two pictures. Can you spot the animal in each
picture? If so what animal?
8. The first animal is a Deer, the second is a giraffe.
This adaptation is called Camouflage. It is when an animal
blends in with its surroundings for defense or attack. For
example, the deer uses camouflage to stay hidden from Lions
or Leopards. A tiger uses stripes for camouflage. It remains
hidden to get close to prey to catch it and then eat it.
9. Look at these two snakes.
Are they they same
animal?
Look at this animal. What
animal does it look like?
Sea Snakes? Moray Eels?
Or something else? If
something else, then what
animal?
10. The animals are acting like Other Animals
The two snakes in the first picture are different species. The
first snake is a venomous snake that can kill a person, a
Coral snake. The second snake is a snake that is harmless to
humans. The second snake is a king snake, and it wants to
act like the coral snake so predators will be scared, and won’t
eat it. This is called mimicry, the act when someone or
something acts like something else. The second picture is an
octopus acting like two sea snakes. To warn off predators.
11. Look at the Grizzly
bear on the right. How
long do you think it
sleeps for?
A. 1 - 3 months
B. 3 - 4 months
C.5 - 7 months
D.7 - 9 months
12. C. 5 - 7 months
The Grizzly bear sleeps in a cave for 5 - 7 months nonstop,
without food or water. This adaptation is called Hibernation,
where an animal slows down its heart beat rate, body
temperature, and it happens during winter, when there is no
food, and it is cold. The bear will stock up on food, like
berries, fish, and insects during Spring and Summer, and will
hibernate during Autumn and Winter.
13. Did you know you can identify what
these birds eat by looking at their
beaks ?
14. ← This bird is an Eagle, it eats meat. You can see that the tip of
the beak is sharp, to pierce flesh.
This bird is a Hummingbird, it drinks the sweet nectar found in
flowers. It’s beak is long and thin, so that it goes right through
the middle of the flower and slurps up the nectar.
← This bird is a woodpecker, the beak is so strong and thick,
that it drills through wood. It eats the insects inside the wood.
16. All of the gray circles are close
to the center of the world. The
blue circles are towards the
poles of the world. The whales
travel to the poles in the
Summer, to escape heat, and
travel to the Equator (the center
of the Earth) during Winter to
stay warm. The traveling from
place to place due to seasons
is called Migration. Other
animals that migrate are
Butterflies, Birds, and Deer.
