1. Norm Setting Problems Solutions
Instructions: Suggest solutions to the following classroom management problems:
1. A student is excluded from participating in
group work.
He may be named the spokesperson of
that group at the next task.
2. When making groups students are vocal
towards those that they would like to be in a
group with and those that they do not want to be
with. They then choose not to work with anyone
else besides their friends.
The members of the group should be
chosen randomly and they should be
informed about these rules beforehand.
3. During group and class discussions there are
students who do not participate and instead
distract other students from learning by talking to
their friends or else talking out.
Those students who distract others shold
be given important tasks such as that of
the leader/spokesperson so that he
would feel the teacher trusts him and
thus he will do his best not to deceive the
teacher
4. The same students are always the ones who
make sure the materials are picked up and put
away at the end of class.
Every student should be given a certain
task without discrimination.
5. The class is broken into small groups for
group work and is unproductive.
The small groups should be given a task
divided into many small ones and at the
end of the class all the groups will have
to solve put together all the solutions
found and then to solve the initial larger
task
6. After a teacher’s attempt to get the class’s
attention, the students are aware what the
teacher wants (for them to be quiet) but they all
just keep talking anyways
The teacher should draw their attention
by using an interesting topic and at the
end of the class he should grade the
most quiet ones.

Classroom Organization Problems Solutions
1. Students are working in class and accomplish
tasks at different rates – some students are done
very quickly and some take much more time.
Have the those who work quickly to help
the slower ones
2. When class is working collaboratively in small
groups in the classroom, how do you regain their
attention and refocus them when it is time to
come back together?
Before coming back together the groups
can be focused on other’s activity by
asking them to inter evaluate themselves
3. The physical limitations of the environment,
which may impede an ideal seating arrangement
or group work arrangement.
The classroom may be changed with a
suitable one or the desks can be moved
so that the activity can be done in groups
4. A lesson bombs or some other mistake, which
makes it hard to stay with the plan. What do you
do with the class at that time – how do you
recover?
I will try to recover by teaching only the
easiest and the most relevant parts of
the lesson
5. Students are not interested – how to get the
class’s attention.
Use interactive materials or tell them a
joke related to the topic of the lesson
6. During transition times the students get out of
their seats, talk with their friends, and generally
make the transition times twice as long as they
Give them a time limit for these transition
times and punish them when they don’t
respect it
