The document outlines plans for a music video for the song "Mama Said" by Lukas Graham. Key ideas include using slow motion lip syncing during verses, quick cut montages to match the upbeat tempo, and cutting shots to the beat to engage the audience. Tracking shots of the singer walking and lip syncing toward the camera are proposed. Two days of filming are planned at multiple outdoor locations within 5 miles. A Canon 5D camera, shoulder mount, and lens will be rented, and actors will be provided with food and travel expenses. Total estimated production costs are £483.50.
3. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Chosen song: Mama Said – Lukas Graham.
Idea 1: Show the happy side of people’s lives. Show them
dancing/having a good time. Similar to Happy – Pharrell Williams.
This would be good because the song has a happy melody. This
would feature a fast cut montage of different people. This may
require a large cast. This would give the song a happy feel to it.
Idea 2: The song’s lyrics feature a lot of reminisce. Black and white
footage with a VCR style HUD could make it look like they are old
videos. This would be effective because it would make people.
Think about their pasts and get them engaged with the music
video. The audience will get a sense that the song is deep and
meaningful.
Idea 3: My personal favourite idea is showing some orange colour
graded footage of the singer and their friends. Whilst showing the
singer lip sync. The lip sync footage will be slowed down but the lip
sync will still match. This gives a jolly and happy feel to it whilst
still retaining a deep message. This combines the interpretations of
the two first ideas. This is good because it gets people talking
about the messages. This is very effective.
4. RESEARCH
(HEDEGAARD – HAPPY HOME.)
The footage is
Teal color
graded. This
makes the
footage look
darker and
colder.
Lukas Graham walking
alone through the streets.
Representing isolation
which fits into the songs
message: Being along
because his farther died.
The
street is
completel
y empty.
Besides
for the
car. This
is
because
all that
Lukas
had left
of his
dad was
his car.
There is fog in the
background. This
makes the background
feel more mysterious
and isolating.
5. RESEARCH
(LUKAS GRAHAM – YOU’RE NOT
THERE)
A common
theme during
this music video
is isolation. This
is why he
spends most of
the music video
alone crying.
The video is color graded green. This
makes a lonely and overgrown feel to
the video. Loneliness is a very
significant part of the song’s lyrics and
The location is a woods in the
middle of nowhere. This again
represents isolation. This is a good
theme to use in lyrics and video
because it sends a powerful
message to the viewers
6. RESEARCH
(COLDPLAY – YELLOW)
This music video
is filmed in one
shot. The entire
video is in slow
motion yet the lip
sync is perfect.
This is done by
having the artist
sing the song 50%
faster. This is
then slowed down
and the original
track is played
over it. This
ensures that the
slowed down
video matches the
original track.
7. SONGS
I have a few potential songs in mind. The first song is
Mama Said – Lukas Graham. I chose this because there
are a lot of techniques and ideas that would fit well. For
example slow motion lip syncing would work very well
during the verses. This song is upbeat and flows well.
This means that a quick cut montage would work very
well and be very effective. There is also some significant
music queues that techniques such as cutting to the beat
would make the music video more effective when
engaging the audience. It also means that I can show the
musicians playing, this would open a lot more doors and
mean there is more things I can show on camera.
8. SONGS
The second song I have in mind is Colors – Halsey. This
song would be good because it has a slow and repetitive
beat during the first verse. This would be good to use
when cutting to the beat. An idea I had for this song was
a completely dark studio with LED colored lights hung
around the room. There is a significant beat on the
words Blue and Grey. The color of the lights would
change on the beat so the word and color change match.
This would be quite effective as it fits with the same
theme of the song whilst also looking visually amazing.
This song also has a deep meaning that I can portray
through the use of visuals.
9. SONGS
The third song I had in mind is 7 years – Lukas Graham.
This song starts with a steady pace. This means that
techniques such as slow motion lip syncing can be easily
applied. A problem with this song is that it would not fit
normal paced footage. Everything will have to be shot or
slowed down into slow motion. This would look good
however it would make filming harder and most of the
footage wouldn't’t get used as slowed down footage
would take up more screen time. This story is labeled as
a “trip down memory lane” so adding something as little
as a black and white composition can make the visual
storytelling so much more effective.
10. TECHNIQUES
One of the techniques I really want to include slow
motion lip syncing in my music video. This is because it
is very visually appealing and it prevents it from
becoming boring.
I also believe that cutting to the beat will be very
effective. This is because it gets the audience to pay
attention to the music video as it is in time with the
audio track.
I think that because the majority of the songs I want to
do are upbeat so the footage has to be “happy”. I think
using some orange color grading would make the
footage look lighter and more atheistic.
11. SUMMARY
One of my ideas would have needed a LED lit room. This
would have allowed for some unique lighting and
cinematography. This would have also allowed for some
interesting transitions between scenes. For instance one
of the main words in the chorus is “Blue”. Changing the
LEDs to blue on that note would have made an interesting
scene.
Another of my ideas was to have multiple tracking shots
of the singer walking towards the camera. This was a
good idea because it feels like the viewer is more
immersed and interested in the music video. This would
have been good because it adds a nice visual element to
the video. This with an orange color grade would make
the video look visually appealing.
12. SUMMARY
The ideas for the song “Colors” with the LED lit room
would be very time consuming and very expensive. We
would need four LED strips in total. Each LED strip costs
£63. This would be £253 in total. Although this being a
good idea, the final result may not be perfect. I would
have liked to have gone with this idea but if the video
had not turned out how I wanted then it would have been
too expensive and a large waste of time.
Although the tracking shot idea is good, I do not feel that
it would be very effective. This means that I feel like it
would be boring and it would not vary in style or visual
techniques. It would look visually appealing but it would
not make the video more interesting.
13. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Lukas Graham – Mama Said
Lukas Forchammer is an artist from Copenhagen. He
lived in Christiania which is an army base that was
squatted in 1971. There was not a lot of strict laws
where he lived. He had a rough upbringing and his father
died when he was 15. So most of his songs are written
around the emotional trauma that he went through.
He is similar to artists like Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars.
All of their songs come from personal places and are
very well written.
14. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
The most important part in the song is the chorus. The
emphasis on the boy’s Mom and Dad and the words and
encouragement and validation they gave the boy, despite
what the world might say. This is fantastic. That’s why
during concerts you hear the kids in the audience
repeating these words of love and comfort. The basic
phrase of “It’s o.k. It’s quite alright” and “we were good
kids” seem simplistic; but that’s all any child needs to
hear in order to feel pride in himself and love from his
parents.
15. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
I have decided to chose the song is Mama Said – Lukas
Graham. I chose this because there are a lot of
techniques and ideas that would fit well. For example
slow motion lip syncing would work very well during the
verses. This song is upbeat and flows well. This means
that a quick cut montage would work very well and be
very effective. There is also some significant music
queues that techniques such as cutting to the beat would
make the music video more effective when engaging the
audience. It also means that I can show the musicians
playing, this would open a lot more doors and mean
there is more things I can show on camera.
17. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTI
ON OUTLINE
My chosen track is Mama said – Lukas Graham. My intended
outcome is to create a light and upbeat music video that fits with
the music and looks very professional. I chose this because there
are a lot of techniques and ideas that would fit well. For example
slow motion lip syncing would work very well during the verses.
This song is upbeat and flows well. This means that a quick cut
montage would work very well and be very effective. There is also
some significant music queues that techniques such as cutting to
the beat would make the music video more effective when engaging
the audience. It also means that I can show the musicians playing,
this would open a lot more doors and mean there is more things I
can show on camera.
I want to include some tracking shots of the singer lip syncing
whilst walking towards the camera. This is an iconic feature in
music videos. This also would fit well with the lyrics.
I want to color grade the footage. This means adding a colored tint
onto film footage. Each color can have a different effect. For
example: Adding a blue color can make the footage look colder,
orange can make the footage look warmer and welcoming. I intend
to add an orange color grade to make the footage look warmer and
18. LOCATIONS
I intend to film in multiple locations. All of the locations
are within a five mile radius. The first location is a town,
the council of the town have been notoriously letting
people use the town for filming purposes as long as the
town is credited. The town has some amazing atheistic
locations which fit in with the visual effect that I am
trying to create.
19. LOCATIONS
This is the same for the second location, my home
village. This is a good location because it has a lot of
atheistic appeal to it and would look great on camera if it
was color graded. This location is good because they will
not cost anything to use.
20. LOCATIONS
The third location is a forest, the forest is only one mile
away. This is good because it means that I do not need
to worry about transport costs. This will be good for
some tracking shots and for the opening and closing of
the song.
21. EQUIPMENT
The camera I will be using is a Canon 5D. To rent this
camera it costs £88.00 per day. There will be two days of
filming. So total cost for camera rental is £176.00.
22. EQUIPMENT
Because of the type of shots I want to include such as:
tracking shots. I need to rent either a dolly or a shoulder
mount. A shoulder mount would be a cheaper option. A
shoulder mount costs £25 to rent per day. So it would
cost £50 for the two days of filming.
23. EQUIPMENT
I want to hire a cinematic camera lens. This costs £12
per day to rent. This means that it will cost £24 in total.
24. FACILITIES
I will use the college facilities to edit my music video. I
will use the iMac computers that the college provides for
the students. They come with pre-installed programs
that allow students to edit with ease. These are programs
such as Premiere and FinalCut Pro.
The second facility that I would be using is the studio,
this is a free space to use in college and is perfect for lip
syncing shots. There is lights in the studio and an infinity
curve. This makes for great shots. This is good for extra
lip syncing shots and will be used to create more variety.
25. PERSONNEL
The crew will just be me. I am operating the camera and
editing the video by myself. No other crew members are
required.
The cast will consist of three people. The main singer,
who will be lip syncing to the track. There will be a
younger person lip syncing the child’s part of the song.
There will also be a third person as a backup, they fit
either role so if one of the two actors cannot show up
then I do not have to cancel and reschedule.
All of the cast members have offered to act for free. I am
still covering the cost of travel and food. We will be
filming for more than two hours on each day. This means
that it is a wise idea to bring food and drinks so the
actors stay hydrated and aren’t hungry.
I am limiting the cost of personnel to £50. This is so that I
can give my cast members money for fuel and food for
26. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
The lead actor in the music video is only going to be
wearing normal clothes. The budget for clothes is £80. I
will set aside money for another set of the clothes. This
is incase they are damaged, then there are spares for the
second day of filming.
Black bomber jacket
£35
Baseball T-shirt £12
Black Jeans £25
27. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
The only prop I need for the music video is a piano, this is
because the main instrument is a piano. I can ask
permission to use a music room to film someone on the
piano. This would add more depth to the music video and
make the audience feel like they are actually watching a
artist’s music video rather than unlinked footage over the
track. If I cannot use a college music room then I can rent
a piano. This piano below, is just a simple one. It costs
£37.50 to rent for a month. Unfortunately, you cannot
only rent the two days that we would be filming. This is
also good because it means that we can perfect the
scenes in which we need a piano.
28. CODES OF PRACTICE
AND REGULATION
I will contact Mechanical Copyright Protection Society-
Performing Rights Society Alliance, so that I can use the
song: Mama Said – Lukas Graham.
All of the actors performing are acting students at York
College. They are doing this for free, provided that travel
and food is paid for, so that they can put footage on
their show real. This can help their futures as well as this
task. Only one of the actors is under the age of 18. To
ensure everything is okay I will give them and their
parents release and permission forms. This is to make
sure the actors are okay with the footage being released.
All of the property we are filming on has given
permission to use their land as long as the council is
credited. The woods where we will be filming is private.
The landlord has allowed us to use the woods without
any conditions.
29. FINANCE/PRODUCTION
COSTS
The overall cost of camera and equipment is £246. This
covers the cost of a Canon 5D, a shoulder mount and a
cinematic lens. This is everything I would need to create
the music video’s visuals.
The cast has offered to do the music video for free, they
need footage to put on their acting reels. They also need
film credits to put on their CVs.
I need to hire a piano, if I cannot find one that I am
allowed to use for free, the piano costs £37.50 to rent.
This is the only prop I will need for the music video.
I want to keep 20% of the budget (£200) as a backup. This
is incase anything goes wrong or equipment is broken or
costumes need replacing.
Total production costs, including the £200 contingency,
is £483.50.

31. BUDGET EXPLANATION
AND JUSTIFICATION
I have used the majority of the budget for the filming
apparatus. I have rented a camera. A cannon 5D to film
the video with. I have rented a cinematic lens to
ultimately boost the production value and make the
video look more visually appealing. I also rented a
shoulder mount. This is so that I can create steady shots
and tracking shots.
I also rented a piano. This is for the video. This will be
featured a lot in the video so it will be money well spent.
Everything that I have spent the budget on is for a good
reason and it is all going to be featured in the video.
I did not spend the full amount of the budget because
once I had everything I needed I did not feel the need to
spend the entire budget when it is unnecessary.
33. PRE-PRODUCTION:
VISUAL PLANNING
I want to color grade my work. This will add a warmer feel
to the video if I add an orange color grade to the footage.
I also want to have a lot of tracking shots of the actor
walking, gesturing and singing. I am going to have a slow
motion lip syncing. This is good because it adds a visual
effect. How this is achieved is by having the actor/singer
sing the song at 150% speed. Then, in premiere, change
the video speed to 50%. Then the footage will be slower
but the lip syncing will still be exactly right.
34. PRE-PRODUCTION
I want to color grade my footage. This is so it looks better
aesthetically as well as making the video have a warmer and more
upbeat feel.
35. RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
36. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
INTRO: Before the lyrics start, there us a 24 second
instrumental with backing vocals. During this 24 seconds I
want to have an opening of either a swing or playground.
With the song’s name and credits on screen. The song is
about childhood, with children singing so a children’s play
ground or swings is fitting. The second half of the intro has
a piano instrumental. I want to have someone playing the
piano in time with the song.
When mama said that is was okay
Mama said that is was quite alright
Our kind of people had a bed for the night
And it was okay
Mama told us that we were good kids
And daddy told us never listen to the ones
Pointing nasty fingers and making fun
'Cause we were good kids
37. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWNVERSE ONE: I want to have a tracking shot of the singer lip
syncing. The singer will be walking towards the camera as
the camera moves backwards. At the end of every bar I am
going to cut. Every so often I will cut back to the tracking
shot. I want to have the singer sing the entire song so that I
can cut to it whenever I want in the song. During some parts
of the verse the piano instrumental is very prominent.
During these scenes I want to have various shots of
someone playing piano.
Remember asking both my mom and dad
Why we never travelled to exotic lands
We only ever really visit' friends
Nothing to tell when the summer ends
We never really went buying clothes
Folks were passing the stuff in plenty loads
New shoes once a year and then
Out to play ball so we could ruin them
38. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWNCHORUS: For the chorus I want to have lots of shots of the
singer lip syncing the lyrics. I want to also have some upbeat
footage of the singer with his friends. When the piano
instrumental is the only music then I want to have some
more footage of the piano. All of the chorus’ will have the
same visual feel to it.
When mama said that is was okay
Mama said that it was quite alright
Our kind of people had a bed for the night
And it was okay
Mama told us we were good kids
And daddy told us never listen to the ones
Pointing nasty fingers and making fun
'Cause we were good kids
39. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
VERSE TWO: This verse revolves around family, friends
and parents. I want to have the singer with their parents
or guardian like figures. I want to have occasional cuts to
the tracking shot of the singer lip syncing.
Don't get me wrong I didn't have it bad
I got enough loving from my mom and dad
But I don't think they really understood
When I said that I wanted to deal in Hollywood
I told I might be singing on TV
The other kids were calling me a wannabe
The older kids they started bugging me
But now they're all standing right in front of me (ha ha)
40. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWNVERSE THREE: This verse is a slower verse. There is less instrumental. In
this verse I want it to be heavily focused around the singer. I want to
have him sat down. This is like a hear to heart moment between the
audience and the singer. Towards the end of the verse it begins to pick
up.
I know which place I'm from
I know my home
When I'm in doubt and struggling
That's where I'll go
And old friend can give advice
When new friends only know the half story
That's why I always keep them tight
And why I'm okay
I said I'm okay
You know what my mama said?
You know what she told me?
41. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN
CHORUS: This chorus is different to the others because the
singer now has more passion. I want to have mid and close
up shots of the singer passionately singing. Along with
some shots similar to ones from the other choruses.
Mama said that is was okay
Mama said that it was quite alright
Our kind of people had a bed for the night
And it was okay
Mama told us that we were good kids
And daddy told us never listen to the ones
Pointing nasty fingers and making fun
Because we were good kids.
42. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWNOUTRO: The outro will just be repetitive shots of the the
actor lip syncing with backup singers vocalizing. The music
video slowly draws to a fade and fades to black.
