- 1. Let’s Take Back our Playground! The issue of bullying has plagued many school systems across the world. We have all read about issues of bullying causing students to take drastic measures to make the pain stop. Unfortunately, many of these drastic measures have resulted in suicide and/or murder. Bullying in schools was a major topic of discussion in Cabinet last Thursday, by Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh. At a media conference at the Education Ministry yesterday, Dr. Gopeesingh highlighted some point for identifying a bully and how to stop the act. Identifying a bully: A bully is a person who purposely tries to hurt others by: Making them feel uncomfortable. Hurting them by kicking, hitting, pushing, tripping, etc. Name-calling. Spreading nasty rumors. THE BULLY HURTS THE OTHER PERSON OVER AND OVER. The person being bullied feels that he or she can do nothing to stop it. He or she might feel smaller or weaker than the bully. He or she might feel outnumbered by the bully and the bully's friends. He or she might feel there is no help: No one to talk to. No one is standing up for him or her. He or she often feels very sad, but does not know how to change the situation. THE DAILY NEWSwww.dailynews.com THE STUDENTS’ FAVOURITE NEWSPAPER - Since 2002 Why do bullies do what they do? Sometimes they think that they will win or get what they want, they want to impress or entertain their friends, or sometimes they enjoy feeling power over someone because sometimes they are being bullied by someone else! They don’t even realize that they are hurting the other person. What to do if someone is bullying you: Tell someone you trust about it. If it is easier for you, write that person a note instead!! (People you might want to tell are: parents, teachers, the principal, playground safeties, or older friends). NEVER KEEP BEING BULLIED A SECRET!! - 2. WAYS OF INTEGRATION For the Newspaper Topic Let’s Take Back our Playground! I would use the newspaper (text media) to highlight current personal issues that most students are afraid to disclose, such as, bullying; students should feel comfortable and be able to individually identify if they are being bullied or if they are a bully, just by means of reading the newspaper. The Newspaper topic could also be used to teach the subjects Character Education, Social Studies and Health and Family Life. I could even use this resource as an introductory tool.
- 3. DECODING ACTIVITY For the Newspaper Topic Let’s Take Back our Playground! students will be placed in groups to discuss what they read, what was the story/topic all about.
- 4. ENCODING ACTIVITY For each of the Newspaper Topic, students are to create either an essay, poem or comic strip. So for example, on the topic bullying students are to highlight what is bullying, how it affect students and ways to stop bullying through any one of their chosen means of delivery.
- 5. Give yourself enough time to study Don't leave it until the last minute. While some students do seem to thrive on last-minute 'cramming', it's widely accepted that for most of us, this is not the best way to approach an exam. Set out a timetable for your study. Write down how many exams you have and the days on which you have to sit them. Then organize your study accordingly. You may want to give some exams more study time than others, so find a balance that you feel comfortable with. You may have questions that they have the answers to and vice versa. As long as you make sure you stay focused on the topic for an agreed amount of time, this can be one of the most effective ways to challenge yourself. Is your chair comfortable? Are your computer games out of sight? Try and get rid of all distractions, and make sure you feel as comfortable and able to focus as possible. Keep a clean and healthy environment! Get a good night rest Your body still need at least eight hours of sleep. Have a healthy diet Snack on healthy snacks such as fruits and vegetables and remember to drink lots of water! STUDY TIPS FOR EXAMS
- 6. WAYS OF INTEGRATION For the Newspaper Topic Study Tips! I would use the newspaper (text media) to emphasize proper study tips for students to use, and use it as a form of encouragement to get students interested in studying and creating a study timetable. I believe that this will also help with providing a means of support for students and encourage them to be consistent and hard-working at all times. The curriculum is loaded with lessons to be taught and therefore I think it is important to help students achieve a level of balance and this information can be shared in a fun and interactive manner by means of reading the newspaper. - 7. DECODING ACTIVITY For the Newspaper Topic; Study Tips students will be placed in groups to discuss some of their personal study tips and also those that were listed in the Newspaper.
- 8. ENCODING ACTIVITY After reading the newspaper article on study tips students are required to create their own study tips and study schedule/timetable.
