Field Trip may be defined as, a well planned, guided,
and purposeful outing or visit, usually by a group of
learners, to a place wherein, the objects, events,
phenomena or processes are directly
experienced/observed by the visitors leading to a
meaningful increase in their knowledge and
understanding about the objects, events, phenomena or
processes being observed usually in their natural setting.
Biology students on a field trip to Waiake Beach in Torbay, New Zealand
1. Field Trips increase the horizons of student learning
through the active hands-on experience about the real
physical world.
2. Field Trips add realism to the topic of study, thus,
increasingly leading to a better quality of experience than
what is being acquired in traditional classroom
environments.
3. Field Trips create real opportunities for students to
meaningfully connect, what is being learned in classroom
environments, with real life situations.
4. Field Trips reinforces learning in social situations thus, providing
platform for cooperative learning and minimizes the possibility of
unhealthy competition among the learners.
5. Field Trips can provide unique experiences/memories to their
participants.
1. It is costly.
2. It involves logistics.
3. Takes valuable instruction time.
4. Contains an element of uncertainty.
5. Requires meticulous planning and organization.
6. Usually suffers from lack of support from school
administration, for example.
7. Medical risk
8. Usually requires parental support/consent.
