Be able to communicate
about media production
in discussions
Task 1: Name: RehanaWhiteley
Verbal Communication
 Verbal communication is speaking through mouth, sound
and words
Non Verbal Communication
 Non verbal is communicating through sign language, body
language and gestures without actually saying anything. For
example waving at someone is saying hello or goodbye,
Nodding is classed as saying yes etc.
Newspaper challenge
william, ben, Rehana, Raychel and raymond
What we did:
 We had a task to build a newspaper tower without it falling
with just sellotype and newspaper.
We only had 5-10 minutes to talk at first to discuss are ideas
within our group. After that we had to build the model
without speaking and just using non verbal communication.
Our plan was to make 4 ‘sticks’ made out of newspaper and
then we used 3 sticks as ‘legs’ and then the other newspaper
stick as the tower top we then secured it with a lot of
cellotype. We eneded up winingg 
Good Group Communication Skills
 Listening to one another so you can get their ideas down too.
 Make sure everybody is responding and giving their input.
 Your environment that you are speaking in has to be
appropriate to speak in.
 Clear speaking, pronouncing each letter of each word.
 People may not understand the way you word a speech, so
you have to watch the way you word something so
everybody understand.
Consequences of poor communication skills
 Lack of communication skills can result in giving someone
the wrong message and Leading people to be
misunderstood. Being unable to give clear communication
will effect you in so many ways either if its not being able to
give your idea’s/thoughts out effectively and then being
misunderstood and loosing out on oportunities .
Discussion Guide:
 Environment
 Make your environment suitable for the discussion, people have to
feel comfortable to speak.
 Informal speaking will make people not take the discussion
seriously
 Supporting Resources
 Having resources will make people be aware of what topics may
arise
 Knowing the topic, people will persuade other to come along and it
will expand the discussion group.
Discussion Ground Rules Resources:
 Agenda
 Make sure everybody is on track with the discussion
 Set out what you want to achieve by the end of the
discussion right at the start.
 Time
 Should be enough time to coverall the points in the
discussion.
 Maybe shorten points to time healthy sentences to fit all in.
Discussion Ground Rules:
 Listen when somebody is talking
 Make sure everybody is participating, people slack could let the speech
 Be open to any new ideas added to the speech, new ideas expand answers to more
understanding.
 Respect other peoples ideas, if it doesn’t make sense, tell them that and add your own
points to it.
 Use language everybody can understand
 Make sure you talk clear and your tone is right
 Format of your point has to be clear
 Structure should be prepared
 No food or drink
 Don’t mumble your answers, clear responses
Interacting with others: The Soler theory
 The solar theory is a theory explaining how non-verbal basic communication skills can help
communication between people and make them feel more involved& cared for when working with
another person.
S: Face squarely; by doing this it shows that a service provider is involved with their client. Egan states "
the bodily direction you adopt shows the message that you are involved with the client"
 O: Keep an open posture:
 Keeping an open posture means not crossing arms and legs as this sends a message that you are not
involved or really interested in the person talking to you. Egan believed "open posture is generally seen
as non-defensive".
 L: Lean: by leaning forward when a person is talking to you, it shows that you are involved and listening
to what the person has to say.
 E: Use good eye contact-having good eye contact with a client shows that you are listening and that you
are not distracted. It shows you are involved because you are focusing on the person you are talking to.
 R: Be relaxed: it is important to keep still and not move about when a person is talking to you.
Social Media Group Debate
 1. You must decide upon an opening statement. This
should state your opinion, position and the arguments you
will be proposing.
 E.g. Censorship is wrong because everyone has the right to
free speech.
 Openning statement: Social media is wrong because there is a lot of
porn/sex advertising, images, pages etc. For example on Facebook there is a lot
of viral porn pages that have got out of control and is unable to stop. All this
content is exposed to kids and is horrible.
Questioning Your Opponent
2. You should have at least 10 questions that can be asked of your opponent.
These should be on separate sheets of paper or on note cards for easy reference.
The questions should be specifically directed to your opponent and should be
concise and clear.
1. Why is there pages that show porn/inapropiate images, videos etc?
2. Do you think theirs any way you can improve the way facebook can aproach reports&why?
3. Do you agree that most people are under the terms and conditions on facebook?
4. Do you think that having little kids on facebook can cause issues?
5. Facebook has a big porn problem, why arent you fixing it?
6. There arent even any age restrictions on the porn pages, Do you agree that allowing kids
around age 13 to see porn is gonna do you a good repitation?
7. Some researcher estimates that 34% of 9-12 year olds have at least one social media
account which is easily exposed to inapropiate porn photos?
Answering Debate Questions
3. You should have answers prepared which will be used to respond to your
opponent’s questions. Imagine that you are from the other team and determine
what questions may be asked of your team.
Conclusion
 4. You should have a final conclusive argument/statement drawn
up which will be proposed at the end of your debate.
 When you have determined who will be responsible for each
portion of your team's debate, it is up to you to prepare yourself for
the challenge that lies ahead. Only one team will win this debate.
The winning team will: Have a solid background regarding all
material. Have plenty of evidence to back up claims. Be
creative/psyche out opponents. Outclass opponents/never give an
answer of "uh...."
