Gender
Our film supports gender stereotypes – This is shown through the use of Summer our main character
suffering from the mental health condition of schizophrenia. Often in thrillers women are seen as the
‘damsel in distress’ and are often been chased by a male character – we chose a slight twist in our film
whereby summer is actually haunted by her own thoughts.
We used a female nurse in our film – which also supports the stereotype as most nurses are female
and often doctors tend to be male.
Tom on the other hand subverts his stereotype of been the dominant male as he commits suicide –
Women are normally seen as the weaker sex, and are often the more emotional side in a relationship;
although summer has broken down and developed a severe mental illness it still hasn’t managed to
push her to the end. Unlike Tom who ends his life.
This image shows the relationship between
Summer,Tom and the nurse. The low camera
angle is to show who is more dominant – In this
it is Tom and the nurse,to show that even
though they don’t truly have any power of
summer, because they are both dead. They
actually have all control.

Age
Both summer and tom are around the age of 16 – we felt this
was an appropriate age as our certificate was a 15 and the
audience who would watch our film would be around this
age. It is something we feel they could empathise with as the
characters are of the audience we were trying to attracts age.
The couple are seen as in love, as a young 16 year old couple
many would say its ‘puppy love’ but many of us know that our
first love is always the strongest – this also supports the idea
that summer infatuation with her boyfriend has drove her to a
mental illness.Which again supports the idea that women are
venerable to there emotions.

Subverting stereotypes
Both antagonists in the film are dressed in white – subverting
the stereotype of a villain who would normally be dressed in
dark colours. In Delusion Summer (who the audience think is
the protagonist) is dressed In dark earthy colours – the
subtext of this is that in fact summer may be the antagonist as
oppose to the protagonist in the film – we have subtlety tried
to do this, to not give to much away as to the ending of the
film.

Our film also present women as been stronger than men. This is
shown through sound – Tom never speaks throughout the film –
whereas Summer is shown talking to the therapist and also
screaming in bed. Our film challenges stereotypes but also
supports them – Summer is also shown alone in bed, which
shows there is know one there to look after her, but then she
also seen having more power in terms of speech. This is apart
of Summer’s character and relates to her schizophrenia.
