2. ‘John Tucker Must Die,’ is a 2006 film, and the genre is teen
romantic comedy. It focuses on 3 girls, all from different social
groups, who are all dating the same guy, John Tucker. The
now ex-girlfriends device a plan to use the new girl in school
to get revenge on John.
3. The target audience of this film are teenagers, specifically girls, because they are more interested
in romantic comedies than boys. The trailer establishes the setting at a high school, as the first
scene of the trailer shows a high school basketball team, which informs viewers that this is a film
targeted at teenagers. We are also introduced to the titular character at the very start of the trailer,
as we are told his name, narrated by a voice over. Then we’re shown the three girls he was dating,
the cheerleading captain - who isn’t your typical white girl, so it defies convention and what you
would have in mind when you think of cheerleader, the clever girl - who is blonde, again challenging
convention, and the brunette who is a vegan activist in the film (although not shown in the trailer).
4. Songs such as, ‘Dirty Little Secret,’ by All American Rejects are playing in the background, which is
a song that fits the theme of secrecy in the film. The song ends and there is synchronous sound
when the volleyball hits the blonde character, and the narrative changes to dialogue when all three
of the girls realize that they are dating the same guy.
5. This is a turning point in the film, as there is progress in the events that take place in the film, and to
show that there has been a change, there are some fast cuts, accompanied with all the girls hitting
each other with volleyball, and getting into a catfight, again emphasizing how this is a teen film as
you wouldn’t really expect this from adults.
6. The music starts up
again as the new girl,
the other main
character in the film
makes the girls
realize that they
should not be
fighting with each
other, but instead
should be getting
back at John. There
are a few more
scenes shown, but
the cuts aren’t as
fast as the were at
the first turning point,
and these scenes we
can see the girls
getting to know each
other as they hang
out despite
belonging to different
social groups, and
plotting their
revenge.
7. In the first half of the trailer is as we can see the progression from the three different girls dating
john, to them discovering he is cheating on them, to them hatching a plan to get revenge. You can
not be sure of the second half, which consists of a lot faster cuts, as well as popular pop song by
the Pussycat Dolls, and this also contributes to this being a film targeted at teenagers, as they are
more likely to listen to the Pussycat Dolls and would know the song, which is also very fitting to film.
8. It is also a comedy, and we can tell this as we are shown some of the humorous scenes in the
trailer, which attracts teenagers as they would prefer humour as opposed to a more serious film. In
the two scenes in trailer involving John wearing a thong, at the ‘punch line’ of the joke shown in two
scenes, the music stops, and there is silence, or John talking so the humorous elements of the film
are highlighted. In the second scene involving the thing, we can see John convincing the basketball
team to all wear thongs, which conforms to the stereotype about popular people being able to get
away with more stuff.
9. The trailer ends with each of the girls saying one word, all of which put together complete the
sentence, ‘John Tucker Must Die,’ showing how angry teenagers can be, and showing the theme of
revenge in the film.
