a.identify the use of modal of obligation;
b.relate the use of modal of obligation to real
life conversations; and
c.demonstrate understanding of modal of
obligation through differentiated activities.
The students will watch a video entitled “TALKING
ABOUT OBLIGATION”
The teacher will press the pause button and will ask
some questions about each situations presented in the
song.
Students will be grouped
into 3.
A picture will be shown in
the screen and the teacher
will read a situation.
Class, this is Jose. He belongs
to the poorest family in town.
And he decided to already quit
studying because of poverty.
Supposed Jose is your
classmate, what advice(s) will
you give him?
Guide Questions:
• Do you know
someone who has
the same situation
as Jose?
• What pieces of
advice will you
give to him?
a.Do you think Jose
needs to do these
things? Why?
b.If you were in his case,
how will you deal with
the situation?
c.What common words
were used by your group
in answering the
questions?
Modal Verbs are auxiliary or helping verbs
which modify or change the meaning of the
main verbs. Ability, Possibility, Obligation, and
Prohibition are the different functions of modals.
Today we will focus on the Modal of Obligation.
MUST, SHOULD, HAVE TO, and OUGHT TO
belong to Modal of Obligation. We use these
modals to give strong advice, and warm
invitations.
MUST
Examples:
You must go to the office early tomorrow.
Everyone must not talk loudly.
SHOULD
Examples:
You should bring your gym uniform to
school tomorrow.
I should not eat too many sweets. It’s
terrible for my health.
HAVE TO
Examples:
You have to clean your room. Mom told you to
do it.
You don’t have to bring your documents if your
employer doesn’t require them.
OUGHT TO
Examples:
You ought to listen carefully to my story.
Kelly ought to go by herself to the library.
LET’S DO THIS
Group 1- Make a pie graph about the common causes of
suicide. Label each part of the graph from the lowest to
the highest. Then explain each percentage of the graph
using Must and Should type of modals.
Group 2- Compose a song using HAVE TO and OUGHT
TO. Then sing your song in the front.
Group 3- You will act as if you’re in a pageant. The
candidates will answer the questions about GENDER
EQUALITY using the modals SHOULD and MUST.
CRITERIA FOR SONG COMPOSITION
Creative Expression (30 points)
Demonstrates creativity and originality in songwriting.
Effectively uses modals to add depth and meaning to the lyrics.
Originality (30 points)
Avoids plagiarism or excessive borrowing from existing songs.
Demonstrates a unique voice and style in songwriting.
Performance (40 points)
If applicable, the performance reflects the emotions and meaning of the
song.
Vocal quality and instrumental proficiency enhance the song's impact.
CRITERIA FOR QUESTION AND ANSWER PORTION IN PAGEANT
Appropriate Use of Modals (40 points):
Does the contestant correctly use modals (e.g., SHOULD, MUST.) to
convey their point?
Are modals used in a manner that enhances the response?
Relevance (30 points):
Does the answer directly address the question asked?
Is the response on-topic and focused?
Confidence (30 points):
Does the contestant appear self-assured and confident while
speaking?
Is there poise and composure in their demeanor?
Direction: Supply the most appropriate modal to complete
each sentence. Choose your answer from the box.

Modal Verbs of Obligation Lesson Plan

  • 2. OBJECTIVES: a.identify the use of modal of obligation; b.relate the use of modal of obligation to real life conversations; and c.demonstrate understanding of modal of obligation through differentiated activities.
  • 3. The students will watch a video entitled “TALKING ABOUT OBLIGATION” The teacher will press the pause button and will ask some questions about each situations presented in the song.
  • 4. Students will be grouped into 3. A picture will be shown in the screen and the teacher will read a situation.
  • 5. Class, this is Jose. He belongs to the poorest family in town. And he decided to already quit studying because of poverty. Supposed Jose is your classmate, what advice(s) will you give him?
  • 6. Guide Questions: • Do you know someone who has the same situation as Jose? • What pieces of advice will you give to him?
  • 7. a.Do you think Jose needs to do these things? Why? b.If you were in his case, how will you deal with the situation? c.What common words were used by your group in answering the questions?
  • 8. Modal Verbs are auxiliary or helping verbs which modify or change the meaning of the main verbs. Ability, Possibility, Obligation, and Prohibition are the different functions of modals. Today we will focus on the Modal of Obligation. MUST, SHOULD, HAVE TO, and OUGHT TO belong to Modal of Obligation. We use these modals to give strong advice, and warm invitations.
  • 9. MUST Examples: You must go to the office early tomorrow. Everyone must not talk loudly. SHOULD Examples: You should bring your gym uniform to school tomorrow. I should not eat too many sweets. It’s terrible for my health.
  • 10. HAVE TO Examples: You have to clean your room. Mom told you to do it. You don’t have to bring your documents if your employer doesn’t require them. OUGHT TO Examples: You ought to listen carefully to my story. Kelly ought to go by herself to the library.
  • 11. LET’S DO THIS Group 1- Make a pie graph about the common causes of suicide. Label each part of the graph from the lowest to the highest. Then explain each percentage of the graph using Must and Should type of modals. Group 2- Compose a song using HAVE TO and OUGHT TO. Then sing your song in the front. Group 3- You will act as if you’re in a pageant. The candidates will answer the questions about GENDER EQUALITY using the modals SHOULD and MUST.
  • 12. CRITERIA FOR SONG COMPOSITION Creative Expression (30 points) Demonstrates creativity and originality in songwriting. Effectively uses modals to add depth and meaning to the lyrics. Originality (30 points) Avoids plagiarism or excessive borrowing from existing songs. Demonstrates a unique voice and style in songwriting. Performance (40 points) If applicable, the performance reflects the emotions and meaning of the song. Vocal quality and instrumental proficiency enhance the song's impact.
  • 13. CRITERIA FOR QUESTION AND ANSWER PORTION IN PAGEANT Appropriate Use of Modals (40 points): Does the contestant correctly use modals (e.g., SHOULD, MUST.) to convey their point? Are modals used in a manner that enhances the response? Relevance (30 points): Does the answer directly address the question asked? Is the response on-topic and focused? Confidence (30 points): Does the contestant appear self-assured and confident while speaking? Is there poise and composure in their demeanor?
