Chris Morgan presented on new approaches to presenting data. He discussed interactive reporting and dashboards. Clients now demand more interactive and visually appealing reports that can be accessed self-service. Both interactive reporting and dashboards have benefits and drawbacks depending on the goals. Interactive reporting allows for exploring data but may not be as polished, while dashboards look appealing but are harder to build and modify. When choosing an approach, considerations include objectives, intended users, costs, security, and balancing style with functionality.

Make it more interactive
• We live in the age of
• Client want to have answers now and then
have the ability to ask the next one
• And it has to look good..
– It always has, but now it has to look stunning

They don’t want to talk to you!!
• Clients want to do it for themselves…
• They are not prepared to
wait any more
• Or pay for something they
feel they can do on
their own

So what are some options?
Interactive
Reporting
Dashboards vs

Dashboards
• Great for headline view of the world
• Potentially easy to deploy
• Look and feel can be very precise
• Not great for “playing” with data
• Specifications are hard to define
• More difficult to build and therefore costly

Interactive Reporting
• Wonderful for “playing” with data
• Potentially easy to deploy
• Less build time = lower cost to implement
• Does require an understanding of the data
• Requires some level of training
• Not as pretty… Less “Wow” more “Do”

Things to consider
• What are you trying to achieve
– Quicker turn around of results
– More openness/accessibility to the data
• Think about implementation issues
– Web based solutions
– What is the client allowed to do/change

NewMR New Approaches to Presenting Data, June 23, 2011
Things to consider
• Who is your audience
– Senior management / Data Analysts
– How many will there be (1-5, or hundreds)
• Open platform / adding in-house data
– Will your solution grow with your needs
– Clients expect more the moment you give
them more

Branding?
• Is having your logo at the top enough?
• What about branding for your client?
• What will be “your” charging model?
• How will you differentiate yourself?
16. Speaker Chris Morgan, Data Liberation, United Kingdom
NewMR New Approaches to Presenting Data, June 23, 2011
Costs… Well of course
• Reporting is becoming/ has become
a commodity
• Clients don’t want to pay for anything
• Most reporting systems have usage costs
– Annual per user / per report / per extract

Security
• Physical server locations are important
• Can you host it yourself, do you know how
• And then there is the data
level security to think about
