Commercialised Patents
SCOPUS
• Measured mainly for some Applied
Sciences.
• Some Journals like Nature are better than
Patents in terms of IPR quality.
• Some Patents are worthless.
• Hence, not enough clarity in hierarchy of
quality . It is only that we all follow some
herd convention. So don’t worry too much
and dive into your Research .

conferences are expensive.
UGC-CARE List Group II

5. UGC List of Journals
UGC-CARE List Group I
• Journals found qualified through UGC-CARE protocols.
• Quality recognized by UGC.
• Have ISSN.
• Most of them have good quality which has the potential to become SCOPUS Journals.
These are not SCOPUS or SCI Indexed. I assume that once a Journal qualifies as SCOPUS
indexed , it jumps to UGC-CARE List Group II
Who is it ideal for :
• Ideal for early career faculty and students to start practicing if they find publishing in
conferences are expensive.
Word of caution :
• Always download the UGC list of journals from UGC care website. Beware of clones
made by predatory Journals. Refer Slide 1.
• Beware of predatory Journals who call themselves as open access and are not in this list.
• Rule of thumb : Try not to spend to publish unless you have lot of money or someone is
sponsoring you .

There are three categories by three global associations:
Web of Science Recognized Journals : Arts & Humanities Citation Index, Science Citation Index Expanded, Social
Sciences Citation Index.
It is better to register here as their website is user friendly – Just copy paste your Abstract and the applet in the website
will help you find the best journal for your content.

Scopus – Recognized Journals by Elsievier. The site specified in UGC website is this one:
https://www.scopus.com/sources.uri?zone=TopNavBar&origin=searchbasic
However, I prefer this website for quick search of SCOPUS Journals as it specifies the Quartiles –Q1,Q2,Q3,Q4 and other
metrics to assess the Journal quality.

Modern Language Association (MLA) – Recognized Journals. List accessible through registering at UGC care. It is for

7. What I learnt from Scientists
like Madam Curie:
1. Do not do Research for publishing sake.
Publication is a by-product of your
research, not vice versa.
2. If you have found something great,
publish it quickly. Putting your idea in
public domain for better humanity is
more important than waiting for long to
get published. It also establishes your
credibility that you found it first. It also
allows you to move forward with your
research than getting stuck with
waiting to publish existing research.
What I learnt from Engineers :
3. If you have something of commercial
value, Patent and then publish.
What I learnt Overall :
Decide when to use one of the above - 1,2
and 3 carefully . It is purely situational.
