1. Like in real mv used time lapse of three seconds (DIDN’T COULD MENTION WHY I DIDN’T)
An extreme close up shot was used as it is important to grab the audience’s attention from the start so that they
continue viewing the music video.
The picture frame is used throughout … to show the ageing and to compare to the older version of the artist at the
end of the music video. This is done again to make the audience look forward to something.
A long shot is used to introduce and give audience important information on time and setting. It could also show the
relationship between the artist and the location itself. Unlike other generic conventions of like HipHop where they
use bizarre, unrealistic location for example; Katy Perry’s Wide Awake ,The Artist here , casually walking on the path
represents the folk rock genre of using a natural setting. This also helps to even though Dorian Gray is a fiction the
environment helps us into not breaking the verisimilitude.
Intertextual reference was made based on the theme of Oscar Wilde’s novel Dorian Gray,
thiscould be seen as to draw a wider audience but as well as for the audience a hint on of what the music video is
about. As Dorian Gray is someone who is indifferent to others, we filmed the Artist through the gate to give a sense
of being locked awayand isolated from society.
Folk Rock’s Iconography is known for having to wear dark clothing which is why we asked the artist to wear a black
coat as well as having the collar up we tried to portray the time i.e. the Victorian look .Having shaky camera
movements and angles reinforces the Folk Rock genre of breaking the rule of thirds.
Folk Rock conventions follow Goodwin’s theory of relating the visual to the lyrics. We have used this concept so that
the audience know what genre is being portrayed. However, by limiting this by only using it in some parts of the
videoit gives off a hidden meaning of how unbalanced and deteriorated Dorian’s life is.
Zooming in and out of the portraits show importance as well again introducing the next scene
Quick cuts and quick cutaways is used to emphasize the intensity of Dorian Gray’s life. It also references to a hidden
meaning that he’s racing against time.
Like in Rock Music Videos we did a lot of close ups and extreme close up shots to emphasize the emotion and facial
expressions, this is something unexpected for the audience and done to make them focus as there is nothing else in
the frame.
Abnormality is a common conventional folk rock type. An example would beMumfor and Son’s the Cave having other
people lipsyncing to the lyrics and in some parts the band themselves lipsync it. This is uncommon in mainstream
Music Videos but has become a traditional norm in Folk Rock.
We challenged the conventions of Folk Rock by having special effects, Usually Folk Rock Bands would keep the
natural way of their Music Video
However I agree to David Buckingham’s theory that genre is a
constant process of change because as trend changes the audience’s ideology would change too.
The black and white was made to emphasize the loneliness of Dorian Grayandhim being different itwas also done to
give information to audience about era.
