 Guided by the standards .policies. ethics or
code of ethics and laws.
 Based on principles of nursing process,
problem solving and scientific methods.
 Focuses on safety, quality, constantly
reevaluation

 Identifies problems issues , risk involved
including pts, families and stake holders in
decision making process.
 Applies logic intuition creativity which is

6.  Competencies attitudes for critical thinking
 Independence of thought: should think on their
own.
 Curiosty: mind should be filled with questions like
,why are we believing ,what are the causes does should
be in this way.
 Insight into egocentricity and sociocentricity.
Critical thinker should be open to the possibility. The
personal bias social pressure custom should never
affect the thinking

7.  Fair mindedness. Should consider all the view
points, standards
 Intellectual humility. Limit of knowledge should be
known. Lack of knowledge should consult
mentor/leader.
 Intellectual courage. Ability and willing to listen and
do the evaluation fairly by considering ideas
viewpoints of others even if they don’t agree.
 Intellectual empathy. Nurse should understand the
feelings of others.

8.  Intellectual integrity -Quality of being honest and
following moral principles.should considef positive and
negative view points in general and others.
 Intellectual perseverance - Inspite of frustration nurses
should understand and look for truth.
 Intellectual sense of justice- should be impartial and
should consider others viewpoints.
 Confidence in reasoning. Should believe there is a
scientific rationale behind all the nursing activity.
 Interest in exploring thoughts and feelings. Critical
thinker should know emotions influences thinking.

9.  Guidelines to enhance critical thinking skills and
attitudes
 1.Performing self assessment
 - to determine attitude.
 2. Tolerating Dissonance and ambiguity
 Nurses should increase their tolerance when contradiction
occurs.
 3. Seeking situation where thinking is productive
 Should attend conferences and workshop to improve or
develop Questioning skill, respect others view points and
need to review the standards for evaluating thinking.
