Topic : In-service Education
 In-service education can simply be defined as
the relevant courses and activities in which a
serving teacher may participate to upgrade his
professional knowledge, skills, and competence
in the teaching profession. Therefore, it
encompasses all forms of education and training
given to a teacher who is already on the job of
teaching and learning.
 The goal of in-service professional
development is to improve the knowledge,
skills, and commitments of teachers so that
they are more effective in planning lessons,
using a variety of effective approaches in
their teaching, and monitoring students
learning as well as in undertaking other
school and community responsibilities.
 In-service programme emerges from recognized
needs of the school and community.
 All school personnel need in-service education
 Proper supervisor is an effective means of
accelerating the in-service professional
growth.
 Improving the quality of instruction is the
immediate and long range observes of in-
service education.
 In-service education leads to a continuous
process of re-examination and revision of the
educational programme. Additionally, it
encourages participants to attain self-
realization through competence,
accomplishment and security.
 In-service education has increasingly
become the concern of state agencies,
colleges, and universities, school boards,
school administrators and teachers.
 Supervisors should create an atmosphere
that will stimulate a desire on the part of
teachers for in-service growth.
 The in-service programme should provide for
keeping abreast with research and advances
in education
 An in-service programme is most effective
when cooperatively initiated and planned.
 Kothari commission observes
 the need of in-service education is the most
urgent in the teaching profession because of
the rapid advance in all the fields of
knowledge and continuing evolution of
pedagogical theory and practice.
 Education – a life long process.
 need of continuous training.
 to bring dynamism in teaching.
 to exchange views.
 to develop critical thinking.
 to develop a sense of belongingness.
 for educational reconstruction.
 improvement in competence.
 need of change.
 educational extension.
 To provide incentives to the teachers.
 To help the teacher to know their problems.
 To solve them by pooling their resources and
wisdom.
 To employ more affective method of
teaching.
 To broaden the mental outlook of the
teachers.
 To increase the professional efficiency of the
teacher.

  • 2.  In-service education can simply be defined as the relevant courses and activities in which a serving teacher may participate to upgrade his professional knowledge, skills, and competence in the teaching profession. Therefore, it encompasses all forms of education and training given to a teacher who is already on the job of teaching and learning.
  • 3.  The goal of in-service professional development is to improve the knowledge, skills, and commitments of teachers so that they are more effective in planning lessons, using a variety of effective approaches in their teaching, and monitoring students learning as well as in undertaking other school and community responsibilities.
  • 4.  In-service programme emerges from recognized needs of the school and community.  All school personnel need in-service education  Proper supervisor is an effective means of accelerating the in-service professional growth.  Improving the quality of instruction is the immediate and long range observes of in- service education.  In-service education leads to a continuous process of re-examination and revision of the educational programme. Additionally, it encourages participants to attain self- realization through competence, accomplishment and security.
  • 5.  In-service education has increasingly become the concern of state agencies, colleges, and universities, school boards, school administrators and teachers.  Supervisors should create an atmosphere that will stimulate a desire on the part of teachers for in-service growth.  The in-service programme should provide for keeping abreast with research and advances in education  An in-service programme is most effective when cooperatively initiated and planned.
  • 6.  Kothari commission observes  the need of in-service education is the most urgent in the teaching profession because of the rapid advance in all the fields of knowledge and continuing evolution of pedagogical theory and practice.
