Reproduction allows living organisms to produce offspring similar to themselves. It is a key characteristic of life. There are two main types of reproduction in animals - asexual reproduction, which involves a single parent, and sexual reproduction, which involves the fusion of male and female gametes from two parents. Asexual reproduction occurs through processes like binary fission, budding, and multiple fission. Sexual reproduction involves the production of gametes - sperm from males and eggs from females - with fertilization occurring internally or externally depending on the species.

1. REPRODUCTION IN ANIMALS
Reproduction is ability of living organisms to produce young ones similar to themselves. It is
one of the most important characteristic of life. Animals reproduce by two main types – asexual
reproduction and sexual reproduction.
In asexual reproduction single parent is involved and new individuals formed are genetically
identical.
asexual reproduction takes place by following process:
Binary fission : A parent cell divides into two daughter cell. E.g. : bacteria & amoeba.
Multiple fission : it is repeated division of parent cell into a number of small individuals . E.g.
plasmodium .
budding : the formation of new individuals from small protuberance ;the bud arising on parent
body is called budding . E.g. hydra yeast. The offspring remain attached to parent during growth
.it separates eventually to live as an independent organism.
Sexual reproduction: production of young ones by the formation and fusion of special cells
called gametes ; contributed generally by two parents ;male and female is termed as sexual
reproduction. In multi-cellular organisms gametes are produced by reproductive organs . The
male gametes called sperm and the female gametes called egg or ova. In some cases individuals
produce both type of gametes; it is called hermaphrodite animal (earthwarm) . Fusion of male
and female games is called fertilization.
Reproductive patterns –
External fertilization and external development –e.g. frogs
Internal fertilization and external development –e.g. hen
Internal fertilization and internal development _ e.g. human beings & elephant.
