2. EMOTION
A Psychological States That Comprise Thoughts And Feelings, Physiological Changes, Expressive Behaviors, And Inclinations To Act.
The English word “emotion” is derived from the French Word emouvoir. This is based on the latin emovere,
means to stir up or to excite. where e-variant of ex means out and movere means “move”.
Emotions, in fact, are the psycho-physiological reactions through which instinctive
organism energy finds expressions.
-William McDougall
Emotion is an affective experience that accompanies generalized inner adjustment
and mental and physiological stirred up states in the individual and that shows
itself in his overt behaviour.
-Crow and Crow
EMOTION REGULATION
Emotion regulation is the automatic or deliberate use of strategies to initiate, maintain,
modify or display emotions in a given situation.
3. TYPES OF EMOTION
Positive Emotions: Positive emotions that lead one to feel good about one’s self will lead to an
emotionally happy and satisfied result. Some of the positive emotions are:
Hopeful, Confident, Peaceful
Negative Emotions: Negative emotions sap your energy and undermine your effectiveness. In the negative
emotional state, you find the lack of desire to do anything. Some of the negative emotions are:
Exhausted, Panic, Obnoxious(unpleasant)
The immediate effects of
NEGATIVE EMOTIONS POSITIVE EMOTIONS
Lightheadedness Relieve tension throughout the body and within organs.
Muscle tension Relieve the subsequent side effects of depression an anxiety.
Elevated heart and breathing rates. Lower blood pressure.
Increased blood flow to the brain and away from other organs
Nausea
Frequent urination and diarrhea
4. Sport Performance
Sport performance is the manner in which sport participation is measured. Sport performance is a complex mixture of
biomechanical function, emotional factors, and training techniques. Performance in an athletic context has a popular connotation
of representing the pursuit of excellence, where an athlete measures his or her performance as a progression toward excellence
or achievement.
Sport performance has four distinct aspects:-
Neuromuscular factors,
The relationship between the nervous system and its dimensions and the musculoskeletal system.
Mental control and psychological factors;
Environmental conditions; and
Coaching and external support for the athlete.
Factors Influencing Sports Performance
1) BODY PROPORTIONS
2) SKILLS TRAINING
3) STRENGTH
4) FLEXIBILITY
5) ENDURANCE
5. EMOTIONS & SPORTS PERFORMANCE
❖ Emotions has both facilitative and debilitative effect on athletic performance.
❖ In general, when positive emotions like joy, happiness, elation etc., have facilitative effect on performance.
❖ Negative emotions such as anger, fear, anxiety, over-arousal etc., put hurdles in the way of performance.
❖ Research on the issue is full of contradiction and still inconclusive.
❖ However, several studies indicate that optimal emotions can initiate and maintain the required amount of effort for a task
(Hanin, 2000).
❖ For example, an athlete’s anxiety level is optimal before and during competition, his or her chances of performing best are
also optimal.
❖ Optimal emotions keep the athlete energized as a result of which his or her level of motivation level remains high.
❖ High arousal due either to anxiety or aggression in sports like soccer, hockey, basketball etc. may result in an increase of
anaerobic precision as emotional arousal is said to blur to vision and impinge upon concentration.
❖ Several studies indicate that high arousal coupled with some emotions impairs working memory (Parfitt et al, 1990) and
narrowing of attentional focus so that the athlete finds it difficult to perform well (Moran, 1996). It also reduces cognitive
resources available for the task or activity in hand.
❖ All athletes invariably respond emotionally to the performance situation in their own characteristic ways both during and after
the games.
❖ For instance, when a player (in badminton, tennis, basketball or volleyball) scores a point, he feels happy, and puts up a more
confident, energetic and motivated appearance.
6. IMPACT ON OUR PERFORMANCE
Positive Emotions
Even when we are not winning, maintaining a
positive attitude in the field can vastly improve
our performance.
Provide energy and help us to push through
pain.
Keep our muscles and body more relaxed.
Help our physical endurance as our energy is
not being zapped by negative emotions like
anxiety and despair.
Negative Emotions
Negative emotions such as frustration, anger and anxiety
can affect our athletic ability
Causing unwanted muscular tension, which
can affect form, speed and agility.
Draining of our physical energy needed to
perform.
Causing breathing difficulties.
Leading to loss of coordination.
