This document provides an overview of organometallic compounds and metal carbonyls. It defines organometallic compounds as complexes containing at least one metal-carbon bond. The document then classifies organometallic compounds based on the metal present (main group, transition metal, lanthanide/actinide) and the type of metal-carbon bond (ionic, covalent sigma, yllides, multi-center, pi). Specific examples are provided for each classification. Metal carbonyls are classified based on the number of metals present and their structures are described in terms of bonding and the 18-electron rule. Methods for preparing metal carbonyls are also mentioned.

2. 1. Organometallic compound:
 Edward Frankland was father of organometallic chemistry.
 Complexes which have atleast one metal-carbon bond are known as OMC. For
example, RMgX (R = alkyl, aryl group).
 NaCN and KCN have metal-carbonbondbutdispite of this,bothare notorganometallic
compound.So,the above givendefinitionof organometalliccompoundisnotrigid,itis
flexible.
2. Classification of OMC
a) On the basis of metal present in OMC
I. Main group OMC: If the metal present in organometallic compound is main group
element then it is said to be Main group organometallic compound. e.g. t-BuLi, RMgX,
Me2Hg, TEL, n-BuLi, Al (CH3)3
II. Transition metal organometallic compound: If the metal is from transition metals then
it is known as Transition metal organometallic compound. e.g. Rh (PPh3)3 Cl, Pd (PPh3)4
R2CuLi, Fe (CO)5
III. Lanthanide/Actinide organometallic compound: If metal is from f-block metals then it
is known as Lanthanide/Actinide organometallic compound e. g. (C8 H8)2 M. (M= Pa, Nd)
b) On the basis of nature of metal-carbon (M-C) bond present in OMC
Classified in following five categories:
I. Ionic OMC
II. Covalent sigma bonded OMC
III. Yllides
IV. Organometallic compound with multi centre bond
V. Organometallic compound with pi-bond.
