The growth of the electric vehicle fleet is driving the deployment of EV charging stations, which substantially impact the power demand of electricity distribution systems. This presents a real challenge that must be addressed effectively. Blacklight Analytics is developing a tool that determines the connection capacity of EV charging stations in a distribution system, as well as the optimal connection points in order to maximize the overall capacity of the grid.

2. About Blacklight Analytics
• Years of collaboration with the energy sector through our
founding members.
• Technical expertise in mathematical programming,
optimization, machine learning and, more generally, artificial
intelligence (AI).
• Significant experience in applying those cutting-edge
techniques to real-world problems.
• Software engineering is at the core of our business. We build
quality software that matches increasingly demanding industry
standards.
3. EV and Distribution Systems
• The growth of the electric vehicle (EV) fleet is driving the
deployment of EV charging stations.
• Substantial impact on the power demand of electricity
distribution systems.
• Real challenge to address effectively to lower the risk of
‣ cost increases for consumers
‣ negative feedback on transport electrification prospects.

4. Distribution Systems and Renewables
• Not the first time that distribution systems face such a
challenge.
• Distribution network planning and operational strategies are
evolving to cope with the on-going installation of wind and solar
power generation resources.
• Blacklight Analytics successfully commercialized a tool that
helps distribution system operators to determine the hosting
capacity of their infrastructure:
GCAN
Global Capacity ANnouncement
5. Global Capacity ANnouncement
• Determines the generation capacity that the distribution infrastructure
can host.
• Identifies where the generation means need to be connected in the
grid to maximize the hosting capacity.
6. Grid Connection Capacity of EV Charging Stations
• In a similar mindset, we are developing a tool that determines:
‣ connection capacity of EV charging stations in a distribution
system,
‣ the optimal connection points in order to maximize the overall
capacity of the grid.
• Connection capacity figures are critical to allow a well-designed
connection process with the grid.
• The deployment of EV charging stations is eased thanks to a
better coordination between charging station developers and
distribution system operators.
8. Dynamic Capacity
• The connection capacity computed by our tool has two
components:
‣ the permanent capacity indicates the extent of the power
demand that the grid will always be able to supply at a
connection point,
‣ the dynamic capacity is the highest power demand that the
grid will be able to supply during favorable operating
conditions at a connection point.
• During real-time operation, the actual capacity is continuously
updated and varies between the permanent and dynamic levels
as the operating conditions of the distribution system change.

10. Business Model
• Our business model for this tool relies on complementary
services:
‣ the core features of the tool are provided as-a-service
through an annual subscription fee. This grants the customer,
i.e. the distribution system operator, access to a full-featured
web application.
‣ IT and software development services are provided to help
the customer collecting and formatting required data about its
grid infrastructure, as well as to exploit computation figures
for specific needs.
