10. Theory
Targeted skills: listening for specific factual details.
You are given a form (e.g. membership registration, tour
booking, claim form, etc.) and are asked to fill in the gaps
with factual details (e.g. names, phone number), using up to
three words and/or a number from the recording.
Contracted words will not be tested.
Hyphenated words count as single words.
11. Which option(s) follow(s) the instruction?
USE NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER
A. 3 years old
B. Three years old
C. 3-year-old children
D. Three-year-old children
12. Action plan
Read the instructions carefully and check the word limit.
Look at the title of the form and the available information, and decide what the form is about.
Note the order of the questions.
Look at the gaps and any headings and decide what type of information is required (e.g. part of
speech (noun, verb), type of words (a number, an email, etc.)).
Underline/highlight the keywords around each gap and use these to help you listen for the answer.
Think of possible paraphrases/synonyms of the words as you might hear them in the recording.
As you listen, complete the form.
13. Action Plan
• Read questions
• Predict
information for
each gap
Step 1
• Listen and write
words or numbers
you hear
Step 2 • Check spellings
• Make sure your
answers do not
exceed word limit
Step 3
14. Remember
Be aware of distractions:
Correction: The speaker may give some false
information, then he/she will correct him/herself.
Listen for the correct information
Distraction: The speaker may give similar information
to the gap, but it’s about something else/
Pay attention to whom/what is being talked about

(Question 1) and look at the answer on

16. Predicting answers – Students’ Book p. 19
1. Match the questions (1-8) with possible answers (a-h)
2. Which answers need:
words only?
numbers only?
words and numbers?
3. Listen to 4 conversations and complete 4 of the answers.
18. LEAD IN ACTIVITY
Group work: Plan your trip
You are going on a trip to some distant mountains.
Work in groups of 3 or 4 and make a list of 5 things you should
know how to do when you have difficulties on the mountains.
Example: We should know how to read the map.
Then share with the class.
19. Students’ Book – p.19
Exercise 5: Look at the note on page 19. For which question(s) will
you need
a number?
word spelling?
a name of a place?
a subject of study or language?
a free-time activity?
a name of a job?
20. Listen for signals of the answers
When you listen to a recording, you will often hear a phrase
which signals the answer to a question.
Normally they are paraphrases or synonyms of the key words in
the questions or direct questions raised in a conversation.
For example:
Qualifications: Degree in…................ (he’s been to university...)
Age: .................... (how old is he?)

Editor's Notes
Ask students whether they know any stories about the people above. Tell them to discuss in groups in 10’
Materials needed: Textbook Unit 2 + Supplementary Book – Form Completion
Tell students that this type of question can be found in all sections of Listening (1-4) . But this lesson focuses on the type they might see in Section 1
Emphasize the importance of prediction before listening: Good prediction is half way to success
A, C, D are correct. Option B is the only one exceeding the number of words allowed
A, C, D are correct. Option B is the only one exceeding the number of words allowed
Strategy recap
Tell sts that distractions are likely in IELTS Listening tasks
(This model practice could be skipped if there’s a shortage of time. In such a case, go straight to the main practice in Students’ Book.)
Ask sts to predict the type of information required in each blank space.
Instruct sts to use the existing labels as hints to figure out the type of information needed. E.g. “Grade exam this weekend” for Question 1 Grade …(should be a number)…
Also, sts should listen for these key words (‘grade… this weekend’) or their paraphrases to get the answer from the recording
Play the ‘Model Practice’ audio file and pause at John’s “Yes, Grade 7”. Then, note how the theory is applied to get the correct answer here.
Play the rest of the recording and correct the sts’ answers.
Time allocated: 10’
Tell the students that they will listen to a conversation between a man and a woman who are looking for someone to travel with them to some distant mountains
- Time allocated: 10’
Ask students to match answers and signals in Exercise 6 p. 19
Then ask them to think of different ways to paraphrase the signals
Correct sts’ answers and give explanations when needed (You may refer to Teacher’s Book, p. 20)
Play the audio file again, and pause at parts that are worth paying attention (answers, paraphrases of keywords, distractors, etc.) if necessary
