15. Recording Script: Exercise 4
Examiner What do you like about the area where you live?
Hanan Oh. I really like the sea and the part of the city just by the sea because it's very beautiful
and there are always lots of people there I live in the suburbs. but I enjoy going shopping in the
city centre. There are plenty of good shops, and I like buying clothes.
E What things in Muttrah do you not like?
H Mm, I'm not very keen on the hot weather. and the hot wind from the desert is something I
don't like.
E Mm… How is the area changing?
H They're building more houses and roads. It's getting busier.
E What do you like about the area where you live. Kwan?
Kwan I find walking in the mountains very enjoyable, and another good thing is the people,
because they're very friendly and generous I think people in my village are very happy and relaxed
E What things in your village do you not like?
K Well. I live by a busy main road and I find the traffic very unpleasant I really dislike the noise of
cars and lorries.
E How is the area changing?
K There's more traffic. so the village is becoming noisier. Also, young people are leaving the village,
so it isn't so lively.
16. Practice
1. What do you like about the area where you live?
2. What things in your town or city do you not like?
3. How is the area changing?
4. What do people in your area do in their free time?
5. What do you think visitors to your town or region should see? Why?
Quickly go through this part (max time: 5’) – You can skip this if you are short on time
(Time allotted: 5 mins)
1/ With books closed, ask students to work alone and think of three or four things they can say to describe the area where they live, e.g. I live in a busy street near the city centre.
When they are ready, ask them to work in small groups and describe the area where they live to each other.
2/With books open, draw their attention to the introduction on adjective-noun collocations.
- Ask students which adjective is usually found with each noun (long journey, relaxing holiday).
- Ask if it's possible to say long holiday and relaxing journey (yes).
Tell them that collocations are words that are often found together and which make your English sound more natural, but that they are not fixed expressions.
Time allotted: 5’
-Play the audio file once.
-Give students time to prepare their answers. Help them with any vocabulary they need.
-Click to reveal the answers.
-After students have listened to the candidates, ask if they think the candidates did well (they gave longish answers, used a range of vocabulary, spoke fluently, and answered the questions exactly).
-Alternative treatment: Since the goal of this activity is to provide a model answer to a part 1 question, instead of having the students do this comprehension task you can just make students read the script as they listen. Then you can ask students what makes this a good answer (they gave longish answers, used a range of vocabulary, spoke fluently, and answered the questions exactly). After that you can highlight the features of the model answer as shown in the next slide.
Explain this expected structure for part 1 speaking and show how the model answer illustrates it. Stress on the importance of elaboration
Get students in pairs and practice in 5 – 7 minutes
Remind them to apply the strategy
Ask some students to share their answers and give feedback/ correction if any. Focus on correcting their application of the part 1 answer
Ask students to answer the questions in Activity 3/ p.13 (Students’ book) then show them the phrases
Then get the students to answer questions in Activity 4 p. 13 based on the script on the next slide
The script could be found on page 159, Students’ Book
Answers:
Hanan: 2, 4, 5, 6
Kwan: 1, 3, 7, 8
