Racism in Health-care Essay
Throughout American history, relationships between racial and ethnic groups have been marked by antagonism, inequality, and violence. In today's
complex and fast–paced society, historians, social theorists and anthropologists have been known to devote significant amounts of time examining and
interrogating not only the interior climate of the institutions that shape human behavior and personalities, but also relations between race and culture. It
is difficult to tolerate the notion; America has won its victory over racism. Even though many maintain America is a "color blind nation," racism and
racial conflict remain to be prevalent in the social fabric of American institutions. As a result, one may question if issues and challenges...show more

In doing so, he pays particularly close attention to black patients and their relations with health care policies and practices. Smedly maintains that
blacks are not only the victims of, inpatient and outpatient treatment, racial policies, and other services but also the victims of its consequences.
He argues that many health care administrators are agents to a system of inequality that support provider and administrator biases, geographical
inequalities, and racial stereotypes (Smedly 2012). In the field of health care there is a pervasive notion that many blacks are presumed to be low
income. It is interesting to see how blackness is associated with low income and class. For example, questions regarding where black patients
reside and what their current occupation is can be directly linked to racial profiling in health care. The author contends black patients are more
likely to receive a lower quality of health care due to one's insurance status and income. Here, too, one can maintain that race is deeply interwoven
into the construct of class and accessibility (Smedly 2012). As a result, class serves a higher purpose of being granted access to the accessibility of
better medical resources and standard of care. Conversely, the construct of class not only gives and takes away in its relation to recieving appropriate

Essay About Race In America
The Talk About Race in America
Race, or the major factor used to divide and group humans impacts the lives of many worldwide, especially since the connotation of "race" makes the
term extremely controversial. Moreover, many people argue that race relations are improving, whereas critics claim that they will never change for the
better. Various studies show thatrace can be recognized by many individuals as early as six months old. Additionally, Djamba and Kimuna, two scholars
from the International Journal of Population Research, discuss the issue in relation to employment, where race may draw the line. The conclusions that
the articles presented reach the concerning race, address the stereotypes one can draw about race, the background...show more content...
The credibility of the authors makes the source a reliable one, especially since they integrated data from the U.S. Department of State's Immigration
Records when comparing the number of foreign–born immigrants who are given the permission to work in the United States. One issue the authors
appear to show is the repetitiveness within their article, as they should have expanded their argument, including other topics that reflect upon the act of
race relations based on employment. This could be a great source to use for my research paper as it includes the statistics behind the increasing number
of male Black Africans, proving race relations are steadily improving to an extent. Djamba and Kimuna's source relates to all other sources I present by
triggering a certain factor upon the term race; African male immigrant's position in the employment industry. Instead of focusing on race altogether
their source becomes entitled to the factor of employment as the source differentiates among the rest of the sources presented one being Skrentny's

Reflection On Race And Race
Sex and gender and Race and ethnicity were two topics that really stood out to me during the course of this class. The reason those topics caught my
attention was because I didn't realize how unaware I was of all of the social problems surrounding those topics still going on today. I assumed we had
already conquered racism and sexism in the 21st century with the civil rights movement with Martin Luther King jr., the 19th amendment granting
women the right to vote, and women's rights movements in the 1960s. But I was clearly blind to the amount of institutional sexism and racism that
still take place in education systems, athletics, the workplace, media, health care systems etc. Such as girls receiving less teacher attention and less
useful feedback than boys, girls not being seen as strong enough for certain sports, workers of color being concentrated in lower–paying jobs, members
of ethnoracial minorities are less likely to have access to health insurance etc. I was fascinated with looking at the most common environments
with a fresh pair of eyes and a different outlook on everyday life. Seeing how different the world I conjured up in my head is from reality was a wake
up call for me to be more conscious of the unequal world we live in as well as the start of curiosity to understand how the world we live in works and
why.
I was always so oblivious to the inequalities that come with not being a male, but one of the important things I learned in this class was about the

Narrative Essay On Race
My family and friends know I don't spend much time on Facebook, but for better or worse I am going to break form and launch some thoughts into
the ether ... A few days ago, a friend posted a Young Turk's video commentary on the beating Thomas Jennings received from two Brooklyn police
officers. Someone responded to the post: "SMH." To which my friend replied: "Smh isn't even enough." I'm so out of touch I had to look up 'SMH'.
Once enlightened, I almost joined in with "It's time for all us 'average' folks to SOF: Shake our fists." But I held back. No; SOF isn't nearly enough,
either. Not just lately, and often, I wonder how an average person can push back against this ongoing tragedy. Folks a lot smarter, more determined and
more selfless than me have tried but our country continues to wrestle w/ its great nagging birthmark: Race. What realistic chance does one privileged,
congenitally average middle–class white male* have against the bias–based inequities he has witnessed, and, yes – occasionally taken advantage of –
throughout his life? Still, there has to be something more than bouts of outrage that dissipate into the spiritual laziness of "Yeah, but what can I do?" I
am part of the majority who enjoy the luxury grieving from a safe distance. And history teaches that things don't improve unless enough of us 'average'

Reflective Essay On Race And Ethnicity
Talk about race and ethnicity, sometimes get hard to keep it in the gray area. My story started with my first time working in USA. When I started that
job search in the agencies, I found that mixture of race and ethnicity of people from different countries. Wanting to share with them during work
without malice any framework my way of being: the power of labels in race and ethnicity. When you don't know diverse cultures, it is difficult when
another arrives without resentment. When you send us to work through the agency, try to establish a friendship with the co–workers with whom you
would spend all day. Understand that being in a country other than yours. While we worked during that day I felt some displeasure on the part of
one of the coworkers; because I showed a desire to learn and do my best work, so they can send me to a job. Well. At the end of the day, the
supervisor talked to me more and the group's directions were given through me as the one who interacted more with him and paid more attention to the
details.
The supervisor sent us to cover and move some things from the house where we were. After finishing moving them, we began to work with the water
accident inside the house, everything that was wet directly to the dump. The walls, the wooden beginning, were dismantled little by little and for the
dump. The problem started with the African–American, who was working very fast and who paid us by the hour; but the supervisor divided us into
two groups of 2 people.

Essay On Race And Sociology
The History of Sociology and Race
Race is the division between different ethnicities or people with different backgrounds that live in one society. So why is race important? Well, people
have the feeling of categorizing, making people feel uncomfortable towards other races, which can lead to discrimination. The way sociologist uses the
concept of race and ethnicity, is by connecting the idea of majority and minority groups with social structures of inequality, stratification and power.
Race refers to physical differences that cultures and groups consider socially significant. While sociology is the study of social life and social change,
how social causes and consequences of human behavior affect society. Sociologists spend time investigating the structure of different groups,
organizations and societies, on how people within these contexts interact. Race has adopted to the idea of white's social change in power during the

Race : Race And Racial Identity Essay
Race is a social–constructed terminology where it categorizes people into groups that share certain distinctive physical characteristics such as skin
color. However, race and racial identity is unstable, unfixed and constantly shifting, as race, typically, is a signifier of prevalent social conflict and
interest. Although, many, particularly anthropologists and sociologists, argue in the aforementioned point of view, some– mainly white population ––
believe that racial characteristics are biologically inherited. What contributes to people becoming racist? Numerous factors contribute to the
construction of people's beliefs and ideologies. First, childhood environment plays a fundamental part in creating one's identity, such as, residing in a
monoracial neighbourhood, and family and friends' sociopolitical view. Second, academic curriculum determines what information one receives. As
each curriculum emphasizes varying aspects of historical background. For example, religious schools and racially homogeneous schools tend to have
different academic curriculum. All of these components ultimately contribute to finalizing people's mindsets: ignorance, religious belief, hereditary
beliefs, and spatial and social isolation. My upbringing took place in the city of Victoria located in British Columbia; a city recognized for its rich
nature, island community, and predominant white population. This town–like–city is a small rural community constructed upon

What Is Race: My Reflection Essay
I took the time today to read the article titled "What is Race" by Victor M. Fernandez, RN, BSN and found myself agreeably intrigued and in
admiration of his thoughts regarding race. Victor touched on an extremely insightful and significant topic; one that most people have sturdy opinions
about. Race – what is it? What does this mean to you? What does it mean to our upcoming careers in the nursing field? I trust that how we characterize
and assess our awareness of race is due exclusively to how we were raised. I do not mean merely what we were taught from our family or culture
about race, but to a certain extent how we have lived it, and how it has lived around us. "Race is a modern idea. Ancient societies, like the Greeks, did

Does everyone feel this way about different races? No, I don't think that they do. There is still a tendency to judge and stereotype based on racial
profiling; not everyone was raised the same way that I was. Does this mean that I believe racism in present society is still largely a concern? This is a
challenging question to answer because so many variables can play into this. You see racism everyday when a person of Middle Eastern ethnicity
boards an airplane, or you happen to end up in a cab with an Iranian driver. However, I do not exclusively believe that this means racism is a serious
problem. It is human nature to fear the unknown and for a lot of people this fear inadvertently creates racial prejudice.
Could it be that racial profiling – stereotyping – has worsened in present day? Again, this is a terribly difficult question to answer due to the vast
amounts of variables that can play into it. "In 19th century, the concept of nationalism was often used to justify the domination of one race over
another within a specific nation, in the last decades of the 20th century; the legal system as well as the official ideology emphasized racial equality.
Racial prejudice remains a continuing problem throughout the world. However, there are fewer race–based conflicts in the 21st century than in the
past" (Ethnicity vs. Race). I believe that people, nowadays, are more

Essay On Race And Ethnicity
Race and ethnicity is something that we all have to live with because we all have a race and ethnicity that claims us. Race and ethnicity was
something discussed daily at my household because I was the only Hispanic at my school until the third grade. This was difficult because as a child
it's hard to understand why my skin color, language, and ideals are different. I wouldn't have survived school without my parents and support from my
instructors that allowed me to transition into the mainstream without a traumatic effect. Throughout the year my parents would take me to activities
like Cinco De Mayo, Religious activities, Independence of Mexico, and other cultural events that celebrated our history and culture. This helped feed
my love for my culture and ancestors. Race is usually determined by how one looks but your...show more content...

embrace your ethnicity in a positive manner.
It doesn't matter to which ethnic group one belongs to, it all depends on the environment you grow up in. I would have the same mentality of respect
for my culture and history. I think my childhood would all depend on my parents because they are the ones who help teach us about our culture and
how we should act and treat others. They lay down the foundation to how you view the world and how the world will view you as part of society.

Over the course of this class, my understanding of Race and Racism in higher education has change my views and opinions on what the aspect of race
and racism really is and how it can make a huge impact in our lives.
This course help me use my own personal experiences to understand different race and racism concepts in class. I can refer to my first Write–to–Learn

got to write something relating to a racial matter. I didn't feel afraid to share my experiences because I knew that it would matter as I further my
knowledge as the course goes on. I can reflect on my personal experiences for this class because a lot of the terms we went over such as onlyness,

Reflection On Race And Ethnicity
To reflect on race and ethnicity, you must know what does it mean. What is Race? What is Ethnicity? According to Parillo, Race is a categorization
in which people sharing visible biological characteristics regard themselves or are regarded by others as a single group on that basis. Ethnicity is
shared cultural traits and/or national origin (2016). I believe their still some confusing between the two terms. Most people I asked about race and
ethnicity, they thought they were the same thing. However, I thought so too until I started this class. Race still a complicated category due to the
visible biological characteristics. With the wide ranges of physical appearances, it makes it difficult to determine what category each person should be
in. I believe this brings about racism. According to Parillo, racism slowly evolved out of sorting humans into categories based physical appearances
(2016). However, ethnicity caused racism within the races due to the different languages and cultural traits. A good example is Rwanda genocide in
1994. This was mass slaughtered trying to wipe out the entire Tutsi ethnic group which killing over 800,000 people. In America, I wonder if the same
thing is happening among African Americans. They are being sent to the prison systems due to the systematic racism They are getting longer prison
sentences or getting murdered by police officers due to systematic racism.
Growing up, I learned the following things about race and ethnicity
I was born in upstate New York. When I was about 4 years old, my family decided to move to eastern North Carolina. My parents were originally
from North Carolina and, so they decide to move back home to their hometown. They thought moving to the South was better to raise a family. I
have seen my father's talk about racism in the South and compare to the living in the North. My father has told me that he worked around every
race and ethnic groups. When we move to the South, I saw the frustration that my father face as an African American male. The racism for against
my dad was depraved that we were going to move back to New York after only being in North Carolina for only three years. As I look back, I wish we
did return to New York. My mother was

Synthesis Essay On Race
Think about how much race affects a person every day. Maybe today you disclosed your race on the SATs or were passed over for a job opportunity
because your name is too "black". Race exists in our culture, but racism should not. Everyone tries to get rid of it, but humans ultimately created it,
because it is a construct of cultural. Every day we form judgements and fall into stereotypes. Our children watch this discrimination and let it carry into
their own futures. Strangely, these judgements and stereotypes are not technically race, merely the creations of an ignorant culture. To begin avoiding
this, people need to learn that technical race and our world view of race are very different, and that humans may be too unique for concrete groupings.

The "AAA Statement on Race" explains "...that human populations are not unambiguous, clearly demarcated, biologically distinct groups." Our
population is a melting pot of skin colors, hair textures, and facial features, yet these distinctions seem to separate us in the wrong way. These
groups can give us vital medical information, such as races that are prone to heart disease, but we instead manipulate these groups to create
deficient stereotypes. (Boyd and Silk: 388) Moreover, a certain number of races does not exist because every human is unique, therefore these
stereotypes are just fabricated from our culture. There is more difference within groups than between groups. (Boyd and Silk: 389) Accordingly,
this diversity should be respected instead of putting people against each other. "The differences between races are due to biological heritage." (Boyd
and Silk: 388) Just because we are similar in race does not mean we are the same type of people and fall into the same stereotypes. If there is more
diversity within groups, dividing race into three or four groups is not accurate

Society Based On Race
Is power in our society based on race? The answer to that question is yes. People all over our country have to deal with racism and not having the
advantages that whites have. Even the privileged citizens of color are discriminated. Therefore, yes, power in our society is based on race. My first
point would be about the athletes of America. Most likely an African–American athlete is less privileged than his white competitors. Whether that is
with equipment, training, or even opportunities. However, if you look at college sports, the majority of the athletes are people of color. This has to
do with the recognition of the coaches and recruiters that are giving these kids an escape of the life they are living. Sports have the power to bring
people together of all colors and races. So, if we can break the discrimination even more we will look to them for guidance. Athletes are one of the
most influential groups of people on the planet and need to break all the racial benefits and things players receive. Another solid point would be in our
own communities. Especially in the urban communities. All kids, but especially kids of color are most likely to have parents that are barely there or
even in trouble with the law. They are doomed to deal with drugs, violence, and many other things...show more content...
But, in some ways all races of the same advantages or disadvantages. White people do, usually, have a better chance at first based on their color.
Therefore, we as a public see more successful caucasian people. But, some white people also have their solid chance at life ripped away. There are
white people that grow up poor and are not able to afford all the chances of education they need. Some also grow up around drugs, violence, and many
other nasty things no one should go through. Other races do not get the same chance in life white people do, but some white citizens also get that

Race And Racism : Racism Essay
The concept of race and racism has transformed over time and is seen through the eyes of everyone in our world. It unfortunately seems to be the
norm for the public to not only assume an individual 's race and to separate them to be distant from one another, but to also pigeon hole every race in
a restricted category. This has been going on for so long that we would expect everyone to view society this way, however that might not be the case
for all citizens within the United States. Now the question is, where do we learn these ideas from? How do people have this thoughts ingrained in their
brain? There are many definitions of race, but how they come about? Whether it is from relatives, media, or even from blatantly witnessing it around
us, everyone has a different way of learning what race is.
When speaking with my mother, Clara Salas, a short, humble woman with red/brown hair and a smile that could light up a room, she had quite a
bit to say on the matter. Throughout our interview I flooded her with questions on racial construction and how she has came to know what race
meant and what it was. First on how see saw race and if these so called divisions within the community wherever in place. Speaking with a soft yet
firm tone, she began, "From a young age I never saw a behavioral difference or divide within racial groups because from where I was, everyone from
all different racial crowds were integrated." She said. I looked at my mother in awe as though this was not

Essay On Race Relations
Race in the United States has always been a problem in the past and still remains the same in the present society. Race relations is defined by relations
between members or communities of different races within one country (en.oxforddictionairies.com). Minorities have been denied legally and socially
rights in the past by the dominant race, White Americans. Now in modern society minorities are the majority of the United States, but are still being
racial targeted, profiled and killed by White Americans. In functionalism theory, race serves an order to conform to society. Since the beginning of time
discrimination from the dominated race towards has affected minorities. Dominate group believes that minorities must be assimilated into their society.
A great example would be slavery, the whites dominated and controlled and owned slaves, to improve the daily lives of whites for profit, and other

An example of conflict theory in today's time would be that African Americans are being targeted by police, as a result, it causes protests, and
brings up more violence towards the police authority. This caused blacks to still struggle for equal rights as same of whites, which is irregular to do
so. Racial tensions do not only linger between African Americans and Whites but also many other races. Police brutality in America has doubled,
African Americans and Latinos are more likely to get pulled over by a police officer than any other race while being racially attacked when doing so.
Another conflict would be how stereotypes are giving to racial minorities, such as the 9/11 terrorist attack, which took a toll society to believe every
Muslim is a terrorist. Even the race relations has taken an effect on the workplace, media, and education as well, that creates these problems that
minorities have to overcome differently than the

Essay about Race and Ethnicity
Upon entering the class I was anxious, curious, and also oblivious to the ideas I would be encountering. Like other students who had not previously

of ethnic and race relations. I realized I knew little about race or ethnicity, and even the possible similarities or differences. However, I welcomed the
opportunity to further discover the possibilities of the class. My understanding of race was concentrated in a definition that could be understood as

Explanations as to why such areas seemed trivial in my life may possibly be found in the life I have lived.
My pre–adolescent years were spent in a community thick with diversity. My friendships were as diverse as the environment in which I lived. It never
struck me that racial and ethnic ideals separated people in society. However, upon moving to a predominately whiteupper–class community I began to
question such racial and ethnic ideas. From my adolescent years through today I began noticing that certain people are viewed differently for reasons
relating to race and ethnicity. As a result, the most recent community I grew up in has kept me sheltered from aspects of society. As a product of a
community where majorities existed, I found myself unexposed to the full understanding of race and ethnicity. Prior to the class I had never fully
dealt with issues of race or ethnicity, as a result I wondered why they would be of any importance in my life.
Nonetheless, these feeling changed. Even though my understanding of ethnicity and race was limited my interest for understanding grew. For example,
one weekend among peers at Connecticut College my last name was referred to in conversation about the Jewish population on campus. Without any
hesitation the people around me highlighted a distinction that I was not Jewish due to my German name and looks, and therefore not included with the
concern of the discussion. I came to wonder why such a distinction was made. I knew that

Essay On Race In Society
Race plays several roles in society. It can be a controversial topic, a scapegoat to issues, a topic to critically study, or a source to reference in different
areas of research. Whatever role it takes shows how it is inherently part of our communities. With these ideas in mind, race matters today because it
affects a variety of elements in society, such as education, politics, and health care. By assessing how it affects these specific aspects, one can note that
it creates many contemporary issues in the United States. However, it is possible to overcome these problems if society decides to gear towards a post
racial future of this country. Educational systems in the United States are heavily influenced by racial requirements. One of the many requirements that
holds a strong impact in these systems is implementing affirmative action in these communities. Affirmative action is a product of "the 1960's Civil
Rights Movement, intended to provide equal opportunities for members of minority groups and women in education" (NCSL). In other words,...show

With all of these problems raised by the concept of race, society will eventually overcome them and escape from any forms of racial preference,
discrimination, and prejudice. This is the ideology behind a post racial future. However, it is difficult to attain in that it tries to eradicate any form of
racial thoughts, which in fact, race is socially constructed (Kim 1063). A post racial future would require the deconstruction of such a concept from
society and leads individuals to turn to other forms in order to distinguish each other, whether it be by religion or gender. While it would seem nice
that individuals are not stereotyped in an offensive manner due to their race in a post racial future, it is up to society to see whether there are benefits

Essay On Racial Identity
The concept of racial identity has been misunderstood and had been contested for the last few decades. As a biological category is concerned, race
is derived from any person's physical features, Gene pools and character qualities. The Caucasoid population is often considered as having more
physical abilities and moral qualities followed by Mongoloid and the Negroid population. Racial identity is being considered as a surface level
mainstream based on what we look about the matter of racial identities. Racial identities can adversely affect any relationship with the concept of
learning that individuals get acquired in their own environments. Today theoretically as well as literally the manifestations of racial identity are
discussed not only in the biological order but has been accepted as a social construction, which basically refers to a sense of a particular group or the

When we think of identity, there are many different things that come to mind such as race, gender, personality, sexuality and many others. In this
essay I am going to focus on racial identity and skin color. You are going to be reading about some things that I struggled with in my life being

sort of robber or that he would steal from the store. "'Can I help you?' The 7–11 clerk asked me loudly Searching for some response that I wasn't an

Racism In Health-Care Essay

  • 1. Racism in Health-care Essay Throughout American history, relationships between racial and ethnic groups have been marked by antagonism, inequality, and violence. In today's complex and fast–paced society, historians, social theorists and anthropologists have been known to devote significant amounts of time examining and interrogating not only the interior climate of the institutions that shape human behavior and personalities, but also relations between race and culture. It is difficult to tolerate the notion; America has won its victory over racism. Even though many maintain America is a "color blind nation," racism and racial conflict remain to be prevalent in the social fabric of American institutions. As a result, one may question if issues and challenges...show more content... In doing so, he pays particularly close attention to black patients and their relations with health care policies and practices. Smedly maintains that blacks are not only the victims of, inpatient and outpatient treatment, racial policies, and other services but also the victims of its consequences. He argues that many health care administrators are agents to a system of inequality that support provider and administrator biases, geographical inequalities, and racial stereotypes (Smedly 2012). In the field of health care there is a pervasive notion that many blacks are presumed to be low income. It is interesting to see how blackness is associated with low income and class. For example, questions regarding where black patients reside and what their current occupation is can be directly linked to racial profiling in health care. The author contends black patients are more likely to receive a lower quality of health care due to one's insurance status and income. Here, too, one can maintain that race is deeply interwoven into the construct of class and accessibility (Smedly 2012). As a result, class serves a higher purpose of being granted access to the accessibility of better medical resources and standard of care. Conversely, the construct of class not only gives and takes away in its relation to recieving appropriate resources in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Essay About Race In America The Talk About Race in America Race, or the major factor used to divide and group humans impacts the lives of many worldwide, especially since the connotation of "race" makes the term extremely controversial. Moreover, many people argue that race relations are improving, whereas critics claim that they will never change for the better. Various studies show thatrace can be recognized by many individuals as early as six months old. Additionally, Djamba and Kimuna, two scholars from the International Journal of Population Research, discuss the issue in relation to employment, where race may draw the line. The conclusions that the articles presented reach the concerning race, address the stereotypes one can draw about race, the background...show more content... The credibility of the authors makes the source a reliable one, especially since they integrated data from the U.S. Department of State's Immigration Records when comparing the number of foreign–born immigrants who are given the permission to work in the United States. One issue the authors appear to show is the repetitiveness within their article, as they should have expanded their argument, including other topics that reflect upon the act of race relations based on employment. This could be a great source to use for my research paper as it includes the statistics behind the increasing number of male Black Africans, proving race relations are steadily improving to an extent. Djamba and Kimuna's source relates to all other sources I present by triggering a certain factor upon the term race; African male immigrant's position in the employment industry. Instead of focusing on race altogether their source becomes entitled to the factor of employment as the source differentiates among the rest of the sources presented one being Skrentny's source. • 3. Reflection On Race And Race Sex and gender and Race and ethnicity were two topics that really stood out to me during the course of this class. The reason those topics caught my attention was because I didn't realize how unaware I was of all of the social problems surrounding those topics still going on today. I assumed we had already conquered racism and sexism in the 21st century with the civil rights movement with Martin Luther King jr., the 19th amendment granting women the right to vote, and women's rights movements in the 1960s. But I was clearly blind to the amount of institutional sexism and racism that still take place in education systems, athletics, the workplace, media, health care systems etc. Such as girls receiving less teacher attention and less useful feedback than boys, girls not being seen as strong enough for certain sports, workers of color being concentrated in lower–paying jobs, members of ethnoracial minorities are less likely to have access to health insurance etc. I was fascinated with looking at the most common environments with a fresh pair of eyes and a different outlook on everyday life. Seeing how different the world I conjured up in my head is from reality was a wake up call for me to be more conscious of the unequal world we live in as well as the start of curiosity to understand how the world we live in works and why. I was always so oblivious to the inequalities that come with not being a male, but one of the important things I learned in this class was about the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Narrative Essay On Race My family and friends know I don't spend much time on Facebook, but for better or worse I am going to break form and launch some thoughts into the ether ... A few days ago, a friend posted a Young Turk's video commentary on the beating Thomas Jennings received from two Brooklyn police officers. Someone responded to the post: "SMH." To which my friend replied: "Smh isn't even enough." I'm so out of touch I had to look up 'SMH'. Once enlightened, I almost joined in with "It's time for all us 'average' folks to SOF: Shake our fists." But I held back. No; SOF isn't nearly enough, either. Not just lately, and often, I wonder how an average person can push back against this ongoing tragedy. Folks a lot smarter, more determined and more selfless than me have tried but our country continues to wrestle w/ its great nagging birthmark: Race. What realistic chance does one privileged, congenitally average middle–class white male* have against the bias–based inequities he has witnessed, and, yes – occasionally taken advantage of – throughout his life? Still, there has to be something more than bouts of outrage that dissipate into the spiritual laziness of "Yeah, but what can I do?" I am part of the majority who enjoy the luxury grieving from a safe distance. And history teaches that things don't improve unless enough of us 'average' folks cross...show more content... Call it the 'Passive Ploy'. Would it change anything? Create unintended consequences? Really annoy your average cop who is simply trying to do his or her job? Does this well–intentioned post inadvertently expose my own engrained, unconscious biases? I don't know. But I figured I'd put it out there Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Reflective Essay On Race And Ethnicity Talk about race and ethnicity, sometimes get hard to keep it in the gray area. My story started with my first time working in USA. When I started that job search in the agencies, I found that mixture of race and ethnicity of people from different countries. Wanting to share with them during work without malice any framework my way of being: the power of labels in race and ethnicity. When you don't know diverse cultures, it is difficult when another arrives without resentment. When you send us to work through the agency, try to establish a friendship with the co–workers with whom you would spend all day. Understand that being in a country other than yours. While we worked during that day I felt some displeasure on the part of one of the coworkers; because I showed a desire to learn and do my best work, so they can send me to a job. Well. At the end of the day, the supervisor talked to me more and the group's directions were given through me as the one who interacted more with him and paid more attention to the details. The supervisor sent us to cover and move some things from the house where we were. After finishing moving them, we began to work with the water accident inside the house, everything that was wet directly to the dump. The walls, the wooden beginning, were dismantled little by little and for the dump. The problem started with the African–American, who was working very fast and who paid us by the hour; but the supervisor divided us into two groups of 2 people. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Essay On Race And Sociology The History of Sociology and Race Race is the division between different ethnicities or people with different backgrounds that live in one society. So why is race important? Well, people have the feeling of categorizing, making people feel uncomfortable towards other races, which can lead to discrimination. The way sociologist uses the concept of race and ethnicity, is by connecting the idea of majority and minority groups with social structures of inequality, stratification and power. Race refers to physical differences that cultures and groups consider socially significant. While sociology is the study of social life and social change, how social causes and consequences of human behavior affect society. Sociologists spend time investigating the structure of different groups, organizations and societies, on how people within these contexts interact. Race has adopted to the idea of white's social change in power during the Great Depression Era. • 7. Race : Race And Racial Identity Essay Race is a social–constructed terminology where it categorizes people into groups that share certain distinctive physical characteristics such as skin color. However, race and racial identity is unstable, unfixed and constantly shifting, as race, typically, is a signifier of prevalent social conflict and interest. Although, many, particularly anthropologists and sociologists, argue in the aforementioned point of view, some– mainly white population –– believe that racial characteristics are biologically inherited. What contributes to people becoming racist? Numerous factors contribute to the construction of people's beliefs and ideologies. First, childhood environment plays a fundamental part in creating one's identity, such as, residing in a monoracial neighbourhood, and family and friends' sociopolitical view. Second, academic curriculum determines what information one receives. As each curriculum emphasizes varying aspects of historical background. For example, religious schools and racially homogeneous schools tend to have different academic curriculum. All of these components ultimately contribute to finalizing people's mindsets: ignorance, religious belief, hereditary beliefs, and spatial and social isolation. My upbringing took place in the city of Victoria located in British Columbia; a city recognized for its rich nature, island community, and predominant white population. This town–like–city is a small rural community constructed upon Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. What Is Race: My Reflection Essay I took the time today to read the article titled "What is Race" by Victor M. Fernandez, RN, BSN and found myself agreeably intrigued and in admiration of his thoughts regarding race. Victor touched on an extremely insightful and significant topic; one that most people have sturdy opinions about. Race – what is it? What does this mean to you? What does it mean to our upcoming careers in the nursing field? I trust that how we characterize and assess our awareness of race is due exclusively to how we were raised. I do not mean merely what we were taught from our family or culture about race, but to a certain extent how we have lived it, and how it has lived around us. "Race is a modern idea. Ancient societies, like the Greeks, did not divide...show more content... Does everyone feel this way about different races? No, I don't think that they do. There is still a tendency to judge and stereotype based on racial profiling; not everyone was raised the same way that I was. Does this mean that I believe racism in present society is still largely a concern? This is a challenging question to answer because so many variables can play into this. You see racism everyday when a person of Middle Eastern ethnicity boards an airplane, or you happen to end up in a cab with an Iranian driver. However, I do not exclusively believe that this means racism is a serious problem. It is human nature to fear the unknown and for a lot of people this fear inadvertently creates racial prejudice. Could it be that racial profiling – stereotyping – has worsened in present day? Again, this is a terribly difficult question to answer due to the vast amounts of variables that can play into it. "In 19th century, the concept of nationalism was often used to justify the domination of one race over another within a specific nation, in the last decades of the 20th century; the legal system as well as the official ideology emphasized racial equality. Racial prejudice remains a continuing problem throughout the world. However, there are fewer race–based conflicts in the 21st century than in the past" (Ethnicity vs. Race). • 9. Essay On Race And Ethnicity Race and ethnicity is something that we all have to live with because we all have a race and ethnicity that claims us. Race and ethnicity was something discussed daily at my household because I was the only Hispanic at my school until the third grade. This was difficult because as a child it's hard to understand why my skin color, language, and ideals are different. I wouldn't have survived school without my parents and support from my instructors that allowed me to transition into the mainstream without a traumatic effect. Throughout the year my parents would take me to activities like Cinco De Mayo, Religious activities, Independence of Mexico, and other cultural events that celebrated our history and culture. This helped feed my love for my culture and ancestors. Race is usually determined by how one looks but your...show more content... (Catholic/Hispanic) Ethnicity is something that you can't change and if you disrespect or deny it then you are disrespecting your ancestors. You can't change who you are or where you came from. I believe that we should embrace your ethnicity in a positive manner. It doesn't matter to which ethnic group one belongs to, it all depends on the environment you grow up in. I would have the same mentality of respect for my culture and history. I think my childhood would all depend on my parents because they are the ones who help teach us about our culture and how we should act and treat others. They lay down the foundation to how you view the world and how the world will view you as part of society. One has to evaluate his/her thoughts, ideas, behavior patterns, customs, values, skills, language, arts, and faith or religion to understand and respect others who might not share the same culture or Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Essay On Race And Racism Over the course of this class, my understanding of Race and Racism in higher education has change my views and opinions on what the aspect of race and racism really is and how it can make a huge impact in our lives. This course help me use my own personal experiences to understand different race and racism concepts in class. I can refer to my first Write–to–Learn (WTL) to the film "White People" by Jose Antonio Vargas. He talks about how our generation of white people view different topics regardingrace. I got wrote a letter to him speaking about my views on the film as well as my own experiences and I will have to say that this was the first time I ever got to write something relating to a racial matter. I didn't feel afraid to share my experiences because I knew that it would matter as I further my knowledge as the course goes on. I can reflect on my personal experiences for this class because a lot of the terms we went over such as onlyness, stereotypical threats, and the model minority myth I've been through and I really never thought about it until I wrote my 8th WTL about Shaun Harper article "Am I my Brother's Teacher?" and my second reflection paper on how my experiences have...show more content... • 11. Reflection On Race And Ethnicity To reflect on race and ethnicity, you must know what does it mean. What is Race? What is Ethnicity? According to Parillo, Race is a categorization in which people sharing visible biological characteristics regard themselves or are regarded by others as a single group on that basis. Ethnicity is shared cultural traits and/or national origin (2016). I believe their still some confusing between the two terms. Most people I asked about race and ethnicity, they thought they were the same thing. However, I thought so too until I started this class. Race still a complicated category due to the visible biological characteristics. With the wide ranges of physical appearances, it makes it difficult to determine what category each person should be in. I believe this brings about racism. According to Parillo, racism slowly evolved out of sorting humans into categories based physical appearances (2016). However, ethnicity caused racism within the races due to the different languages and cultural traits. A good example is Rwanda genocide in 1994. This was mass slaughtered trying to wipe out the entire Tutsi ethnic group which killing over 800,000 people. In America, I wonder if the same thing is happening among African Americans. They are being sent to the prison systems due to the systematic racism They are getting longer prison sentences or getting murdered by police officers due to systematic racism. Growing up, I learned the following things about race and ethnicity I was born in upstate New York. When I was about 4 years old, my family decided to move to eastern North Carolina. My parents were originally from North Carolina and, so they decide to move back home to their hometown. They thought moving to the South was better to raise a family. I have seen my father's talk about racism in the South and compare to the living in the North. My father has told me that he worked around every race and ethnic groups. When we move to the South, I saw the frustration that my father face as an African American male. The racism for against my dad was depraved that we were going to move back to New York after only being in North Carolina for only three years. As I look back, I wish we did return to New York. • 12. Synthesis Essay On Race Think about how much race affects a person every day. Maybe today you disclosed your race on the SATs or were passed over for a job opportunity because your name is too "black". Race exists in our culture, but racism should not. Everyone tries to get rid of it, but humans ultimately created it, because it is a construct of cultural. Every day we form judgements and fall into stereotypes. Our children watch this discrimination and let it carry into their own futures. Strangely, these judgements and stereotypes are not technically race, merely the creations of an ignorant culture. To begin avoiding this, people need to learn that technical race and our world view of race are very different, and that humans may be too unique for concrete groupings. ...show more content... The "AAA Statement on Race" explains "...that human populations are not unambiguous, clearly demarcated, biologically distinct groups." Our population is a melting pot of skin colors, hair textures, and facial features, yet these distinctions seem to separate us in the wrong way. These groups can give us vital medical information, such as races that are prone to heart disease, but we instead manipulate these groups to create deficient stereotypes. (Boyd and Silk: 388) Moreover, a certain number of races does not exist because every human is unique, therefore these stereotypes are just fabricated from our culture. There is more difference within groups than between groups. (Boyd and Silk: 389) Accordingly, this diversity should be respected instead of putting people against each other. "The differences between races are due to biological heritage." (Boyd and Silk: 388) Just because we are similar in race does not mean we are the same type of people and fall into the same stereotypes. If there is more diversity within groups, dividing race into three or four groups is not accurate Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Society Based On Race Is power in our society based on race? The answer to that question is yes. People all over our country have to deal with racism and not having the advantages that whites have. Even the privileged citizens of color are discriminated. Therefore, yes, power in our society is based on race. My first point would be about the athletes of America. Most likely an African–American athlete is less privileged than his white competitors. Whether that is with equipment, training, or even opportunities. However, if you look at college sports, the majority of the athletes are people of color. This has to do with the recognition of the coaches and recruiters that are giving these kids an escape of the life they are living. Sports have the power to bring people together of all colors and races. So, if we can break the discrimination even more we will look to them for guidance. Athletes are one of the most influential groups of people on the planet and need to break all the racial benefits and things players receive. Another solid point would be in our own communities. Especially in the urban communities. All kids, but especially kids of color are most likely to have parents that are barely there or even in trouble with the law. There are white people that grow up poor and are not able to afford all the chances of education they need. Some also grow up around drugs, violence, and many other nasty things no one should go through. Other races do not get the same chance in life white people do, but some white citizens also get that chance at a solid life Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Race And Racism : Racism Essay The concept of race and racism has transformed over time and is seen through the eyes of everyone in our world. It unfortunately seems to be the norm for the public to not only assume an individual 's race and to separate them to be distant from one another, but to also pigeon hole every race in a restricted category. This has been going on for so long that we would expect everyone to view society this way, however that might not be the case for all citizens within the United States. Now the question is, where do we learn these ideas from? How do people have this thoughts ingrained in their brain? There are many definitions of race, but how they come about? Whether it is from relatives, media, or even from blatantly witnessing it around us, everyone has a different way of learning what race is. When speaking with my mother, Clara Salas, a short, humble woman with red/brown hair and a smile that could light up a room, she had quite a bit to say on the matter. Throughout our interview I flooded her with questions on racial construction and how she has came to know what race meant and what it was. First on how see saw race and if these so called divisions within the community wherever in place. Speaking with a soft yet firm tone, she began, "From a young age I never saw a behavioral difference or divide within racial groups because from where I was, everyone from all different racial crowds were integrated." She said. I looked at my mother in awe as though this was not Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Essay On Race Relations Race in the United States has always been a problem in the past and still remains the same in the present society. Race relations is defined by relations between members or communities of different races within one country (en.oxforddictionairies.com). Minorities have been denied legally and socially rights in the past by the dominant race, White Americans. Now in modern society minorities are the majority of the United States, but are still being racial targeted, profiled and killed by White Americans. In functionalism theory, race serves an order to conform to society. Since the beginning of time discrimination from the dominated race towards has affected minorities. Dominate group believes that minorities must be assimilated into their society. A great example would be slavery, the whites dominated and controlled and owned slaves, to improve the daily lives of whites for profit, and other ...show more content... An example of conflict theory in today's time would be that African Americans are being targeted by police, as a result, it causes protests, and brings up more violence towards the police authority. This caused blacks to still struggle for equal rights as same of whites, which is irregular to do so. Racial tensions do not only linger between African Americans and Whites but also many other races. Police brutality in America has doubled, African Americans and Latinos are more likely to get pulled over by a police officer than any other race while being racially attacked when doing so. Another conflict would be how stereotypes are giving to racial minorities, such as the 9/11 terrorist attack, which took a toll society to believe every Muslim is a terrorist. Even the race relations has taken an effect on the workplace, media, and education as well, that creates these problems that minorities have to overcome differently than the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Essay about Race and Ethnicity Upon entering the class I was anxious, curious, and also oblivious to the ideas I would be encountering. Like other students who had not previously spent time discussing topics of race and ethnicity, I myself had nervous tendencies in assuming that such a class may not strengthen my understanding of ethnic and race relations. I realized I knew little about race or ethnicity, and even the possible similarities or differences. However, I welcomed the opportunity to further discover the possibilities of the class. My understanding of race was concentrated in a definition that could be understood as different skin colors. My limited conception of ethnicity applied to people's origin or where they lived. It seemed as though my lack of...show more content... Explanations as to why such areas seemed trivial in my life may possibly be found in the life I have lived. My pre–adolescent years were spent in a community thick with diversity. My friendships were as diverse as the environment in which I lived. It never struck me that racial and ethnic ideals separated people in society. However, upon moving to a predominately whiteupper–class community I began to question such racial and ethnic ideas. From my adolescent years through today I began noticing that certain people are viewed differently for reasons relating to race and ethnicity. As a result, the most recent community I grew up in has kept me sheltered from aspects of society. As a product of a community where majorities existed, I found myself unexposed to the full understanding of race and ethnicity. Prior to the class I had never fully dealt with issues of race or ethnicity, as a result I wondered why they would be of any importance in my life. Nonetheless, these feeling changed. Even though my understanding of ethnicity and race was limited my interest for understanding grew. For example, one weekend among peers at Connecticut College my last name was referred to in conversation about the Jewish population on campus. Without any hesitation the people around me highlighted a distinction that I was not Jewish due to my German name and looks, and therefore not included with the concern of the discussion. I came to wonder why such a distinction was made. I knew that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Essay On Race In Society Race plays several roles in society. It can be a controversial topic, a scapegoat to issues, a topic to critically study, or a source to reference in different areas of research. Whatever role it takes shows how it is inherently part of our communities. With these ideas in mind, race matters today because it affects a variety of elements in society, such as education, politics, and health care. By assessing how it affects these specific aspects, one can note that it creates many contemporary issues in the United States. However, it is possible to overcome these problems if society decides to gear towards a post racial future of this country. Educational systems in the United States are heavily influenced by racial requirements. One of the many requirements that holds a strong impact in these systems is implementing affirmative action in these communities. Affirmative action is a product of "the 1960's Civil Rights Movement, intended to provide equal opportunities for members of minority groups and women in education" (NCSL). In other words,...show more content... With all of these problems raised by the concept of race, society will eventually overcome them and escape from any forms of racial preference, discrimination, and prejudice. This is the ideology behind a post racial future. However, it is difficult to attain in that it tries to eradicate any form of racial thoughts, which in fact, race is socially constructed (Kim 1063). A post racial future would require the deconstruction of such a concept from society and leads individuals to turn to other forms in order to distinguish each other, whether it be by religion or gender. While it would seem nice that individuals are not stereotyped in an offensive manner due to their race in a post racial future, it is up to society to see whether there are benefits in living in this Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Essay On Racial Identity The concept of racial identity has been misunderstood and had been contested for the last few decades. As a biological category is concerned, race is derived from any person's physical features, Gene pools and character qualities. The Caucasoid population is often considered as having more physical abilities and moral qualities followed by Mongoloid and the Negroid population. Racial identity is being considered as a surface level mainstream based on what we look about the matter of racial identities. Racial identities can adversely affect any relationship with the concept of learning that individuals get acquired in their own environments. Today theoretically as well as literally the manifestations of racial identity are discussed not only in the biological order but has been accepted as a social construction, which basically refers to a sense of a particular group or the collective identity based on one's objective that he/she shares a common heritage with any of the social group concerned. In the cultural sense races may have exist in the human population for a longer period of time, but the biological meaning of the concept of race have been implemented objectively with different molecular genetic data through the method of hypothesis testing. Adaptive traits such as skin color have from the earlier times been used to define the races but on a whole they only reflect the existing environmental factor to which the populations have adapted for Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Racial Identity Essay When we think of identity, there are many different things that come to mind such as race, gender, personality, sexuality and many others. In this essay I am going to focus on racial identity and skin color. You are going to be reading about some things that I struggled with in my life being black and somewhat being different compared to everyone else. I will be comparing my stories to Sherman Alexie's experiences in life. Sherman Alexie is a indigenous american Poet, Short story writer and filmmaker who writes about his experiences that he had growing up because of his race or the way he looks. For this essay I am going to utilize "Indian Education" and two of my favorite stories by Sherman Alexie that I feel I can pertain to. In " Lone Ranger and Tonto fistfight in Heaven " Sherman walked into a corner store to and the employee assumed that he would be some sort of robber or that he would steal from the store. "'Can I help you?' The 7–11 clerk asked me loudly Searching for some response that I wasn't an armed robber." He experienced prejudice.
