2. Amsler chart
Amsler chart is a set of 7 charts (10x10 cm, each squars 5 mm) use
to detect small anomalies (around 1°)in the central VF that could
remain undetected by the usual method of VF testing.
Indication of amsler chart:
1)Suspected macular diseases
2) Unexplained visual loss
3)Questionable appearance of
the macular area in ophthalmoscopy
or biomicroscopy
(diagnostic tool that isused mainly in screening, detection and
monitoringmacular diseases)
3. procedures
Each chart substends 20 degrees when viewed at the
distance of 28-30 cm.
Each square subtends an angle of degree 1 degrees
The patient is made to wear his reading glasses if any,
holds the chart at (30cm) away in front of the eye.
Patient looks with each eye separately by covering one
eye.
Asked to focus at the small dot in the centre of the grid.
4. While he is looking at the dot, ask him to report if
any line on the grid is (distorted, broken, blurred
area, missing area, dark area, corners, sides, holes,
spots).
Mark the area of abnormality, if any on the chart
5. Types of amsler chart
Chart 1: it is standard chart, consist of white grid on a
black background with a central fixation point
Use in every cases enabling to
identify vairous form of distortion
and scotoma
Chart 2: similar to first chart with
additional two diagonal lines
extending from fixation point
6. Chart 3: it has red grid on a black
background for use when investigating
scotoma for color.
Chart 4: it has white dot but
no lines on a black background
which is designed to detect
scotoma only.
.
7. Chart 5: it has white parallel
line on black background,
oriented both horizontally and
verticality to detect metamorphopsia
Chart 6: Has black parallel line
on a white background, with 2 additional
linesin 1° also designed
for detecting metamorphopsia.
Chart 7: similar to chart 1 but
contain small squares in central 8°
