Pest Management (or) Integrated Pest
Management –
• IPM definition by FAO (1967)
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a system that,
in the context of associated environment and
population dynamics of the pest species, utilizes all
suitable techniques and methods in as compatible a
manner as possible and maintains pest populations
at levels below those causing economic injury.
Need for Pest Management (or) Why Pest
Management
• Development of resistance in insects against insecticides e.g. OP and synthetic pyrethroid
resistance in Helicoverpa armigera .
• Out break of secondary pests e.g. Whiteflies emerged as major pest when spraying
insecticide against H. armigera .
• Resurgence of target pests e.g. BPH of rice increased when some OP chemicals are applied.
• When number of application increases, profit decreases.
• Environmental contamination and reduction in its quality.
• Killing of non-target animals and natural enemies.
• Human and animal health hazards.
Pesticide application methods
• Ultra low volume sprayer (ULV) (Hand carried,
battery operated spinning dis-sprayer) :
 Here the pesticides are applied as such or with
less than 5 litres spray fluid produces fine
droplets (80 µm).
 These are light weight sprayers (less than 3 kg)
have a rotary atomiser (spinning disc) powered by
an enclosed DC motor with a plastic spray head,
a liquid reservoir, a handle and a power supply
unit.
 Liquid is gravity fed from polythene container
screwed into the spray head moulding and the
liquid is flung off by centrifugal force.
Bio pesticide
i. NPV (Nucleopolyhedro virus)
• e.g. HaNPV, SlNPV
ii. GV (Granulo virus)
• e.g. CiGV
Viruses coming under family
Baculoviridae cause disease in
lepidoptera larvae.
iii. BT (Bacillus thuringiensis )
 BT effective against lepidopteran.
 Spore forming (Facultative,
Crystelliferous)
 The produce spores and also toxin
(endotoxin).
 The endotoxin paralyses gut when
ingested .
Mode of Action
Pesticide residue
management
• Pesticide residues
The pesticide that remains in
the environment after
application causes problems to
humans and non-target
organisms .
e.g. Residues of DDT, HCH in
milk, vegetable above MRL.
Minimizing Exposure To
Pesticide Residues
Certain measures that can be taken to
minimize exposure to harmful residues:
• vegetables washes with water, NaCL,
vinegar.
• peeling fruits and vegetables.
• Cooking.
• Observe waiting periods
may help remove chemical residues that have
known high levels of pesticide residues, and
growing your own essential produce.
Biotechnology in Pest Management
• Wide hybridization:
 This technique involves transfer of genes from one species to other by conventional
breeding.
 The genes for resistance are transferred from a different species.
 e.g. WBPH resistant gene has been transferred to Oryza sativa from O.officinalis.
• Somaclonal variability:
 The variation observed in tissue culture derived progeny.
 e.g. Somaclonal variants of sorghum resistant to Spodoptera litura has been evolved.
• Transgenic plants:
 Transgenic plants are plants which possess one or more additional genes.
 This is achieved by cloning additional genes into the plant genome by genetic
engineering techniques. The added genes impart resistance to pests.
 Transgenic plants have been produced by addition of one or more following genes.
a. Bt endotoxin from Bacillus thuringiensis
b. Protease inhibitors
c. α-Amylase inhibitors
d. Lectins
e. Enzymes
• PYRAMIDING GENES
 Engineering transgenic crops with more than one gene to get multi- mechanistic
resistance is called pyramiding of genes.
 e.g. 1. The CpTi gene and pea lectin gene were cloned to produce a tranagenic tobacco.
2. Transgenic potato which express lectin and bean chitinase have been produced.
Thank You !
