QUEENIE MARIE O. ALAS, MBA

Background of the study
• The satisfactory performance of small-scale businesses is an
important mainstream in a nation’s economy (Bagudu et al.,
2016).
• However, report of Bagudu et al. (2016) indicated that poor
business performance among this sector remains an increasing
problem among financial experts worldwide due to the fact that
the industrial sector is represented by almost 90% of the small-

• In the Philippines, Elvinia (2005) reported that small-scale
enterprises continually face many impediments to succeed.
Background of the study
• On one hand, Cautero and Rasure (2021) described microfinance
as a type of banking service provided to unemployed or low-
income persons or businesses who in any other case would have
no different get admission to economic services.
• Meanwhile, several studies indicate significant relationship
between microfinance and business performance of small scale
businesses. However, those studies were conducted in foreign
setting and utilized qualitative approach.
• It is on this context, that the researcher felt the need to fill-in the
research gap of conducting a study in the Philippine setting,
particularly in Davao del Norte using a quantitative approach.
