ABUSE OF ANTIBIOTICS

6. • Antibiotics play life-saving role, but it's a matter of concern that
some antibiotics are becoming ineffective or show resistance
against some bacteria. Bacteria become resistant to an antibiotic
if used unnecessarily, inappropriately and in compromised
quality.

From a study, it was found that 347 (26.69%) out of 1300
participants experienced self medication with antibiotics. Another
study also found that 70% completed the course & 30% didn’t.
• So it is clear that antibiotics are not properly used in Bangladesh.
It is also seen that two or three antibiotics are prescribed for a
minor infection.

8. • Some doctors prescribe unnecessary antibiotics
on pestering by patients, while others do so to
avoid troubles of diagnosing diseases.
• On the contrary, many people don't take antibiotics
as per their doctor's prescription or fail to
complete the course, and such practices can put
their own as well as others' health at risk.
• Easy availability and poor regulatory controls for
selling these drugs.
