A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner is unique, tedious, but at the same time astonishing. In Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily", the plot takes place in
1894 which promptly paints a portrait for the reader. Within this time period, women are considered to be beneath men on the strata of society. The
story takes place in an era when women didn't have the right to vote, and were expected to take care of their husband and children, and any women
found deviating from that social norm were frowned upon. Miss Emily is portrayed as being the co–dependent and mawkish women, as expected in
accordance with the time period.Where Emily ostracizes herself from the stereotypical expectations of women is her reaction to change, including the
change with the death of her father and development of society with the reconstruction of the south. In the town of Jefferson readers can see the
gradual amounts of feminism, starting with the actions and comments made by the townspeople towards Miss Emily,listening to a man rather than a
woman, and finally dealing with the difficulties of people saying she cannot live without a man.
Living in a small town like Jefferson, word gets around fast. The comments and actions of the townspeople can be clearly heard by everyone. The
townspeople have begun to put themselves into Miss Emily's life. As they are standing on the streets watching her and Homer they start to talk and say

decision what so ever. Another tragic breaking point is displayed in "A Rose for Emily" when Emily kills her boyfriend because she does not want him

These slanderers abused Emily by stating, "Poor Emily. Her kinsfolk should come to her." (394). Emily was quite aware of the insults for she saw
these people whispering and peaking at her behind their blinds. She knew her status in the town and the situation. The narrator states, "she carried her
head high enough" even when they knew the gossip had finally gotten to her. Being an emotionally fragile and self–conscious woman, the slander was
devastating. Eventually, people in the town wrote to her cousins whom she had fallen–out with long ago. When her cousins came and visited, Emily
did two things, however separated by Faulkner into sections three and four. In section three, Emily went to the druggist and bought poison. The
town, thinking she would kill herself said, "it would be the best thing" (395). Then, in section four, Emily went "to the jewler's and ordered a
man's toilet set in silver" (395), and the town believed her and Homer Barron were going to get married. The narrator states, "We were really
glad." (395). After the cousins left, and Homer Barron came back to town (he had left to get away from the cousins), Homer was seen going into
Emily's house by a neighbor. "That was the last we saw of Homer Barron. And of Miss Emily for some time" (395), stated the narrator. Emily did not

The setting of the story takes place in Faulkner's make believe city of Yoknapatawpha, Mississippi. In a house that was once owned by the late Elder
Grierson. When the townspeople finally enter the room upstairs that "no one had seen in forty years" (Faulkner, Section 5), they are stunned by the
condition of Emily's once grandeur house. Furthermore, the house that once set on the "most select street" (Faulkner, Section 1) was now surrounded
by garages, cotton gins and was the only house left on the street. Although, once described as "a big, squarish frame house that had once been white,
decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies" (Harris), it is apparent that along with the family name, the family home had been on a
downward spiral for many years.
Although the story is told in first person, the narrator of the story is never named but it appears that the story could be told by any of the townspeople.
It has been said that the narrators "function is to be a window pane or mirror upon the life of Miss Emily Grierson" (Sullivan). The narrator often uses a
negative attitude toward both women and the African American race, furthermore making many statements in theshort story that would not be

During the conversation Miss Emily tells the men "See Colonel Sartoris. I have no taxes in Jefferson" (31). Colonel Sartoris has been dead for
almost ten years. Emily's behavior not only shows mental instability but also that she may be delusional and confused. "She was sick for a long
time. When we saw her again, her hair was cut short making her look like a girl" (32). Through this image the narrator portrays Emily regressing
back to her youth. It is at this point that Miss Emily is being seen around town with a young contractor named Homer Barron. Emily's behavior
takes another dramatic strange twist when she visits the druggist and requests some poison. The druggist asked Miss Emily "What kind? For rats
and such?" (33). to which Emily responds "I want the best one you have. I don't care what kind" (33). It is at this point that we truly begin to
question if Miss Emily has foul intentions. "She will kill herself" "She will marry him" "She will persuade him yet" (33). These statements were
made in regard to Miss Emily's relationship with Homer Barron. Homer himself had stated that he liked men, he was known to drink with the younger

mystery, hidden within the dusty walls of her home, controlling what the townspeople know about who Miss Emily Grierson truly is. While

strange or "perverse" of a character Emily Grierson is. The story is split into five parts which all take place throughout Emily's life. These five parts

Part three begins with the line "She was sick for a long time." This sickness represents all the years that her father had blocked men from coming
into Emily's life. Now that the sickness has passed, Emily was preparing for the sweetheart we saw in part two. This sweetheart ends up being
Homer Barron. When Homer is brought into Miss Emily's life the town finally sees her as a lady. Later in part three, between lines 200 and 210, the
people of the town mention how poor Emily is saying, "Do you suppose it is really so?" By leaving the readers in the dark, William Faulkner is
foreshadowing the murder of Homer Barron. In part four everyone thinks that "She will kill herself." (Lines 241–242) This is because of her actions in
part three when she bought rat poison without a good reason for why she was buying it. We're then told that she had he "head held high." This line
goes back to Mr. Grierson and how the Griersons are too good for the average person. Emily didn't like that fact that Homer left her because he was
into men, the egotistical personality which she got from her father is what led her to her actions in part five. The readers were misled by lines
263–264 when the townspeople assume "that they were to be married." This along with the assumption that Emily would kill herself gives the reader a

A Rose For Emily Literary Analysis
"A Rose for Emily" is a short story that begins as the town morns the loss of Miss Emily Grierson, a prominent, but illusive member of the
community. The short story goes back to tell the story of her life from being sheltered from relationships by her father, her apparent romance after her
father's death, the disappearance of her lover, and her fall into reclusiveness. The short story then comes back to the present time when it is revealed
that she had poisoned her lover and that his remains were still in an upstairs bedroom. Even more shocking is the discovery that she had slept in the
same bed as the corpse. Faulkner's central idea suggests that outside appearance is not always what it seems and observations based only on

For example, Emily Grierson is described in several ways that would suggest that she is a prominent member of the community. At the beginning
of the short story she is described as a "fallen monument" (437) and a "tradition, a duty, and a care" (437) which shows that she was respected and the
community felt some obligation to her. Later in the story she is described as "that of an idol" (439). The description of her physical appearance later in
the short story is evidence of her age and overall deterioration which is made clearer by comparing her to known objects for example "she looked
bloated, like a body long submerged in motionless water" (438) and her eyes are described as "two small pieces of coal pressed into a lump of dough"
(438). Finally, her hair is described as "pepper–and–salt iron grey" (441). All of the similes and metaphors describe someone who would be admired at
first, but then pitied as her physical appearance deteriorates. These support the central idea by allowing visualization of Emily as the other townspeople
would have seen her – a prominent person in the community who can be pitied for all of the hardships she

of Jessica . But, if the narrator decided to say " As Jessica walked into the room the vibe was uplifted because, she is always happy," That definitely
gives the story a whole different view. Depending on how thenarrator tells the story will give the reader with a different opinion because of the tone.
Though, the importance is sometimes buried away, the narrator's standpoint is the most important part of a story because, it helps provide the story

narrator provides the story with a theme, and shapes the story. By adding different elements like the setting of the story, the point of view, and
different symbols this allowed for the narrator to get across different themes successfully. The story was published in the 1930's as William

  • 1. A Rose For Emily Analysis A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner is unique, tedious, but at the same time astonishing. In Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily", the plot takes place in 1894 which promptly paints a portrait for the reader. Within this time period, women are considered to be beneath men on the strata of society. The story takes place in an era when women didn't have the right to vote, and were expected to take care of their husband and children, and any women found deviating from that social norm were frowned upon. Miss Emily is portrayed as being the co–dependent and mawkish women, as expected in accordance with the time period.Where Emily ostracizes herself from the stereotypical expectations of women is her reaction to change, including the change with the death of her father and development of society with the reconstruction of the south. In the town of Jefferson readers can see the gradual amounts of feminism, starting with the actions and comments made by the townspeople towards Miss Emily,listening to a man rather than a woman, and finally dealing with the difficulties of people saying she cannot live without a man.
