I was inspired to study and analyze what may have been going on in the minds of the characters in this story. What role did their consciences play (or
not play) in the story?
The story, City of Sorrow, is set in the sub–continent at the time of partition. During the story, there is a reference to a prior partition that makes us
think that this is a story about the partition of Bengal. However, according to the writer himself, the story reflects the time of both the first and the
second partition of the sub–continent. The story is a dialogue between three men. Three men, who have no names, whose faces have been disfigured,
and who are completely lost. They don't know where they are. They think they are dead, but don't seem to be sure. During the dialogue they tell each
other of their wrongdoings. These men have left their hometown behind after taking part in a large scale massacre, which caused devastation to the
people on whom it was inflicted, and are now in the City of Sorrow. These three men took an active part in the massacre and committed heinous war
crimes. The first man was part of a gang that forced a brother to strip his sister naked before them. Later in the story his daughter is also made victim
to a similar fate. The second man is guilty of raping a woman himself. The third man, cannot seem to remember anything about what happened to him,
except that he turned his back on his own people.

we do with this garbage?" he stopped viewing them as human but instead as cargo. Due to the huge masses of naked, whipped, frail and thin men,
women, and children filled with despair and dying around him, he started to view them as cargo. Not as humans, but as animals that were going to a
slaughter house. From then on, he had totally lost his sense of beliefs or thought of rights and wrongs, he fell into a routine of thinking of these
thousand of Jews as garbage. From then on, Franz leaves the death camp to talk about the final attacks from the allies that led to the eventual
downfall of the nazis. After this, Franz was captured by the American army and detained in Austria, but he managed to escape. The ending of this
book summarizes the after effects of the war and how it influenced his future after. Franz discussed his time in Rome with the Pope and Vatican and
eventually discusses his family's life in Brazil. However, in my opinion I no longer cared for the information after the downfall of the Nazi Campaign.
All I had learnt and the ideas that I had developed from the beginning of Franz's childhood to the end of the Holocaust was of great impact that gave me
a very different perspective into the lives of the countless other nameless soldiers like Franz. I believed the most vital part of the book was when in the
end, Franz for the first time, through his interviews with Gitta realizes that he was, in fact, as much a culprit in the murders of thousands

Human beings behave with a conscience, an innate feeling of right and wrong. The conscience prevents most people from committing horrific acts, and
those who commit such acts bear a guilty conscience. Richard starts out as the perfect Machiavellian, but as Shakespeare's historical drama Richard III
unfolds, he becomes fallible due to his conscience. Richard's Machiavellian techniques allow him to rise to the throne; the same tactics cause Richard's

It is not so much that we have a conscience, as that we are a conscience. When we describe conscience in others, we may say that they have a

You have a test in math class and your friend has the same class you, but she has it second period while you have it fifth period. Your friend takes a
picture of the test and offers to send it to you so that you can prepare for the exact questions on the test. By using the SEER method you would come
to the conclusion that this is cheating and cheating is wrong. Even though the idea of having the answers to a test and receiving a good grade is
tempting, our conscience informs us that this is clearly morally wrong. If we ignore the choice our conscience makes, then we commit a sin, and in
return we no longer have a clear moral

Freud On Conscience
Freud said the conscience is a superego. This is needed so people could live life (Boss, 2014, p.79). The view of Freud is that we are made who we are
through the world we are born in and who we are raised by. He also doesn't believe we are born already wired with one, but we learn as we age (Boss,
2014, p.79).
Autonomous moral reason directly influences our conscience. Aristotle believe in habituation as "practicing various behavior" (Boss, 2014, p.80). We
are born a certain way, but we have to look beyond what we know of our conscience.
Determinism is our conscience that is predetermined how we become. Boss says, "We are nothing more than the products of our environment or our
genetic inheritance" (Boss, 2014, p.80).

In Shakespeare's Macbeth, the theme of guilt and conscience is one of many explored throughout the play. Macbeth, is a well respected Scottish
noble who in the beginning of the play is a man everyone looks up to; however as the play progresses he makes a number of bad decisions.
Eventually, as a result of his actions he suffers guilt and this plays heavily upon his character until his personality is completely destroyed.

Macbeth's conscience is further tormented after he kills Duncan. He begins to get paranoid and hallucinates, hearing voices saying, "Sleep, Sleep
no more! For Macbeth has murdered sleep". As well as seeing the ghost of his murdered friend Banquo at the diner table, he also develops
insomnia, and goes so far on as to suggest that he is jealous of Duncan because he can sleep forever whereas he cannot sleep at all. He also loses his
appetite and can no longer eat well; this shows that his insides are turning with the memory that he himself had killed a King who had been so good
to him and to Scotland. After getting Banquo killed, Macbeth sees his ghost at the banquet with twelve bloody gashes in his head; this makes Macbeth
completely insane in an instant. He is not only scared by seeing the ghost of Banquo, but also by the thought that he had done these horrible things, and
that his soul would be haunted by his murdered friends ghost for ever. It is through the main characters of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth that this theme
of guilt and conscience is so vividly portrayed. Likewise at the beginning of the play Lady Macbeth is a very strong character, but this strength

Most people would agree that conscience is the reasoned voice inside us that guides and tells us what we should and shouldn't do. However peoples
views on the origins of conscience can differ a lot; whether people belief its Gods doing or whether it's innate or even whether it is acquired. In this
essay I will be showing the viewpoints of various philosophers with their beliefs on whether conscience is or isn't the voice of God. Ultimately I believe

It is not an instinctive feeling about what is right – instead, it is an ability to use reason to weigh up factors in a moral decision. Butler says we have a
number of influences, but the conscience should not be seen as merely one among many drives or passions. The conscience should have ultimate
authority over all of our instincts.
On the other hand, there are also beliefs that our conscience is not the voice of God – shown by the views of Sigmund Freud and Erich Fromm. Freud
believed that people were psychologically conditioned to act in a certain way, and their sense of right and wrong are not absolutes, but depend on our
life experience and our society. Freud believed that figures such as parents, religion and school impose a great influence on our decision–making than
our conscience, which is said to be the voice of God. These 'rules' influenced on us are believed to over ride the conscience that is innate. An
individual therefore leans to restrain its desires by the rules it as internalised through other types of authority, excluding God. According to Freud, a
good conscience was the result of following the rules; a guilty conscience was when instincts were followed and rules are consequently broken. These
rules can be so deeply ingrained as they have been influenced at such a young age that people may feel their conscience is the voice of God, when in
fact they have inherited these rules and guilt.
