Life Of Pi Animal Analysis
Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel, a beast fable written for adults, which has successfully portrayed animals with human feelings and motives. The
fable is told in retrospect by Piscine Molitor Patel many years after the sinking of a cargo ship with his family on his way from India to Canada. A
period of 227 days oversea of Pi in a lifeboat, in company of a hyena, an orangutan, a zebra and a Royal Bengal tiger. It is a storytelling literary fiction
created by using anthropomorphism and animal imagery. Throughout Martel's presentation in the book, each of the animals represented different
characters of various traits, individually impacting Pi's journey.
The Bengal tiger, also known as Richard Parker, represented the animal instincts and...show more content...
Finally, when the lifeboat reached the island of Mexico, the "savage Pi" is gone forever with Richard. Richard Parker's savagery influenced Pi for his
guilty acts, however, he was the motive and spirit that encouraged Pi to stay alive before being rescued.
The hyena expresses the evil and the wrong things in the world, considering its characteristics, hyena was parallel to the cook. Pi described the
hyena in negative terms, such as the hyena's "coarse coat seems to have been patched together from the leftovers of creations" (Martel, 128), and
the colour of hyena looked "liked the symptoms of a skin disease" (Martel, 128). Not only Pi wanted the readers the readers to see how unpleasing
a hyena looks, it also foreshadows its vicious actions. Both the hyena and the cook were selfish, as the hyena killed the zebra and orangutan for its
own good, similarly, the cook's savagery on the Taiwanese sailor for his own benefits. The second story was a lot harder for a reader to accept
comparing the cook's actions to hyena's killing. The hyena was included in the story to contrast Pi's divine and justice, because nobody can tolerate
evil. That being said, Pi killed the cook for his revenge, and Richard Parker killed the hyena.
Orange Juice, the orangutan, who was very protective was to be known as the Pi's Mother, Gita, in its parallel story. "It was Orange Juice,... mother of
two fine boys" (Martel, 123). The

The experiences and struggle one encounters often determines their development as a person. In society, many people face obstacles which assist
shaping them as a person. Internal struggles are a catalyst to change in ones' life. Through the use of Hamlet from William Shakespeare's play Hamlet,
and Piscine Molitor Patel from Yann Martel's novel Life of Pi, readers are able to perceive the impact internal hardships have on ones' life.
Firstly, the author Yann Martel faced internal struggle as he was passionate about writing, however, he had little money. This caused him to go to
India because the cost of living is cheaper than North America. Martel making decisions with reason allowed him to become inspired to write the

But in point of fact the explanation lies elsewhere. It is simple and brutal: a person can get used to anything, even killing" (216, Martel) As readers,
Pi killing a fish is seen as a minor struggle as Pi is simply surviving. However, to Pi, this was against his moral beliefs and he instantly prays for
forgiveness. Pi being stuck on the life boat forced him to use reason to survive which disregarded his passions temporarily.
Secondly, Hamlet from William Shakespeare's play Hamlet was passionate about seeking revenge on Claudius for his father's death. Hamlet
discarded all aspects of his life including his love of Ophelia in order to focus on his desire of his. Hamlet's passion for avenging his father's death
resulted in him killing Ophelia's father, Polonius, as he thought it was Claudius. Furthermore, whenever Hamlet gets distracted from killing Claudius,
the ghost of his father would appear to remind him of his goals and he would begin focusing on seeking revenge again. When Hamlet was given the
perfect opportunity in the chapel while Claudius was praying for forgiveness on his sins. Hamlet could not do it as he believes it would be a favor to
Claudius because him confessing his sins would send him to heaven in perfect condition and that is not revenge. This shows how passionate Hamlet is

Analysis Of The Movie ' Life Of Pi '
Fictional stories create fascinating new worlds where what we believe to be to be true doesn't apply. They go beyond the real world to tell of a tale
that applies in some way to the factual world. Hidden beneath the fiction is the truth of the factual just presented in a different way. A way that
expresses more emotions, ideas, and views than can be expressed with non–fictional truth. The film Life of Pi presents a perfect example of two stories,
one fiction and the other non–fiction. Both versions start and end in the same way, a boy lost at sea after a ship wreck survives for many days out
on sea and makes it out alive. The difference in the stories is what happened in events following the ship's sinking to his rescue. Pi, the main
character in this film, first tells the fictional story of how he survived and the events he witnessed. He talks about how he was stuck on a life boat
with an orangutan, a zebra, a Hyena, and a Tiger Named Richard Parker. At the end of the film the real version is revealed and each animal can be
replaced with a human. It turns out each animal can be seen as a symbol for each of the persons it represents. Using the fictional story helped Pi show
more about what he endured during this traumatic event then what could have been shown through the non–fictional story. Through the symbolism the
viewer is able to capture the entire event as Pi witnessed it in his mind. Although not being real fiction has a potential to reveal the truth in a better way

Life Of Pi Passage Analysis
Killing Changes People In the book, The Life of Pi by Yann Martel, Pi becomes a different person after he kills the flying fish. In the beginning of
the passage Pi shares that he is a vegetarian, and could never hurt anything living. After Pi kills the flying fish to use for bait, he says, "I wept
heartily over this poor little deceased soul" (Martel 88). This portrays the morals of Pi before he kills the flying fish. He gives life a great value and
is reluctant to interfere with the wellbeing of anything living. Later in the story, Pi kills another fish, this time a dorado. After catching the dorado, Pi
says, "killing it was no problem" (Martel 89). The attitude Pi has towards killing a fish changes drastically the second time compared to

Life Of Pi Rhetorical Analysis
Additional Comments
Life of Pi was a well written novel with an interesting story line. The authors syntax and use of metaphors make the book a great read. Of all the
books that we have read this year, Life of Pi sparked the most conversation outside of school on what the book meant, and which story was true. The
novel provides two stories. The story that the majority of the book follows has Pi stranded with Richard Parker, a hyena, an orangutan, and a zebra. At
the end of the book, Pi provides an alternate story after the men interviewing him state their disbelief of his original story. This second version equates
each animal to a human that had been aboard the Tsimtsum. The hyena was the cook aboard the ship, the orangutan was the mother,...show more

While this is almost certainly the way that it is meant to be received, the second interpretation makes the book fall just short of what it could be. My
initial interpretation is that the two stories given seems like lazy writing. The author could have spent more time fleshing out the humans. Then, later,
during Pi's adventure he could have dropped more hints that the animals represent said people. This would allow the reader to come to the conclusion
alone. Even if he did reveal the alternate story in the end, it is more satisfactory for the reader to be curious about it beforehand. There was little
evidence pointing to these minor human characters being told as animals and the result was what seems almost like a cheap twist. While the author
clearly thought out what he wanted the story to make the reader think about, he did not do it in a way that made the ending satisfying. With either
story, there are moments that seem out of place and unexplained. Although this discomfort may have been the author's goal, it did seem a little out of
place and poorly executed. Despite what the reader believes about the stories this novel is full of metaphors and symbolism that can keep a
conversation going for a long time, with

Life Of Pi by Yann Martel Essay
Pi's journey to his faith (Start with some general sentence) In Yann Martel's novel, 'Life Of Pi', the main character, Pi goes through some harsh
struggles as he manages himself to survive in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with his skills and knowledge he has. His whole life is a journey. He
learns various different skills that are used usefully in his survival. When Pi becomes an adult, he is left alone in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with a
450 pounded Bengal tiger. Although the fact that he has lost everything gives him a deep depression and makes him feel hopeless, he eventually uses
his skills that he has learned when he is young to make himself endure through his painful faith. The skills that Pi learned when he is in India...show

However, with his skills that he has learned, he is able to deal with them. At first, when Pi finds Richard Parker, Richard Parker goes aggressive to Pi,
and tries to attack him; however, he manages to use his swimming skills to temporary save himself. "(He makes a raft connected to the life boat and
swims on it to be safe from the threat, Richard Parker)" (about chapter 40 to 43). Pi is able to save himself thanks to the skills he has learned from
Mamaji. When he is greatly depressed with hopelessness, he deals with it with his religious beliefs he has gained when he is young. "(He mentions
God, and he finds the warm of flying fish. Then he is no longer hopeless, but starts to cooperate with Richard Parker)" (about chapter 42~46).
Although Pi is still lonely, he grants some courage and from this point, he actually believes that Gods do exist, and this event makes Pi to be even
more religious and he does pray more often after he gets survived. He faces Richard Parker and bravely deal with him, which is another big threat to
him. "(He
Lee 3 makes the noise that tigers do not like, and shows that he is dominant, therefore he shows Richard Parker that he is the one who has to be in
charge in the life boat)" (around chapter 45~50). This event is significant because it does not only becomes an incident for Richard Parker and Pi to

Life Of Pi Fear Analysis
How Fear and Foresight Work Together
Fear is defined as being an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief something is dangerous. Foresight on the other hand has a very different definition.
The definition for foresight is the ability to predict what will happen in the near future. Throughout Yann Martel's the novel, Life of Pi, he explores
both the ideas of fear and foresight and how they connect. Martel uses a number of different literary devices, especially symbols, to develop this
connection within Pi's character. The major symbols that Martel uses to develop these ideas are; the lifeboat and Richard Parker. These symbols play a
huge role in strengthening the interplay of fear and foresight and the purpose of this connection....show more content...
Another important part highlighting the motivation of Pi's fear is when he is truly aware of his fear and what is going on. Martel shows that Pi
has come to terms with this fear by saying "I must say a word about fear. It is life's only true opponent. Only fear can defeat life. It is a clever,
treacherous adversary, how well I know. It has no decency, respects no law or convention, shows no mercy. It goes for your weakest spot, which it
finds with unerring ease. It begins in your mind, always" (2.56.178) This passage shows Pi's awareness of his fear and suffering, as well as, that he
knows he must go through much more in order to survive.
The ability to have knowledge about future events is often crucial to one's next actions. For Pi, it is shown throughout the novel that he was always
alert and that he uses his knowledge to aid him with future events or future things that he may encounter. The biggest example of Pi's foresight
coming into play is when he meets Richard Parker. Martel uses foreshadowing in the first part to show that a seemingly random scene provides
crucial knowledge later in life. When Pi is a young boy, his father teaches him all about tigers and how to deal with them. Before this lesson he states
"I'm going to show you how dangerous tigers are...I want you to remember this lesson for the rest of your lives." (1.8.37) Prior to this, Pi's father also
says that this important lesson will save their lives. Little did Pi know,

Chapter Eleven: Pi talks about an example of just such an escape, which was when a female black leopard had run away from the Zurich Zoo in
1933 that had lived outside the zoo for ten weeks. Pi says that even exotic animals are lurking everywhere in the cities. He adds that there could
possibly be some grand animal hiding in the heart of the Mexican jungle. Chapter Sixteen: Pi is now talking about his past memories in India. He
mentions that his Auntie Rohini used to take a temple when he was a young child, and because of that, it's why he loves all religions.

Life Of Pi Literary Analysis Essay
Life of Pi: A Literary Analysis In the novel Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel, Piscine Molitor Patel is faced with a life changing tragedy. Piscine,
who is also known as Pi, had to survive 227 days on the Pacific Ocean while sharing a lifeboat with an adult Bengal tiger, when the cargo ship named
the Tsimtsum sank with his family on it. There are two stories explaining what happened while he is on the lifeboat. The version that Pi narrates first

horrid; this version replaces the beasts with Pi's mother, the cook,...show more content...
Pi tells the Japanese reporters that he killed the cook the next morning, but Pi is telling a lie. In the first story Pi comes upon a blind Frenchman
who was supposedly in another lifeboat, at the time, Pi was also blind. The blind Frenchman tells Pi that he ate a man and a woman, in the second
story, the cook ate the sailor and Pi's mother. After a long conversation, the Frenchman strangles Pi and Pi says he heard Richard Parker get up and
kill the Frenchman. Considering the second version, the blind Frenchman is the cook and he and Pi were on the lifeboat long enough to go blind
and this is when Pi actually kills the cook. After the cook killed Pi's mother, Pi knew he could not kill the cook because he admitted that the cook
was resourceful. When Pi does kill the cook, he says that he landed upon an island with freshwater ponds, an abundance of meerkats and algae. On
this island Pi regains his strength by eating a great amount of the islands algae. When night falls Pi says the island becomes carnivorous, when
thousands of dead fish start floating to the surface and all the meerkats gather in the trees. Pi then finds a set of human teeth wrapped up in the trees
and he decides that whoever landed upon the island before him must gotten digested by the tree and but their teeth did not get digested. In the second

Life of Pi Essay
In the book Life of Pi, by Yann Martel, the main character gets stranded in a lifeboat in the Pacific Ocean with only his imagination to cope with.
Piscine Molitor Patel, also known as Pi, uses a figure of his imagination to make a horrific situation better, by changing his perspective on the
entire ordeal. When Pi gets isolated with his mother, a cruel cook, and an injured sailor, Pi transforms all of them into animals out of fear, disbelief
and justification. Throughout Pi's experience, he is very fearful. He is not only afraid of all the death cruelty around him, but of himself as well. Pi
states in the book, "I was filled with a mix of rapt admiration and abject fear" (308). Pi starts becoming very fearful and troubled as soon as the...show

This was Pi's way of coping and dealing with the pain, loss, and embarrassment he faced. The story replacing humans as animals, was a way for Pi
to justify his actions. Pi stated in the book, "Then we fought and I killed him" (310), which is a confession of murder. This confession is both
really dangerous and embarrassing for Pi as he became civilized again. After Pi let his animalistic side leave, he needed a way to justify and
explain why he committed murder. By changing everyone into animals and creating Richard Parker, Pi made himself sound like he took no part in
any man slaughter. Confession of murder was also very dangerous because he could have been sentenced to jail as he was telling his traumatic tale
to the two police officers. If Pi hadn't had a way to justify the actions he was taking in the lifeboat, he wouldn't have found a way to cope and could
have let himself die. It was through his justifications that he found comfort and longing to survive, which led him to stay alive for two hundred and
twenty seven days in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Pi's story including animals included much detail, causing the reader to develop reader repor, but
in the end the more outrageous sounding story proved to be

Yann Martel's Life Of Pi: Literary Analysis
Throughout the fictional novel titled Life of Pi, by Yann Martel, the reader is prompted to question whether or not Pi's story on him surviving a
flotsam at sea for two hundred twenty seven days with a carnivorous Bengal tiger, was a real story. Towards the end of the book, Martel truly tests this
theory by having Pi narrate a completely different story which substitutes all of the animals on board with actual human beings. Life of Pi relates
directly to Martel's quote on the reality of the world, which states that "...Reality is an interpretation, a choice of readings, a choice of stories." I
would agree with his quote on reality's stance resting on what someone would choose it to be. Including Martel's Life of Pi, this interpretation is also
able to relate to an individual's personal choice in life and is also able to connect to...show more content...

because when I was a young and naive, I was influenced by my parents to believe this myth. I chose to believe the myth due to my innocence and
imaginative mind as a child. Even at first as a began to become sceptical about whether or not these myths were true, I still choose to believe them,
thus altering the reality I envision, which is an average young child's holiday spirit. I attempted for as long as possible to avoid the cold and indifferent

The journal keeps Pi from cannibalism and alleviates his loneliness but as journal entries stopped, Pi gradually began to lose his sense of humanity.
Pi's last entry in his journal, "I die" signified as the death of his humanity and "driven by the extremity of my [Pi's] need and the madness to which it
pushed me, I ate some of his flesh" (322). Due to Pi's religion, he is a vegetarian and refuses to eat meat yet to survive, he abandons humanity. Being
at sea gradually forces Pi to lose memories of his life in society. Pi admits to his "madness" when he decides to eat human flesh. From the
perspective of society, eating human flesh is judged as cannibalism and when Pi begins to accept the fact of eating human flesh, he has already
begun to lose a part of his humanity. Writing in the journal allows Pi to retain the thinking of society including its norms such as the consuming of
the same species is unjust and mentally insane. When Pi's ink starts to run out, he is unable to continue writing and that ends his last form of
connection to his previous life living on land. At this point of the novel, Pi acknowledges his decline of humanity and with it, degrades himself and
his will to live when he eats human flesh. Judging himself with the eyes of society, Pi begins to waver in his faith to survive. If Pi were able to
continue his journal, Pi would not have mentally been driven to its end forcing Pi to give

Life Of Pi Ending Essay
Have you ever read a fascinating book only to have the ending ruin everything? The ending is very important in the effectiveness of a work of
literature. An effective and appropriate ending is conclusive and answers some questions the reader might have had. It leaves the reader satisfied that
they were able to fully understand the meaning of the story. An ineffective and inappropriate ending is not very conclusive and raises further questions
that the reader might have not had before. It could contradict what had been happening throughout the whole novel. The ending of Life of Pi, written by

Life Of Pi Rhetorical Analysis
Richard Parker as an Allegorical Representation of Pi's Crisis of Faith and Humanity It is clear throughout Life of Pi that despite condemning the
anthropomorphism of animals (Martel 34), Pi, himself has a tendency to apply human characteristics to the animals he encounters throughout the story
this includes the animals living in his father's zoo that he claims to anthropomorphize to the point that they speak perfect English(cite). To keep Pi
from falling into the pitfalls of believing that animals are capable of feeling in the same way that humans are Pi's father one day shows him and his
brother how savage an animal such as a tiger can truly be. This event in and of itself is the perfect set–up for introducing Richard Parker who is a

Pi is forced to give up his compassion for all of earth's creatures and in doing so gives up part of his humanity too. The existence of Richard Parker
gives Pi a way to transfer his guilt for the acts he's committed unto another being, an animal, it's okay for Richard Parker to be savage because it is
his nature he only cares about survival, therefore, it's okay for him to commit acts that Pi would consider morally repugnant such as murdering the
blind French sailor they come upon at sea. (cite) The French sailor Pi randomly comes upon in the middle of the ocean is most likely a version of
the French sailor Pi refers to in his second telling of his survival story (cite) in this version of Pi's story he recalls brutally murdering the Frenchman
and even resorting to cannibalism. Pi himself cannot admit to committing such a heinous act because it goes against his core beliefs so he chooses to

Loss Of Innocence In Yann Martel's Life Of Pi
There is an abundance of themes and ideas which teach great life lessons within Yann Martel's Life of Pi. The theme of loss of innocence is a great
example of a theme pertaining to these circumstances. The author uses an Aha Moment to illustrate this theme during the flying fish moment. Pi
thought that Richard Parker was going to kill him, however, it turned out to be the flying fish. Though, out of necessity, Pi had to gather the fish and
kill them for food. This contradicted his entire life's beliefs. But, once Pi had killed his first fish, he was able to kill and eat other things with ease,
marking his loss of innocence. This may teach the reader that innocence has to be lost out of necessity, or else we may suffer adverse effects. Another

Earlier in the novel, Pi said that God followed love. Pi's first story was about him loving Richard Parker. Yet in his second story, there was little love
to be found. If the second story, the one with the savage butcher and cannibalism, were true, then it would be obvious why Pi tried to hide it at first, as
it is the sadder story, not the better one. So with this theme, the audience learns that imagination can create happiness in us when there was none.
Finally, the theme of man's coexistence with nature is one of the most important theme in the novel. Martel seems to illustrate this theme with an Again
and Again signpost when he has Pi describe how animals find routine to be best, then has Pi gain a routine when he is surviving on the lifeboat. He
also illustrates this theme through a Contrast and Contradiction moment when he has Richard Parker, a beast several times larger than Pi, be the one
thing that comforts Pi and basically offered to let Pi train him as shown through his prusten. With this theme, readers are taught that humans may not be
so different from wild animals, considering how we are animals in a

Life Of Pi Analysis Essay
"Life of Pi" Film Analysis Survival is an instinct. Often times, in order to survive, people must shed a part of their innocence. For some, it may be
subtle, taken in tiny bites along the way, and for others it could be in one traumatizing moment. Ang Lee, director of "The Life of Pi," explores this
theme throughout his film. Lee shows the viewer this loss in the use of imagery, lighting, and color. He takes the viewer on a journey through the eyes
of Piscine Patel as his innocence and humanity slowly get chipped away and he is forced to do what is necessary to survive and the lengths he goes to
to regain that lost innocence. The imagery of the water and its purity, or reflectivity, foreshadows events throughout the film. When innocent...show

Lee uses low–key lighting during Appa's lesson about Richard Parker. Pi, being the kind and innocent child that he is, automatically thinks the best of

gets yelled at, and Pi tells his father "Animals have souls too. I have seen it in their eyes." Appa is set on teaching him that an animal's only thought
is survival. The scene dims as a zoo worker ties a goat to Richard Parker's cage."Things changed after the day of Appa's lesson; the world had lost

In Yann Martel' Life of Pi, a young boy named Piscine Molitor Patel or Pi Patel is stranded on a lifeboat after a shipwreck. How can someone
survive 227 days, on a lifeboat, on the Pacific Ocean with a Bengal tiger? Pi is an Indian boy from Pondicherry who is faced with great difficulties
staying alive after being separated from his family following the shipwreck. His faith and belief in God greatly helped him get out of this misery.
In the following paragraphs, I will explore the themes revealed throughout the novel. Many important and interesting themes are developed in the
story. I will elaborate on faith or belief in God, survival and storytelling. All three themes have worked in conjunction to bring out this beautiful
story. The first theme I will elaborate on is faith and belief in God. Pi Patel has a profound love for God and religion, his faith is not limited to one
God and this is shown by the fact that Pi is a Hindu, Muslim, and a Christian. For him faith is light, it's anything but darkness (p.31). In fact, Pi finds
every word Mr. Kumar (the atheist) says full of faith. He sees atheists as people of faith because they believe in science. On the other hand, Pi does not
understand the agnostics, he finds it absurd to not belief and have faith in a superior power. For him, the importance is to have faith in something.
Throughout the novel, he calls out to God multiple times, when he's happy, when he's on the ship helpless, and when he survives. At the end, when he

Life Of Pi Animal Symbolism Analysis

  • 1. Life Of Pi Animal Analysis Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel, a beast fable written for adults, which has successfully portrayed animals with human feelings and motives. The fable is told in retrospect by Piscine Molitor Patel many years after the sinking of a cargo ship with his family on his way from India to Canada. A period of 227 days oversea of Pi in a lifeboat, in company of a hyena, an orangutan, a zebra and a Royal Bengal tiger. It is a storytelling literary fiction created by using anthropomorphism and animal imagery. Throughout Martel's presentation in the book, each of the animals represented different characters of various traits, individually impacting Pi's journey. The Bengal tiger, also known as Richard Parker, represented the animal instincts and...show more content... Finally, when the lifeboat reached the island of Mexico, the "savage Pi" is gone forever with Richard. Richard Parker's savagery influenced Pi for his guilty acts, however, he was the motive and spirit that encouraged Pi to stay alive before being rescued. The hyena expresses the evil and the wrong things in the world, considering its characteristics, hyena was parallel to the cook. Pi described the hyena in negative terms, such as the hyena's "coarse coat seems to have been patched together from the leftovers of creations" (Martel, 128), and the colour of hyena looked "liked the symptoms of a skin disease" (Martel, 128). Not only Pi wanted the readers the readers to see how unpleasing a hyena looks, it also foreshadows its vicious actions. Both the hyena and the cook were selfish, as the hyena killed the zebra and orangutan for its own good, similarly, the cook's savagery on the Taiwanese sailor for his own benefits. The second story was a lot harder for a reader to accept comparing the cook's actions to hyena's killing. The hyena was included in the story to contrast Pi's divine and justice, because nobody can tolerate evil. That being said, Pi killed the cook for his revenge, and Richard Parker killed the hyena. Orange Juice, the orangutan, who was very protective was to be known as the Pi's Mother, Gita, in its parallel story. "It was Orange Juice,... mother of two fine boys" (Martel, 123). • 2. Life Of Pi Character Analysis The experiences and struggle one encounters often determines their development as a person. In society, many people face obstacles which assist shaping them as a person. Internal struggles are a catalyst to change in ones' life. Through the use of Hamlet from William Shakespeare's play Hamlet, and Piscine Molitor Patel from Yann Martel's novel Life of Pi, readers are able to perceive the impact internal hardships have on ones' life. Firstly, the author Yann Martel faced internal struggle as he was passionate about writing, however, he had little money. This caused him to go to India because the cost of living is cheaper than North America. Martel making decisions with reason allowed him to become inspired to write the novel Life of Pi...show more content... But in point of fact the explanation lies elsewhere. It is simple and brutal: a person can get used to anything, even killing" (216, Martel) As readers, Pi killing a fish is seen as a minor struggle as Pi is simply surviving. However, to Pi, this was against his moral beliefs and he instantly prays for forgiveness. Pi being stuck on the life boat forced him to use reason to survive which disregarded his passions temporarily. Secondly, Hamlet from William Shakespeare's play Hamlet was passionate about seeking revenge on Claudius for his father's death. Hamlet discarded all aspects of his life including his love of Ophelia in order to focus on his desire of his. Hamlet's passion for avenging his father's death resulted in him killing Ophelia's father, Polonius, as he thought it was Claudius. Furthermore, whenever Hamlet gets distracted from killing Claudius, the ghost of his father would appear to remind him of his goals and he would begin focusing on seeking revenge again. When Hamlet was given the perfect opportunity in the chapel while Claudius was praying for forgiveness on his sins. Hamlet could not do it as he believes it would be a favor to Claudius because him confessing his sins would send him to heaven in perfect condition and that is not revenge. This shows how passionate Hamlet is Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Analysis Of The Movie ' Life Of Pi ' Fictional stories create fascinating new worlds where what we believe to be to be true doesn't apply. They go beyond the real world to tell of a tale that applies in some way to the factual world. Hidden beneath the fiction is the truth of the factual just presented in a different way. A way that expresses more emotions, ideas, and views than can be expressed with non–fictional truth. The film Life of Pi presents a perfect example of two stories, one fiction and the other non–fiction. Both versions start and end in the same way, a boy lost at sea after a ship wreck survives for many days out on sea and makes it out alive. The difference in the stories is what happened in events following the ship's sinking to his rescue. Pi, the main character in this film, first tells the fictional story of how he survived and the events he witnessed. He talks about how he was stuck on a life boat with an orangutan, a zebra, a Hyena, and a Tiger Named Richard Parker. At the end of the film the real version is revealed and each animal can be replaced with a human. It turns out each animal can be seen as a symbol for each of the persons it represents. Using the fictional story helped Pi show more about what he endured during this traumatic event then what could have been shown through the non–fictional story. Through the symbolism the viewer is able to capture the entire event as Pi witnessed it in his mind. Although not being real fiction has a potential to reveal the truth in a better way Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. The Meaning Of Life Of Pi Given the amount of depth in the film Life of Pi it provides endless thought and speculation on the meaning. Because of the open ended aspect of the film it's grown to become one of my favorable films. Although it may require some thinking and an open mind, the film is well worth watching and analyzing the meaning of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Life Of Pi Passage Analysis Killing Changes People In the book, The Life of Pi by Yann Martel, Pi becomes a different person after he kills the flying fish. In the beginning of the passage Pi shares that he is a vegetarian, and could never hurt anything living. After Pi kills the flying fish to use for bait, he says, "I wept heartily over this poor little deceased soul" (Martel 88). This portrays the morals of Pi before he kills the flying fish. He gives life a great value and is reluctant to interfere with the wellbeing of anything living. Later in the story, Pi kills another fish, this time a dorado. After catching the dorado, Pi says, "killing it was no problem" (Martel 89). The attitude Pi has towards killing a fish changes drastically the second time compared to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Life Of Pi Rhetorical Analysis Additional Comments Life of Pi was a well written novel with an interesting story line. The authors syntax and use of metaphors make the book a great read. Of all the books that we have read this year, Life of Pi sparked the most conversation outside of school on what the book meant, and which story was true. The novel provides two stories. The story that the majority of the book follows has Pi stranded with Richard Parker, a hyena, an orangutan, and a zebra. At the end of the book, Pi provides an alternate story after the men interviewing him state their disbelief of his original story. This second version equates each animal to a human that had been aboard the Tsimtsum. The hyena was the cook aboard the ship, the orangutan was the mother,...show more content... While this is almost certainly the way that it is meant to be received, the second interpretation makes the book fall just short of what it could be. My initial interpretation is that the two stories given seems like lazy writing. The author could have spent more time fleshing out the humans. Then, later, during Pi's adventure he could have dropped more hints that the animals represent said people. This would allow the reader to come to the conclusion alone. Even if he did reveal the alternate story in the end, it is more satisfactory for the reader to be curious about it beforehand. There was little evidence pointing to these minor human characters being told as animals and the result was what seems almost like a cheap twist. While the author clearly thought out what he wanted the story to make the reader think about, he did not do it in a way that made the ending satisfying. With either story, there are moments that seem out of place and unexplained. Although this discomfort may have been the author's goal, it did seem a little out of place and poorly executed. Despite what the reader believes about the stories this novel is full of metaphors and symbolism that can keep a conversation going for a long time, with Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Life Of Pi by Yann Martel Essay Pi's journey to his faith (Start with some general sentence) In Yann Martel's novel, 'Life Of Pi', the main character, Pi goes through some harsh struggles as he manages himself to survive in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with his skills and knowledge he has. His whole life is a journey. He learns various different skills that are used usefully in his survival. When Pi becomes an adult, he is left alone in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with a 450 pounded Bengal tiger. Although the fact that he has lost everything gives him a deep depression and makes him feel hopeless, he eventually uses his skills that he has learned when he is young to make himself endure through his painful faith. The skills that Pi learned when he is in India...show more content... However, with his skills that he has learned, he is able to deal with them. At first, when Pi finds Richard Parker, Richard Parker goes aggressive to Pi, and tries to attack him; however, he manages to use his swimming skills to temporary save himself. "(He makes a raft connected to the life boat and swims on it to be safe from the threat, Richard Parker)" (about chapter 40 to 43). Pi is able to save himself thanks to the skills he has learned from Mamaji. When he is greatly depressed with hopelessness, he deals with it with his religious beliefs he has gained when he is young. "(He mentions God, and he finds the warm of flying fish. Then he is no longer hopeless, but starts to cooperate with Richard Parker)" (about chapter 42~46). Although Pi is still lonely, he grants some courage and from this point, he actually believes that Gods do exist, and this event makes Pi to be even more religious and he does pray more often after he gets survived. He faces Richard Parker and bravely deal with him, which is another big threat to him. "(He Lee 3 makes the noise that tigers do not like, and shows that he is dominant, therefore he shows Richard Parker that he is the one who has to be in charge in the life boat)" (around chapter 45~50). This event is significant because it does not only becomes an incident for Richard Parker and Pi to start be friendly to each other, but also courage Pi not to be afraid of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Life Of Pi Fear Analysis How Fear and Foresight Work Together Fear is defined as being an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief something is dangerous. Foresight on the other hand has a very different definition. The definition for foresight is the ability to predict what will happen in the near future. Throughout Yann Martel's the novel, Life of Pi, he explores both the ideas of fear and foresight and how they connect. Martel uses a number of different literary devices, especially symbols, to develop this connection within Pi's character. The major symbols that Martel uses to develop these ideas are; the lifeboat and Richard Parker. These symbols play a huge role in strengthening the interplay of fear and foresight and the purpose of this connection....show more content... Another important part highlighting the motivation of Pi's fear is when he is truly aware of his fear and what is going on. Martel shows that Pi has come to terms with this fear by saying "I must say a word about fear. It is life's only true opponent. Only fear can defeat life. It is a clever, treacherous adversary, how well I know. It has no decency, respects no law or convention, shows no mercy. It goes for your weakest spot, which it finds with unerring ease. It begins in your mind, always" (2.56.178) This passage shows Pi's awareness of his fear and suffering, as well as, that he knows he must go through much more in order to survive. The ability to have knowledge about future events is often crucial to one's next actions. For Pi, it is shown throughout the novel that he was always alert and that he uses his knowledge to aid him with future events or future things that he may encounter. The biggest example of Pi's foresight coming into play is when he meets Richard Parker. Martel uses foreshadowing in the first part to show that a seemingly random scene provides crucial knowledge later in life. When Pi is a young boy, his father teaches him all about tigers and how to deal with them. Before this lesson he states "I'm going to show you how dangerous tigers are...I want you to remember this lesson for the rest of your lives." (1.8.37) Prior to this, Pi's father also says that this important lesson will save their lives. Little did Pi know, Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Life Of Pi Chapter 11 Analysis Chapter Eleven: Pi talks about an example of just such an escape, which was when a female black leopard had run away from the Zurich Zoo in 1933 that had lived outside the zoo for ten weeks. Pi says that even exotic animals are lurking everywhere in the cities. He adds that there could possibly be some grand animal hiding in the heart of the Mexican jungle. Chapter Sixteen: Pi is now talking about his past memories in India. He mentions that his Auntie Rohini used to take a temple when he was a young child, and because of that, it's why he loves all religions. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Life Of Pi Literary Analysis Essay Life of Pi: A Literary Analysis In the novel Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel, Piscine Molitor Patel is faced with a life changing tragedy. Piscine, who is also known as Pi, had to survive 227 days on the Pacific Ocean while sharing a lifeboat with an adult Bengal tiger, when the cargo ship named the Tsimtsum sank with his family on it. There are two stories explaining what happened while he is on the lifeboat. The version that Pi narrates first favors the journey with Pi, an orangutan, a tiger, a zebra, a hyena, and a carnivorous island. The second story is more realistic and definitely more horrid; this version replaces the beasts with Pi's mother, the cook,...show more content... Pi tells the Japanese reporters that he killed the cook the next morning, but Pi is telling a lie. In the first story Pi comes upon a blind Frenchman who was supposedly in another lifeboat, at the time, Pi was also blind. The blind Frenchman tells Pi that he ate a man and a woman, in the second story, the cook ate the sailor and Pi's mother. After a long conversation, the Frenchman strangles Pi and Pi says he heard Richard Parker get up and kill the Frenchman. Considering the second version, the blind Frenchman is the cook and he and Pi were on the lifeboat long enough to go blind and this is when Pi actually kills the cook. After the cook killed Pi's mother, Pi knew he could not kill the cook because he admitted that the cook was resourceful. When Pi does kill the cook, he says that he landed upon an island with freshwater ponds, an abundance of meerkats and algae. On this island Pi regains his strength by eating a great amount of the islands algae. When night falls Pi says the island becomes carnivorous, when thousands of dead fish start floating to the surface and all the meerkats gather in the trees. Pi then finds a set of human teeth wrapped up in the trees and he decides that whoever landed upon the island before him must gotten digested by the tree and but their teeth did not get digested. • 11. Life of Pi Essay In the book Life of Pi, by Yann Martel, the main character gets stranded in a lifeboat in the Pacific Ocean with only his imagination to cope with. Piscine Molitor Patel, also known as Pi, uses a figure of his imagination to make a horrific situation better, by changing his perspective on the entire ordeal. When Pi gets isolated with his mother, a cruel cook, and an injured sailor, Pi transforms all of them into animals out of fear, disbelief and justification. Throughout Pi's experience, he is very fearful. He is not only afraid of all the death cruelty around him, but of himself as well. Pi states in the book, "I was filled with a mix of rapt admiration and abject fear" (308). Pi starts becoming very fearful and troubled as soon as the...show more content... This was Pi's way of coping and dealing with the pain, loss, and embarrassment he faced. The story replacing humans as animals, was a way for Pi to justify his actions. Pi stated in the book, "Then we fought and I killed him" (310), which is a confession of murder. This confession is both really dangerous and embarrassing for Pi as he became civilized again. After Pi let his animalistic side leave, he needed a way to justify and explain why he committed murder. By changing everyone into animals and creating Richard Parker, Pi made himself sound like he took no part in any man slaughter. Confession of murder was also very dangerous because he could have been sentenced to jail as he was telling his traumatic tale to the two police officers. If Pi hadn't had a way to justify the actions he was taking in the lifeboat, he wouldn't have found a way to cope and could have let himself die. It was through his justifications that he found comfort and longing to survive, which led him to stay alive for two hundred and twenty seven days in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Pi's story including animals included much detail, causing the reader to develop reader repor, but in the end the more outrageous sounding story proved to be Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Yann Martel's Life Of Pi: Literary Analysis Throughout the fictional novel titled Life of Pi, by Yann Martel, the reader is prompted to question whether or not Pi's story on him surviving a flotsam at sea for two hundred twenty seven days with a carnivorous Bengal tiger, was a real story. Towards the end of the book, Martel truly tests this theory by having Pi narrate a completely different story which substitutes all of the animals on board with actual human beings. Life of Pi relates directly to Martel's quote on the reality of the world, which states that "...Reality is an interpretation, a choice of readings, a choice of stories." I would agree with his quote on reality's stance resting on what someone would choose it to be. Including Martel's Life of Pi, this interpretation is also able to relate to an individual's personal choice in life and is also able to connect to...show more content... During the period of childhood, most young children believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and other holiday figures or beings. Amongst these children, I was one of them. But as I became older each year, my intelligence and scepticism eventually overcame my beliefs in these holiday figures. It wasn't until I was around ten years old one Christmas to which my thoughts were confirmed as I discovered the receipts for all of the gifts supposedly brought to me by "Santa Claus". Martel's quote on reality is able to apply to my own life through the belief in holiday figures because when I was a young and naive, I was influenced by my parents to believe this myth. I chose to believe the myth due to my innocence and imaginative mind as a child. Even at first as a began to become sceptical about whether or not these myths were true, I still choose to believe them, thus altering the reality I envision, which is an average young child's holiday spirit. I attempted for as long as possible to avoid the cold and indifferent Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Life of Pi Essay Life of Pi Analytical Essay In the novel Life of Pi, Yann Martel uses the protagonist Pi to demonstrate how faith, ritual and one's will to live save one from the barbaric and carnivorous reality. Pi Patel, lover of faith and various gods and their beliefs loses his family after a shipwreck and drifts on the Pacific Ocean with a zebra, hyena, orangutan and a tiger, Richard Parker each struggling in their own way to survive. Yann Martel uses the protagonist Pi to claim that one retains his or her survival will through writing. Martel includes the fact that Pi writes, "I die" as his pen runs dry because it symbolizes the break of his daily ritual. Pi unconsciously makes a ritual for himself daily to follow in order keep himself busy...show more content... The journal keeps Pi from cannibalism and alleviates his loneliness but as journal entries stopped, Pi gradually began to lose his sense of humanity. Pi's last entry in his journal, "I die" signified as the death of his humanity and "driven by the extremity of my [Pi's] need and the madness to which it pushed me, I ate some of his flesh" (322). Due to Pi's religion, he is a vegetarian and refuses to eat meat yet to survive, he abandons humanity. Being at sea gradually forces Pi to lose memories of his life in society. Pi admits to his "madness" when he decides to eat human flesh. From the perspective of society, eating human flesh is judged as cannibalism and when Pi begins to accept the fact of eating human flesh, he has already begun to lose a part of his humanity. Writing in the journal allows Pi to retain the thinking of society including its norms such as the consuming of the same species is unjust and mentally insane. When Pi's ink starts to run out, he is unable to continue writing and that ends his last form of connection to his previous life living on land. At this point of the novel, Pi acknowledges his decline of humanity and with it, degrades himself and his will to live when he eats human flesh. Judging himself with the eyes of society, Pi begins to waver in his faith to survive. If Pi were able to continue his journal, Pi would not have mentally been driven to its end forcing Pi to give Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. Life Of Pi Ending Essay Have you ever read a fascinating book only to have the ending ruin everything? The ending is very important in the effectiveness of a work of literature. An effective and appropriate ending is conclusive and answers some questions the reader might have had. It leaves the reader satisfied that they were able to fully understand the meaning of the story. An ineffective and inappropriate ending is not very conclusive and raises further questions that the reader might have not had before. It could contradict what had been happening throughout the whole novel. The ending of Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel, is once such ending. It was ineffective in concluding the novel and made the reader wonder whether the events that the protagonists experienced...show more content... While a satisfactory ending does not require it to be conclusive in every sense and might need the reader to accept ambiguity and uncertainty, the novel still does not have a proper ending. There is simply confusion as to which of the two stories to by Pi is true. The first story in magnificent and unrealistic while the second story is brutal and realistic. It might seem obvious that the second story is what actually happened, but Pi's actions and dialogue leaves a sense of confusion. Life of Pi's ending might be appropriate to those who like being kept wondering what actually happened in reality, but to those as myself who do not, it ruins the sentiment and magnificence of the whole Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Life Of Pi Rhetorical Analysis Richard Parker as an Allegorical Representation of Pi's Crisis of Faith and Humanity It is clear throughout Life of Pi that despite condemning the anthropomorphism of animals (Martel 34), Pi, himself has a tendency to apply human characteristics to the animals he encounters throughout the story this includes the animals living in his father's zoo that he claims to anthropomorphize to the point that they speak perfect English(cite). To keep Pi from falling into the pitfalls of believing that animals are capable of feeling in the same way that humans are Pi's father one day shows him and his brother how savage an animal such as a tiger can truly be. This event in and of itself is the perfect set–up for introducing Richard Parker who is a projection...show more content... Pi is forced to give up his compassion for all of earth's creatures and in doing so gives up part of his humanity too. The existence of Richard Parker gives Pi a way to transfer his guilt for the acts he's committed unto another being, an animal, it's okay for Richard Parker to be savage because it is his nature he only cares about survival, therefore, it's okay for him to commit acts that Pi would consider morally repugnant such as murdering the blind French sailor they come upon at sea. (cite) The French sailor Pi randomly comes upon in the middle of the ocean is most likely a version of the French sailor Pi refers to in his second telling of his survival story (cite) in this version of Pi's story he recalls brutally murdering the Frenchman and even resorting to cannibalism. Pi himself cannot admit to committing such a heinous act because it goes against his core beliefs so he chooses to shift the blame to Richard Parker who is merely acting of instinct and eliminating a threat as well as providing himself with enough sustenance to continue Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Loss Of Innocence In Yann Martel's Life Of Pi There is an abundance of themes and ideas which teach great life lessons within Yann Martel's Life of Pi. The theme of loss of innocence is a great example of a theme pertaining to these circumstances. The author uses an Aha Moment to illustrate this theme during the flying fish moment. Pi thought that Richard Parker was going to kill him, however, it turned out to be the flying fish. Though, out of necessity, Pi had to gather the fish and kill them for food. This contradicted his entire life's beliefs. But, once Pi had killed his first fish, he was able to kill and eat other things with ease, marking his loss of innocence. This may teach the reader that innocence has to be lost out of necessity, or else we may suffer adverse effects. Another ...show more content... Earlier in the novel, Pi said that God followed love. Pi's first story was about him loving Richard Parker. Yet in his second story, there was little love to be found. If the second story, the one with the savage butcher and cannibalism, were true, then it would be obvious why Pi tried to hide it at first, as it is the sadder story, not the better one. So with this theme, the audience learns that imagination can create happiness in us when there was none. Finally, the theme of man's coexistence with nature is one of the most important theme in the novel. Martel seems to illustrate this theme with an Again and Again signpost when he has Pi describe how animals find routine to be best, then has Pi gain a routine when he is surviving on the lifeboat. He also illustrates this theme through a Contrast and Contradiction moment when he has Richard Parker, a beast several times larger than Pi, be the one thing that comforts Pi and basically offered to let Pi train him as shown through his prusten. With this theme, readers are taught that humans may not be so different from wild animals, considering how we are animals in a Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Life Of Pi Analysis Essay "Life of Pi" Film Analysis Survival is an instinct. Often times, in order to survive, people must shed a part of their innocence. For some, it may be subtle, taken in tiny bites along the way, and for others it could be in one traumatizing moment. Ang Lee, director of "The Life of Pi," explores this theme throughout his film. Lee shows the viewer this loss in the use of imagery, lighting, and color. He takes the viewer on a journey through the eyes of Piscine Patel as his innocence and humanity slowly get chipped away and he is forced to do what is necessary to survive and the lengths he goes to to regain that lost innocence. The imagery of the water and its purity, or reflectivity, foreshadows events throughout the film. When innocent...show more content... Lee uses low–key lighting during Appa's lesson about Richard Parker. Pi, being the kind and innocent child that he is, automatically thinks the best of everyone and everything. He almost gets his arm bitten off trying to prove this by attempting to hand–feed the bengal tiger. When Appa catches him, he gets yelled at, and Pi tells his father "Animals have souls too. I have seen it in their eyes." Appa is set on teaching him that an animal's only thought is survival. The scene dims as a zoo worker ties a goat to Richard Parker's cage."Things changed after the day of Appa's lesson; the world had lost some of its enchantment." Low lighting is used again during the storm that takes the life of Pi's family. Lee uses red flashes of light to emphasise the horror of the sinking ship. As Pi clings to the liferaft that falls into the ocean when a terrified zebra leaps to safety and breaks its leg. In this scene, Richard Parker then climbs on the raft. Out of instinct, Pi jumps off and into the choppy waters. While underwater, Pi sees the blue glow of the ship sinking to the bottom of the ocean, leaving the viewer with a sense of the heartache Pi must feel. Ang Lee uses low–key lighting and little contrast again when Pi must discuss the events of the shipwreck with the interviewers. The vivid colors and lighting effects fade away as he walks the interviewers through the identity of the zebra, the hyena, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Life Of Pi Character Analysis In Yann Martel' Life of Pi, a young boy named Piscine Molitor Patel or Pi Patel is stranded on a lifeboat after a shipwreck. How can someone survive 227 days, on a lifeboat, on the Pacific Ocean with a Bengal tiger? Pi is an Indian boy from Pondicherry who is faced with great difficulties staying alive after being separated from his family following the shipwreck. His faith and belief in God greatly helped him get out of this misery. In the following paragraphs, I will explore the themes revealed throughout the novel. Many important and interesting themes are developed in the story. I will elaborate on faith or belief in God, survival and storytelling. All three themes have worked in conjunction to bring out this beautiful story. The first theme I will elaborate on is faith and belief in God. Pi Patel has a profound love for God and religion, his faith is not limited to one God and this is shown by the fact that Pi is a Hindu, Muslim, and a Christian. For him faith is light, it's anything but darkness (p.31). In fact, Pi finds every word Mr. Kumar (the atheist) says full of faith. He sees atheists as people of faith because they believe in science. On the other hand, Pi does not understand the agnostics, he finds it absurd to not belief and have faith in a superior power. For him, the importance is to have faith in something. Throughout the novel, he calls out to God multiple times, when he's happy, when he's on the ship helpless, and when he survives. At the end, when he Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Pi has a brother named Ravi and an uncle called Francis. Pi is remarkably connected and interested in religion and zoology. Pi and his family soon move to Pondicherry in India, where they buy a zoo. The Life of Pi (Part 2) The second part of the book starts off quite dreadful. Previously in part one of Life of Pi, the family takes off from India and onto Canada. Part two begins with the words, "The ship sank". As of yet, it is not really possible to know what has happened to Pi and his family. Pi is in a lifeboat with Richard Parker, a tiger the Pi family took to Canada. Pi eventually tells the reader events right before the sinking of the ship. As the ship sails smoothly for a couple of days, a engine failure causes the ship to explode. Pi escapes onto a lifeboat, unluckily Ravi and his parents are still asleep.
