Intaking Marijuana for Medical Purposes Should be Legal for the Sick and Ill in California Marijuana has been achieving euphoria for humans since
ancient times; the use spread from China to India and then to North Africa and Europe as early as A.D. 500.Cannabis is said to contain over 400
different chemicals, the main ingredient that impinge the mind is THC. The higher the measure of THC in the hemp plant determines a higher strength
of the drug. More and more states are passing laws that allow people to use medical marijuana, and I believe California should be next. So what does it
treat, and who can and should use it? "Pain is the main reason people ask for a prescription", says Barth Wilsey, MD, a pain medicine specialist at the
University of California Davis Medical Center, "It could be used for headaches, diseases like cancer, or a long–term condition, like glaucoma or nerve
pain". Growing up, I was constantly advised that, "Drugs are bad for you and it will ruin your life," over and over again but it became more intense
as I entered high school. As a child, I didn 't understand the reasoning behind it, but I listened to my authority figure regardless assuming they knew
best. Now being an adult and having my own personal experience with the drug and knowing its effects on myself and others, I can't help but sit and
wonder why it's

Ever since marijuana's introduction to the United States of America in 1611, controversy of the use and legalization of the claimed–to–be Schedule I
drug spread around the nation. While few selective states currently allow marijuana's production and distribution, the remaining states still skepticize
the harmlessness and usefulness of this particular drug; therefore, it remains illegal in the majority of the nation. The government officials and citizens
of the opposing states believe the drug creates a threat to citizens due to its "overly–harmful" effects mentally and physically and offers no alternate
purposes but creating troublesome addicts hazardous to society; however, they are rather misinformed about marijuana's abilities. While...show more

About thirty years into the nearer future, Americans rediscovered marijuana as a result of the notorious alcohol prohibition of the 1920s when "people
looking for oblivion from their own troubles turned to a new way of getting high." Consequently and realistically, America can only blame itself for
marijuana's recreational popularity, seeing as "from 1850 to 1945, the ... plant was listed in the United States Pharmacopoeia." Almost a decade after
the alcohol prohibition ended is when marijuana was first perceived "as a dangerous, addictive, 'gateway drug'" by the United States Federal Bureau of
Narcotics. Then, "in 1970, the Controlled Substances Act was passed ... [which] classified marijuana, [alongside Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD)]
and heroin, as a Schedule I drug, meaning that [the drug] had a high risk of abuse [with] no acceptable medicinal use." Within the following decade,
"marijuana use in the United States declined," then once again escalating among youth in the nineties. Meanwhile in modern–day India, people are still
practicing marijuana medicinally, and exploring what advantages the "dangerous" drug has to offer (Chapter 2: The History of Marijuana 18–31).
Being classified as a Schedule I drug, Americans often associate marijuana with violence, psychotic

Proposal of Marijuana Legalization Essay
Marijuana has a greater beneficial impact on society then many people realize. Marijuana should be legalized for medical as well as recreational
purposes. This is a highly controversial issue that is being debated throughout the country. In essence marijuana is evaluated by the effectiveness of the
drug. It is defined as the dried flowered clusters and leaves of a hemp plant smoked for the intoxicating effect. Whether it should be legalized or not is
the real question. Many could argue that marijuana is destructive physically as well as mentally. "The National Institute on Drug Abuse says marijuana
can cause heart irregularities, lung problems, and addiction" (Welch). "One joint can be just as damaging to [the lungs] as smoking at least...show more

Both will legalize the sale, possession, and private cultivation of marijuana got personal use, while the tax act aims to put money in state coffers by
putting a levy on the sale of cannabis hemp products." California is the lead pursuer for the new ballot. "California would levy taxes that state board
says could raise $1.3 billion or more a year for the deficit–plagued state, while saving tens of millions in prison and law enforcement costs. Sponsors of
the ballot issue have tuned in 690,161 signatures on petitions for verification, far more than the 433,971 valid required to get on the ballot." "Even
the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime, in its latest World Drug Report, says people should not be incarcerated for simple possession of drugs. The
report comes close to endorsing the 'creative approach' where possession for personal use triggers administrative penalties instead of criminal
prosecution." Millions of Americans, who smoke marijuana with little negative impact on society, are threatened by a climate where the penalties for
engaging in marijuana use are too severe. "The new ballot measure would allow anyone over 21 to buy, possess, se or cultivate marijuana. It would
bar personal possession of more than one ounce as well as smoking the drug in public or around minors; [ultimately a step in the right direction]"

Legalization of Marijuana Essay
Marijuana
Marijuana is a big topic these days. Many people want to make sure that marijuana stays illegal. Yet they do not know all the facts about marijuana.
They just think that marijuana is bad. I believe that marijuana should be made legal. First of all, marijuana refers to the dried leaves and flowers of the
cannabis plant, which contain the narcotic chemical THC at various potencies.
It is smoked or eaten to produce the feeling of being "high". Marijuana has been used for thousands of years for medical, social, relaxation, and
religious reasons. Several of our presidents are believed to have smoked it. Those presidents include Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, and many others.
John F. Kennedy smoked it to relieve...show more content...
The government states that over 20 million Americans still smoke marijuana. You can say that marijuana affects your health, but marijuana is less
dangerous than tobacco and people smoke less of it at a time. Or you can eat the plant instead of smoking it, which can lower health risks by a lot.
Another way to reduce health risks is by reducing smoking amounts. There is no proof that marijuana causes health problems that can lead to death
or sexual programs, but like alcohol, it is not recommended for children or teenagers to use. This is simply because children and teenagers are in the
process of growing up, and it would not be a good idea to smoke anything or drink alcohol. Cannabis is a medical herb that has literally hundreds of
proven, valuable therapeutic uses. For example, you can use marijuana for stress reduction, asthma, cancer therapy, and much more. Marijuana is not
just for getting "high", but a valuable medical medicine. Dr. Gabriel Nahas, who made totally false statistics and studies, was very biased and
unscientific. He was even fired by the National Institute of
Health and the NIH told the public his studies were meaningless. For one experiment, he suffocated a monkey for 5 minutes at a time, using way more
smoke than the average marijuana user inhales in an entire lifetime. The other studies were lacking controls and produced results which cannot be

Marijuana is the flower of the cannabis plant, and if smoked, gives the smoker an euphoric high, but really has much more to offer than just the high.
Using marijuana and the growing of hemp are presently illegal in the United States, with the exception of medicinal uses in some states. The
legalization of marijuana has many advantages including for simple personal enjoyment, the usage of hemp and its by–products, and medicinal
purposes.
Why should marijuana be illegal when people just use it to help themselves enjoy their lives more? Tobacco and alcohol are both used, and abused for
the same reasons, but with many more negative side effects than pot. "Government's surveys indicate more than 70 million Americans have

It can also be used to make paper, where one acre will equal the amount of four acres of trees. "In addition, hemp has an average growing cycle of
only 100 days and leaves the soil virtually weed–free for the next planting" (NORML, 1). Also there is the hemp seed, which some refer to as
nature's perfect food. The oil from hemp seeds has the highest percentage of essential fatty acids and the lower percentage of saturated fats than any
food, and also is second only to soy in protein content. Steps are being made to at least legalize the use of hemp, for there are really no disadvantages
in growing it. "In 1996, politicians in four states introduced legislation allowing for domestic hemp cultivation and by legislative session's end,
both Hawaii and Vermont had passed measures promoting industrial hemp research." (NORML, 1).
Marijuana is now legal for medicinal purposes due to Proposition 215 in California, and Proposition 200 in Arizona. Also, the House has introduced
bill 912, "The medical use of marijuana act." People with specified physical pains such as headaches, arthritis, and

Essay Legalize Weed: Yes or No?
Since before the 1900's, the United States has been battling with a seemingly unending debate. Should marijuana, otherwise known as 'weed', be
legalized in the states? While most politicians say that legalizing marijuana would only be used as a 'stepping–stone' to more dangerous drugs like
heroin or cocaine, it is my opinion to strongly disagree with this statement. Marijuana use can have medical pluses, yielding California's decision to
legalize marijuana for healing purposes. With the right regulations, marijuana should be fully legalized in the United States.
Marijuana's purpose is served to most as one of life's pleasures. In most cases it causes temporary memory loss, loss of bodily motor skills, slurred
speech, sleepiness, altered...show more content...
Though all of these factors must be considered, one must also think about the reasons why legal weed could improve the quality of life. For various
sicknesses, weed can act like morphine in dulling out reality and 'Zenning' a patient out until they reach a certain numbness. In TIME magazine,
Andrew Ferguson states that "marijuana is addictive for 10% of regular users–making it less addictive than alcohol (15%) and much less addictive than
cigarettes (32%), which are, they point out, perfectly legal." The main problem the government has with marijuana is the fact that the side effects
directly hinder normal functioning, preventing people to make logical decisions and suffering from impaired judgment. However, does alcohol not
do the same thing? Alcohol is 5% more addictive than marijuana and most vehicle accidents are directly involved with them. It's all about the
responsibility of the smoker. If the feds are worried about the misuse of the drug they could set aside specific places where the drug could be
smoked and have people test their ability to function normally before they go out driving or leave the area. This would also decrease the number of
drug dealers illegally dealing because citizens could easier get it from the government. This could help lower prices and at the same time lower crime
rates from people not stealing it or trying to commit a crime to get the money to buy the weed. Instead

Persuasive Essay On Legalize Marijuana
Legalize Marijuana Marijuana is a drug that is spreading all around the world and is now proven to be the most beneficial drug out there. More
than 25 million Americans annually use it each year. If the country legalized it then everyone would have more jobs available to go around such
as harvesters, dispensary clerks, distributors, or croppers. Thus, the unemployment rate is lowered and America could make more money if they
taxed it (Jack). Not only could they tax it but also save more money because they would not have to lock up those people getting arrested every
year. That way America could lower the country's debt and then there is a lot less people in prisons. It would save the country billions of dollars
each year and make billions more each year. This country needs to tax anything they can because taxing marijuana would bring in so much more
revenue and America could also trade with other countries. Marijuana has also proved to help cure diseases such as glaucoma, Alzheimer's, and other
cancer diseases. It is proven that it can help alleviate pain, regain their appetite, help in slowing down tumor growth, help with dizziness, and help a
patient go to sleep. THC, which is the main ingredient in marijuana, helps a cancer patient to gain back their sense of smell and taste so that person
can regain their appetite. Medical Marijuana (oil) helps the dizziness by stopping their vomiting and keeping their food down and gain weight.

The following offers an analysis of both sides of this subject as well as an analysis of how this issue affects Brazilian society. Cannabis legalization
is a subject of strong debate in the United States. Marijuana use for medical, industrial, and recreational purposes has existed for thousands of years
in many countries worldwide and is documented as far back as 2700 BC (Time Magazine, April 2009; Why Legalizing Marijuana Makes Sense).
Marijuana should be legalized for several reasons. The government could save money and earn additional revenue from taxes on its sale. Tobacco
sales generate strong sources of Federal revenue because of taxation. As a popular and well–marketed product, the sales taxes would amass a savings
that could be allotted toward promoting infrastructures, public education and other public utilities for the general welfare of citizens. As a cash crop,
like corn, wheat, or alfalfa, marijuana futures could also be bought and traded by investors. Tobacco futures have been a consistently strong way of
bolstering and diversifying a discriminating investor's portfolio. The increase in futures investment would help American farmers build much–needed
revenues that would allow agrarian operations to expand and become more sophisticated. In the United States,

If Marijuana Were To Be Legal Drugs are a major influential force in our country today. The problem has gotten so out of hand that many options are
being considered to control it or even solve it. Ending the drug war seems to be a bit impossible. The war on drugs seems to be accomplishing a lot
but this is not true. Different options need to be considered. Legalization is an option that hasn't gotten a chance but should be given one. Although
many people feel that legalizing marijuana would increase the amount of use, marijuana should be legalized because it will reduce the great amounts
of money spent on enforcement and it will increase our country's revenue. There are also many benefits that can be uncovered to help people if...show

In return, the companies that make the cigarettes would also pay income taxes.. Second, there would be a reduction on the amount spent on law
enforcement efforts to apprehend and prosecute users and sellers of marijuana. The drug enforcement authorities might reduce their budget requests, or,
more likely, focus more intensely on hard drugs and violent crimes. The courts would be relieved of hearing some drug cases, as well. The most
important gain would be in the quality of government. The sorts of temptations and opportunities that lead to corruption would be significantly
minimized. The illogical pattern of law enforcement, which now treats marijuana as more dangerous as alcohol, would end. It would set more
achievable goals for law enforcement, and this would lend strength and credibility to the government. In the essay "drugs," Vidal states, "It is possible
to stop most drug addiction in the United States within a very short time, Simply make all drugs

Legalizing Marijuana Essay
What exactly is marijuana? Marijuana, also known as pot or hemp, is a naturally grown substance that contains THC. THC changes how the brain
works and gives the user a high that relieves many different pains and even helps erase bad memories. The hemp plant can be found in just about
any place, but has to be kept in heat. Marijuana is from a naturally grown plant so why not be able to use it legally? Well, there are many reasons
against the legalization of marijuana and there are also many very good reasons to legalize it for medical and recreational use. So to the government
and everyone against legalizing marijuana, too bad! It's natural and people are going to smoke no matter what the laws are, so why not just make it

"In strict medical terms, marijuana is far safer than many foods we commonly consume. For example, eating ten raw potatoes can result in a toxic
response...It is physically impossible to eat enough marijuana to induce death."(Young, Francis 1) Obviously if alcohol and cigarettes can be sold,
marijuana can be too.
A massive number of people who smoke marijuana would be willing to pay just to smoke, resulting in making profit. "The number of people globally
who had used cannabis in 2008 is estimated between 129 and 191 million, or 2.9 percent to 4.3 percent of the world's population ages fifteen to
sixty–four."(World Drug Report 9) Pot smokers are willing to pay to smoke while the drug is illegal, so they would pay to smoke if it was legal too.
All of the people who would pay to smoke marijuana would result in a huge profit which would benefit our government and country. Now think about
some other reasons that marijuana should be legal. One of the big reasons it should be legalized is for the people who use it medically.
The people who are terminally ill or have a serious illness have so much trouble getting what they want and need just to feel good and live life the way
they want without all their pain. If marijuana was legal, these people wouldn't have to go through tests and stages just to get a natural drug that

Cannabis sativa or Marijuana as is commonly known worldwide is a hard drug with adverse side effects to the users. With this reason it is an
illegal drug in a majority of parts in the world. However according to research statistics, with this illegality there is still a high rise of both users as
well as those initiated into the practice annually with the United Nations placing it first among the illicit substances widely used in the world

It is also widely used for medicinal purposes as prevention for nausea and vomiting and hunger stimulation in patients undergoing chemotherapy and
those suffering from AIDs among others. Its long term effects on the other hand include a change in brain operation and disruptions in fertility.
Numerous articles have thus been written with the debate whether the use of marijuana should be made legal or not.
Most laws have therefore been put in place to prevent the planting, possession and transfer of Marijuana in relation to these and more effects of the
drug. However, laws in some countries have been reviewed with regards to the possession of low amounts of Marijuana. Although this is a great
step, it still does not provide a full solution in reducing excess consumption of the drug. This is because most young people who indulge in excessive
use of the drug do so as an experiment to get the good feeling of being on the other side of the law. To prevent this, it would be appropriate to legalize
the use of the drug without restrictions. This would result in the moderate use if not the total abandonment of the drug when not necessary.
There are numbers of instances when the drug use is fully permitted and protected by the law such as in its use for medicinal purposes in the
treatment of severe chronic pain. This group of people is allowed to grow their own cannabis, employ someone else to do it for them or form groups

Should We Legalize Marijuana? Essay
Drugs, we all have come across some type of drug in our lives whether it's legal or not. There is a massive amount of drugs being used daily for
medical reasons, some being used to treat multiple conditions at once. Though drugs play an important role in the medical field today and are being
prescribed more and more by doctors, there are those consumers that abuse the use of these drugs. That brings into question if the legalization of
certain drugs should be considered or if it is best to keep them illegal. One of the main drugs in debate now and the topic I conducted my research on
is Marijuana. The United States is now in debate on the legalization of cannabis, and much of America is now for legalizing the drug. My top concern

After reading more about marijuana, tertrahydrocannabinol or THC was revealed as the compound responsible for getting users high. THC has
many effects such as "relaxation, alteration of visual, auditory, and olfactory senses, fatigue, and appetite stimulation" (Wikipedia,
"Tetrahydrocannabinol.") while also treating pain. While studying THC, my main wonder was how much of it was present in marijuana. I learned
that THC is actually reduced in marijuana when prepared for medical use. I also learned that marijuana itself has many forms for consumption such
as resin and oil, some forms having higher amounts of THC than others. After I learned much about the drug, I wondered what effects it has in our
daily lives. I came across a web article "Marijuana Use and Its Effects" that shared many results of consuming the drug on a physiological and
psychological level. The article states that on a physiological level the consumption of marijuana can cause", rapid heart rate, increased blood pressure,
increased rate of breathing, red eyes, dry mouth, increased appetite, or 'the munchies', and slowed reaction time" (Joseph) some of these effects being
more familiar than others. Some psychological risks, according to the article, are paranoia, short term memory loss, anxiety, depression, and a distorted
sense of time. Though some of these risks can seem harmful, many believe that marijuana is safer than alcohol. While interested in

the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people." saying their is nothing in the
constitution saying weed cannot be legalized. To start off, many people think weed should not be legal. One reason some may say it is not safe to
legalize weed is public safety. "Marijuana use, like the use of alcohol, can cause impairment in the user. This means if a person is driving whilst

Marijuana can harm a person's heart as well. Using marijuana can cause an alteration of heart rate, cause intense anxiety, panic attacks or paranoia

downfall to smoking marijuana is it contains almost 50% more benzopyrene (the cancer–causing chemical in tobacco) than a cigarette (Fact Sheet).
Marijuana contains cancer causing agents and toxic particles that can lead to bronchitis, emphysema, and lung cancer (What to Teach Kids 3). People

five joints per week may be taking in as many cancer–causing chemicals as someone who smokes a full pack of cigarettes every day (Marijuana). The
affects of smoking marijuana are much severe than smoking cigarettes. What about the immune system? People who smoke marijuana are more

that people can easily "abuse" this drug when in reality they don't need it for anything besides to get high. Marijuana can be used for wrong reasons,
but it has NEVER killed anyone while being abused. Also, marijuana could resort in becoming a gateway drug when used far too often and begin

Agencies could be made to regulate and distribute the drug, which in turn would create more jobs. It could help boost the economy because of
such high demand. Also, there would be jobs for farmers to grow the product and then in turn sell to other countries such as the Netherlands. It
also does not cost a lot to grow and take care of meaning the prices would be stable. The police could also divert their resources to other things such
as bigger crimes like murder, theft and others. The theft rate would also go down because drug dealers would not need to steal from each other.
Marijuana not being legalized is also a form of intruding on every individual's personal freedom. America is a country that others look at as having
the most freedom. Marijuana cannot harm others and I believe it is up to an individual as to what they do with their body. Personal freedom is also
intruded on by keeping marijuana illegal. "You can't legislate morality when people disagree about what's considered "moral"." Even if the drug is

To produce different plants, genetic cross–breeding is performed, as well as using different techniques for growing the plant. The main psychoactive
ingredient in marijuana, which is also the most responsible for its intoxicating effects, is known as delta–9–tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. THC is one
of the cannabinoids found in marijuana, and there are over sixty of them. It is the cannabinoid that produces the high, and although there are other
cannabinoids present, the effect is different with the absence of THC. They interact with THC to affect its impact in a variety of ways: enhancing or
attenuating it, speeding up or slowing down its onset, and influencing how long the effect lasts (Caulkin 7). According to the authors, recent studies
have shown that there is another compound in marijuana that is increasing the attention of both scientists and medical marijuana providers known as
cannabidiol, or CBD. CBD is not an intoxicating product, and does not produce a high when alone, but some researchers claim it may calm the
anxiety produced by THC. Some research suggests that marijuana with a better balance between CBD and THC is less risky than the high–THC,
low–CBD strains that now dominate the upper end of the marijuana market (Caulkin 9). With scientists discovering the new compound CBD, it makes
them more interested in doing further research in order to discover more roles of other compounds

How To Legalize California

  • 1. How To Legalize California Running Head: Legalize Marijuana Pro–Legalization of Marijuana in California Mirna Abujudeh CSUSB Mary Dolan PSYCH 105 T/R Intaking Marijuana for Medical Purposes Should be Legal for the Sick and Ill in California Marijuana has been achieving euphoria for humans since ancient times; the use spread from China to India and then to North Africa and Europe as early as A.D. 500.Cannabis is said to contain over 400 different chemicals, the main ingredient that impinge the mind is THC. The higher the measure of THC in the hemp plant determines a higher strength of the drug. More and more states are passing laws that allow people to use medical marijuana, and I believe California should be next. So what does it treat, and who can and should use it? "Pain is the main reason people ask for a prescription", says Barth Wilsey, MD, a pain medicine specialist at the University of California Davis Medical Center, "It could be used for headaches, diseases like cancer, or a long–term condition, like glaucoma or nerve pain". Growing up, I was constantly advised that, "Drugs are bad for you and it will ruin your life," over and over again but it became more intense as I entered high school. As a child, I didn 't understand the reasoning behind it, but I listened to my authority figure regardless assuming they knew best. Now being an adult and having my own personal experience with the drug and knowing its effects on myself and others, I can't help but sit and wonder why it's Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Ever since marijuana's introduction to the United States of America in 1611, controversy of the use and legalization of the claimed–to–be Schedule I drug spread around the nation. While few selective states currently allow marijuana's production and distribution, the remaining states still skepticize the harmlessness and usefulness of this particular drug; therefore, it remains illegal in the majority of the nation. The government officials and citizens of the opposing states believe the drug creates a threat to citizens due to its "overly–harmful" effects mentally and physically and offers no alternate purposes but creating troublesome addicts hazardous to society; however, they are rather misinformed about marijuana's abilities. While...show more content... About thirty years into the nearer future, Americans rediscovered marijuana as a result of the notorious alcohol prohibition of the 1920s when "people looking for oblivion from their own troubles turned to a new way of getting high." Consequently and realistically, America can only blame itself for marijuana's recreational popularity, seeing as "from 1850 to 1945, the ... plant was listed in the United States Pharmacopoeia." Almost a decade after the alcohol prohibition ended is when marijuana was first perceived "as a dangerous, addictive, 'gateway drug'" by the United States Federal Bureau of Narcotics. Then, "in 1970, the Controlled Substances Act was passed ... [which] classified marijuana, [alongside Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD)] and heroin, as a Schedule I drug, meaning that [the drug] had a high risk of abuse [with] no acceptable medicinal use." Within the following decade, "marijuana use in the United States declined," then once again escalating among youth in the nineties. Meanwhile in modern–day India, people are still practicing marijuana medicinally, and exploring what advantages the "dangerous" drug has to offer (Chapter 2: The History of Marijuana 18–31). Being classified as a Schedule I drug, Americans often associate marijuana with violence, psychotic Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Proposal of Marijuana Legalization Essay Marijuana has a greater beneficial impact on society then many people realize. Marijuana should be legalized for medical as well as recreational purposes. This is a highly controversial issue that is being debated throughout the country. In essence marijuana is evaluated by the effectiveness of the drug. It is defined as the dried flowered clusters and leaves of a hemp plant smoked for the intoxicating effect. Whether it should be legalized or not is the real question. Many could argue that marijuana is destructive physically as well as mentally. "The National Institute on Drug Abuse says marijuana can cause heart irregularities, lung problems, and addiction" (Welch). "One joint can be just as damaging to [the lungs] as smoking at least...show more content... Both will legalize the sale, possession, and private cultivation of marijuana got personal use, while the tax act aims to put money in state coffers by putting a levy on the sale of cannabis hemp products." California is the lead pursuer for the new ballot. "California would levy taxes that state board says could raise $1.3 billion or more a year for the deficit–plagued state, while saving tens of millions in prison and law enforcement costs. Sponsors of the ballot issue have tuned in 690,161 signatures on petitions for verification, far more than the 433,971 valid required to get on the ballot." "Even the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime, in its latest World Drug Report, says people should not be incarcerated for simple possession of drugs. The report comes close to endorsing the 'creative approach' where possession for personal use triggers administrative penalties instead of criminal prosecution." Millions of Americans, who smoke marijuana with little negative impact on society, are threatened by a climate where the penalties for engaging in marijuana use are too severe. "The new ballot measure would allow anyone over 21 to buy, possess, se or cultivate marijuana. It would bar personal possession of more than one ounce as well as smoking the drug in public or around minors; [ultimately a step in the right direction]" (McKinley). A policy that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Legalization of Marijuana Essay Marijuana Marijuana is a big topic these days. Many people want to make sure that marijuana stays illegal. Yet they do not know all the facts about marijuana. They just think that marijuana is bad. I believe that marijuana should be made legal. First of all, marijuana refers to the dried leaves and flowers of the cannabis plant, which contain the narcotic chemical THC at various potencies. It is smoked or eaten to produce the feeling of being "high". Marijuana has been used for thousands of years for medical, social, relaxation, and religious reasons. Several of our presidents are believed to have smoked it. Those presidents include Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, and many others. John F. Kennedy smoked it to relieve...show more content... The government states that over 20 million Americans still smoke marijuana. You can say that marijuana affects your health, but marijuana is less dangerous than tobacco and people smoke less of it at a time. Or you can eat the plant instead of smoking it, which can lower health risks by a lot. Another way to reduce health risks is by reducing smoking amounts. There is no proof that marijuana causes health problems that can lead to death or sexual programs, but like alcohol, it is not recommended for children or teenagers to use. This is simply because children and teenagers are in the process of growing up, and it would not be a good idea to smoke anything or drink alcohol. Cannabis is a medical herb that has literally hundreds of proven, valuable therapeutic uses. For example, you can use marijuana for stress reduction, asthma, cancer therapy, and much more. Marijuana is not just for getting "high", but a valuable medical medicine. Dr. Gabriel Nahas, who made totally false statistics and studies, was very biased and unscientific. He was even fired by the National Institute of Health and the NIH told the public his studies were meaningless. For one experiment, he suffocated a monkey for 5 minutes at a time, using way more smoke than the average marijuana user inhales in an entire lifetime. The other studies were lacking controls and produced results which cannot be Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Legalize The Weed Essay Marijuana is the flower of the cannabis plant, and if smoked, gives the smoker an euphoric high, but really has much more to offer than just the high. Using marijuana and the growing of hemp are presently illegal in the United States, with the exception of medicinal uses in some states. The legalization of marijuana has many advantages including for simple personal enjoyment, the usage of hemp and its by–products, and medicinal purposes. Why should marijuana be illegal when people just use it to help themselves enjoy their lives more? Tobacco and alcohol are both used, and abused for the same reasons, but with many more negative side effects than pot. "Government's surveys indicate more than 70 million Americans have smoked...show more content... It can also be used to make paper, where one acre will equal the amount of four acres of trees. "In addition, hemp has an average growing cycle of only 100 days and leaves the soil virtually weed–free for the next planting" (NORML, 1). Also there is the hemp seed, which some refer to as nature's perfect food. The oil from hemp seeds has the highest percentage of essential fatty acids and the lower percentage of saturated fats than any food, and also is second only to soy in protein content. Steps are being made to at least legalize the use of hemp, for there are really no disadvantages in growing it. "In 1996, politicians in four states introduced legislation allowing for domestic hemp cultivation and by legislative session's end, both Hawaii and Vermont had passed measures promoting industrial hemp research." (NORML, 1). Marijuana is now legal for medicinal purposes due to Proposition 215 in California, and Proposition 200 in Arizona. Also, the House has introduced bill 912, "The medical use of marijuana act." People with specified physical pains such as headaches, arthritis, and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Essay Legalize Weed: Yes or No? Since before the 1900's, the United States has been battling with a seemingly unending debate. Should marijuana, otherwise known as 'weed', be legalized in the states? While most politicians say that legalizing marijuana would only be used as a 'stepping–stone' to more dangerous drugs like heroin or cocaine, it is my opinion to strongly disagree with this statement. Marijuana use can have medical pluses, yielding California's decision to legalize marijuana for healing purposes. With the right regulations, marijuana should be fully legalized in the United States. Marijuana's purpose is served to most as one of life's pleasures. In most cases it causes temporary memory loss, loss of bodily motor skills, slurred speech, sleepiness, altered...show more content... Though all of these factors must be considered, one must also think about the reasons why legal weed could improve the quality of life. For various sicknesses, weed can act like morphine in dulling out reality and 'Zenning' a patient out until they reach a certain numbness. In TIME magazine, Andrew Ferguson states that "marijuana is addictive for 10% of regular users–making it less addictive than alcohol (15%) and much less addictive than cigarettes (32%), which are, they point out, perfectly legal." The main problem the government has with marijuana is the fact that the side effects directly hinder normal functioning, preventing people to make logical decisions and suffering from impaired judgment. However, does alcohol not do the same thing? Alcohol is 5% more addictive than marijuana and most vehicle accidents are directly involved with them. It's all about the responsibility of the smoker. If the feds are worried about the misuse of the drug they could set aside specific places where the drug could be smoked and have people test their ability to function normally before they go out driving or leave the area. This would also decrease the number of drug dealers illegally dealing because citizens could easier get it from the government. This could help lower prices and at the same time lower crime rates from people not stealing it or trying to commit a crime to get the money to buy the weed. • 7. Persuasive Essay On Legalize Marijuana Legalize Marijuana Marijuana is a drug that is spreading all around the world and is now proven to be the most beneficial drug out there. More than 25 million Americans annually use it each year. If the country legalized it then everyone would have more jobs available to go around such as harvesters, dispensary clerks, distributors, or croppers. Thus, the unemployment rate is lowered and America could make more money if they taxed it (Jack). Not only could they tax it but also save more money because they would not have to lock up those people getting arrested every year. That way America could lower the country's debt and then there is a lot less people in prisons. It would save the country billions of dollars each year and make billions more each year. This country needs to tax anything they can because taxing marijuana would bring in so much more revenue and America could also trade with other countries. Marijuana has also proved to help cure diseases such as glaucoma, Alzheimer's, and other cancer diseases. It is proven that it can help alleviate pain, regain their appetite, help in slowing down tumor growth, help with dizziness, and help a patient go to sleep. THC, which is the main ingredient in marijuana, helps a cancer patient to gain back their sense of smell and taste so that person can regain their appetite. Medical Marijuana (oil) helps the dizziness by stopping their vomiting and keeping their food down and gain weight. Medicinal Marijuana has proved to help Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Legalize Marijuana Essay examples Cannabis is a plant that has been used for many purposes during many centuries of its cultivation. Cannabis grows wild in many parts of the world, such as in India and even in parts of the United States, where it is referred to as "ditch weed". Cannabis seed oils can be used as a nutritional supplement or as a component of soaps and detergents. Hemp fibers can be used in the construction of textile ropes. Cannabis' most famous and infamous use is for the psychoactive substance, THC, which can produce an altered state of consciousness, mild hallucinations, and other neurological and behavioral effects. These effects are revered by some members of the community and loathed by others, who perceive it as a dangerous and unhealthy state of...show more content... The following offers an analysis of both sides of this subject as well as an analysis of how this issue affects Brazilian society. Cannabis legalization is a subject of strong debate in the United States. Marijuana use for medical, industrial, and recreational purposes has existed for thousands of years in many countries worldwide and is documented as far back as 2700 BC (Time Magazine, April 2009; Why Legalizing Marijuana Makes Sense). Marijuana should be legalized for several reasons. The government could save money and earn additional revenue from taxes on its sale. Tobacco sales generate strong sources of Federal revenue because of taxation. As a popular and well–marketed product, the sales taxes would amass a savings that could be allotted toward promoting infrastructures, public education and other public utilities for the general welfare of citizens. As a cash crop, like corn, wheat, or alfalfa, marijuana futures could also be bought and traded by investors. Tobacco futures have been a consistently strong way of bolstering and diversifying a discriminating investor's portfolio. The increase in futures investment would help American farmers build much–needed revenues that would allow agrarian operations to expand and become more sophisticated. • 9. Legalize Marijuana If Marijuana Were To Be Legal Drugs are a major influential force in our country today. The problem has gotten so out of hand that many options are being considered to control it or even solve it. Ending the drug war seems to be a bit impossible. The war on drugs seems to be accomplishing a lot but this is not true. Different options need to be considered. Legalization is an option that hasn't gotten a chance but should be given one. Although many people feel that legalizing marijuana would increase the amount of use, marijuana should be legalized because it will reduce the great amounts of money spent on enforcement and it will increase our country's revenue. There are also many benefits that can be uncovered to help people if...show more content... In return, the companies that make the cigarettes would also pay income taxes.. Second, there would be a reduction on the amount spent on law enforcement efforts to apprehend and prosecute users and sellers of marijuana. The drug enforcement authorities might reduce their budget requests, or, more likely, focus more intensely on hard drugs and violent crimes. The courts would be relieved of hearing some drug cases, as well. The most important gain would be in the quality of government. The sorts of temptations and opportunities that lead to corruption would be significantly minimized. The illogical pattern of law enforcement, which now treats marijuana as more dangerous as alcohol, would end. It would set more achievable goals for law enforcement, and this would lend strength and credibility to the government. In the essay "drugs," Vidal states, "It is possible to stop most drug addiction in the United States within a very short time, Simply make all drugs Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Legalizing Marijuana Essay What exactly is marijuana? Marijuana, also known as pot or hemp, is a naturally grown substance that contains THC. THC changes how the brain works and gives the user a high that relieves many different pains and even helps erase bad memories. The hemp plant can be found in just about any place, but has to be kept in heat. Marijuana is from a naturally grown plant so why not be able to use it legally? Well, there are many reasons against the legalization of marijuana and there are also many very good reasons to legalize it for medical and recreational use. So to the government and everyone against legalizing marijuana, too bad! It's natural and people are going to smoke no matter what the laws are, so why not just make it legal? Making the...show more content... "In strict medical terms, marijuana is far safer than many foods we commonly consume. For example, eating ten raw potatoes can result in a toxic response...It is physically impossible to eat enough marijuana to induce death."(Young, Francis 1) Obviously if alcohol and cigarettes can be sold, marijuana can be too. A massive number of people who smoke marijuana would be willing to pay just to smoke, resulting in making profit. "The number of people globally who had used cannabis in 2008 is estimated between 129 and 191 million, or 2.9 percent to 4.3 percent of the world's population ages fifteen to sixty–four."(World Drug Report 9) Pot smokers are willing to pay to smoke while the drug is illegal, so they would pay to smoke if it was legal too. All of the people who would pay to smoke marijuana would result in a huge profit which would benefit our government and country. Now think about some other reasons that marijuana should be legal. One of the big reasons it should be legalized is for the people who use it medically. The people who are terminally ill or have a serious illness have so much trouble getting what they want and need just to feel good and live life the way they want without all their pain. If marijuana was legal, these people wouldn't have to go through tests and stages just to get a natural drug that Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. Legalize Marijuana Essay Cannabis sativa or Marijuana as is commonly known worldwide is a hard drug with adverse side effects to the users. With this reason it is an illegal drug in a majority of parts in the world. However according to research statistics, with this illegality there is still a high rise of both users as well as those initiated into the practice annually with the United Nations placing it first among the illicit substances widely used in the world (UNODC 198). Having worked previously in a number of facilities for juvenile delinquency and correction in California I observed and participated in the numerous ways, methods and tactics employed by the government to reduce the use of cannabis sativa with little success. Instead, the number of crimes...show more content... It is also widely used for medicinal purposes as prevention for nausea and vomiting and hunger stimulation in patients undergoing chemotherapy and those suffering from AIDs among others. Its long term effects on the other hand include a change in brain operation and disruptions in fertility. Numerous articles have thus been written with the debate whether the use of marijuana should be made legal or not. Most laws have therefore been put in place to prevent the planting, possession and transfer of Marijuana in relation to these and more effects of the drug. However, laws in some countries have been reviewed with regards to the possession of low amounts of Marijuana. Although this is a great step, it still does not provide a full solution in reducing excess consumption of the drug. This is because most young people who indulge in excessive use of the drug do so as an experiment to get the good feeling of being on the other side of the law. To prevent this, it would be appropriate to legalize the use of the drug without restrictions. This would result in the moderate use if not the total abandonment of the drug when not necessary. There are numbers of instances when the drug use is fully permitted and protected by the law such as in its use for medicinal purposes in the treatment of severe chronic pain. This group of people is allowed to grow their own cannabis, employ someone else to do it for them or form groups where they Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Should We Legalize Marijuana? Essay Drugs, we all have come across some type of drug in our lives whether it's legal or not. There is a massive amount of drugs being used daily for medical reasons, some being used to treat multiple conditions at once. Though drugs play an important role in the medical field today and are being prescribed more and more by doctors, there are those consumers that abuse the use of these drugs. That brings into question if the legalization of certain drugs should be considered or if it is best to keep them illegal. One of the main drugs in debate now and the topic I conducted my research on is Marijuana. The United States is now in debate on the legalization of cannabis, and much of America is now for legalizing the drug. My top concern is how...show more content... After reading more about marijuana, tertrahydrocannabinol or THC was revealed as the compound responsible for getting users high. THC has many effects such as "relaxation, alteration of visual, auditory, and olfactory senses, fatigue, and appetite stimulation" (Wikipedia, "Tetrahydrocannabinol.") while also treating pain. While studying THC, my main wonder was how much of it was present in marijuana. I learned that THC is actually reduced in marijuana when prepared for medical use. I also learned that marijuana itself has many forms for consumption such as resin and oil, some forms having higher amounts of THC than others. After I learned much about the drug, I wondered what effects it has in our daily lives. I came across a web article "Marijuana Use and Its Effects" that shared many results of consuming the drug on a physiological and psychological level. The article states that on a physiological level the consumption of marijuana can cause", rapid heart rate, increased blood pressure, increased rate of breathing, red eyes, dry mouth, increased appetite, or 'the munchies', and slowed reaction time" (Joseph) some of these effects being more familiar than others. Some psychological risks, according to the article, are paranoia, short term memory loss, anxiety, depression, and a distorted sense of time. Though some of these risks can seem harmful, many believe that marijuana is safer than alcohol. While interested in Get more content on HelpWriting.net

People do not realize how much more serious the risks of smoking one joint are compared to smoking one cigarette. Studies show that someone who smokes five joints per week may be taking in as many cancer–causing chemicals as someone who smokes a full pack of cigarettes every day (Marijuana). The affects of smoking marijuana are much severe than smoking cigarettes. What about the immune system? People who smoke marijuana are more susceptible to getting sick because their bodies are not as healthy. I do understand one of the reasons that people do NOT want this drug legalized. The main one being that people can easily "abuse" this drug when in reality they don't need it for anything besides to get high. Marijuana can be used for wrong reasons, but it has NEVER killed anyone while being abused. Also, marijuana could resort in becoming a gateway drug when used far too often and begin wanting a better high as proven in many cases. Whether it be for medical or even recreational weed has become a part of this world. The government in the USA keeps fighting this natural product and destroying lives on account of this drug. It has been proven to be even better than alcohol and many other things in this world. Weed being a natural product has many advantages and disadvantages but the good outweighs the bad. It could help boost the economy because of such high demand. Also, there would be jobs for farmers to grow the product and then in turn sell to other countries such as the Netherlands. It also does not cost a lot to grow and take care of meaning the prices would be stable. The police could also divert their resources to other things such as bigger crimes like murder, theft and others. The theft rate would also go down because drug dealers would not need to steal from each other. Marijuana not being legalized is also a form of intruding on every individual's personal freedom. America is a country that others look at as having the most freedom. Marijuana cannot harm others and I believe it is up to an individual as to what they do with their body. Personal freedom is also intruded on by keeping marijuana illegal. "You can't legislate morality when people disagree about what's considered "moral"." Even if the drug is shown to be harmful, isn't it the right of every person to choose what harms him or her? (balancedpolitics.org 3). To produce different plants, genetic cross–breeding is performed, as well as using different techniques for growing the plant. The main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, which is also the most responsible for its intoxicating effects, is known as delta–9–tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. THC is one of the cannabinoids found in marijuana, and there are over sixty of them. It is the cannabinoid that produces the high, and although there are other cannabinoids present, the effect is different with the absence of THC. They interact with THC to affect its impact in a variety of ways: enhancing or attenuating it, speeding up or slowing down its onset, and influencing how long the effect lasts (Caulkin 7). According to the authors, recent studies have shown that there is another compound in marijuana that is increasing the attention of both scientists and medical marijuana providers known as cannabidiol, or CBD. CBD is not an intoxicating product, and does not produce a high when alone, but some researchers claim it may calm the anxiety produced by THC. Some research suggests that marijuana with a better balance between CBD and THC is less risky than the high–THC, low–CBD strains that now dominate the upper end of the marijuana market (Caulkin 9). With scientists discovering the new compound CBD, it makes them more interested in doing further research in order to discover more roles of other compounds Get more content on HelpWriting.net
