Retractable pens
are pens which
have a spring-
loaded ink
cartridge which
retracts and
extends outside a
protective housing.
By clicking
downward on the
top of the pen, the
tip is extended
7. The origin of the retractable pen is controversial.
The Frawley Pen Company, claims to have
made the "first pen with a retractable ballpoint tip" in
1950.
Pilot Pen from Japan was introduced as the
first retractable fountain pen, and remains a
popular product in the Pilot-Namiki line.

9. At top there are 3 main
components.
1.Upper Cam ( simply
cam)
2.Lower Cam (follower)
3.Push rod(user hand)
The cam is always attached to
the top.
The follower can be fixed on
the refill itself.
The push rod is attached to
the top button which you press
while clicking. 9
10. Cam - The white dot,
shows the direction of
the nib.
Cam is a simple part
in a mechanical
linkage that helps in
providing
reciprocating motion
to the follower (in this
case).
10
11. 11
The follower looks like
this - This can be
attached to the top of a
refill .
The third component
which the push rod, which
is connected to the
clicker on one end . This
pushes the follower.

The measurements taken into consideration when
designing compression springs :-
Outer Diameter - Able to fit inside the pen’s
“barrel” or “tube”.
Inner Diameter - It is also placed over a shaft. The
spring mustn’t be either too tight or too loose around
this shaft.
Free Length - The free length determines how long
your spring will be when unloaded.
13. While the truth is ………….
Much of the work happens mostly at the
top. The spring just stores the energy we
provide through our clicks
and puts a constant upward load on the
refill.
13
14. IS THERE ANY
SCIENCE
BEHIND CLICK
PEN…?????
The fundamental
mechanism used in
pens is a 'Trigger
Mechanism'
(Holding back large
forces and
releasing them
suddenly),
14
15. See the nib of the pen while clicking.
The follower takes five distinct position in the entire
cycle.
Position 1 - Nib is inside.
Position 2 - Nib comes out to maximum. (1st
click sound)
Position 3 - Nib then goes back a bit and then
remains out. (2nd Click sound)
Position 4 - On clicking again, Nib goes to
Position 2 (3rd Click sound)
Position 5 - Nib goes inside (4th Click sound)
15
17. The numbers marked shows the
corresponding position of the follower with
respect to the nib position
17
18. At 1 - the follower is completely inside. When you
make your first click, the follower moves over to
position 2 and then falls to position 3. This is because
the spring is constantly applying the upward force
Now the nib is in position 3. After you click again, it
reaches position 4 (Maximum) and then again falls to
position 5 since spring forces it to go back. (Nib
closed)
18
20. The function of the spring is
to force the follower to follow
the cam profile strictly ,The
plane of the push rod
prevents the follower from
falling completely.
The fourth click sound ( after
it falls in position 5) is the
loudest of all. 20

The Klick Stylus Pen
allows users to
transition seamlessly
from digital to analog
with a single “Klick,”
providing a smooth
ballpoint pen tip for
writing on paper, which
then retracts directly
through the capacitive
stylus tip for resuming
touch screen use.
