Essay about Steroids in Professional Sports
Steroids in Professional Sports Sports is one of the most popular forms of entertainment we have today. Whether it's football, basketball, soccer,
baseball, etc., fans are willing to pay ridiculous amounts of money in order to watch sports. There are few issues in the world of sports. But there is
one issue that stands out, steroids. Although steroids may increase strength, stamina and athleticism, they are incredibly harmful to your body and
should never be used. Still, some athletes persist in taking them, knowing that these substances provide a physical advantage. Although this is true,
steroids can cause serious physical and psychological side effects. Steroids are simply a derivative of the naturally occurring male anabolic hormone

A rookie in the MLB makes 400,000 dollars a year (Goldin). Theses incredible amounts of money are what drive athletes to make it professionally
in their sport, and although steroids have many risks, athletes are willing to test their luck for a big pay day. The main concern with steroids are
the side affects after use. Steroids aren't just a "one and done" type of medication. They have to be used consistently for periods of time in order
for an athlete to see results. "There can be a whole world of side effects," says Dr. Wadler ("Anabolic"). "Some are visible to the naked eye and some
are internal. Some are physical, others are psychological. With unsupervised steroid use, the effects can be irreversible or undetected until it's too late"
("Anabolic"). Steroids are incredibly harmful to the body. The most frightening part is that some of the damage can't even be detected until it's too late.
In addition to his previous comments, Dr. Wadler also stresses that "unlike almost all other drugs, all steroid based hormones have one unique
characteristic –– their dangers may not be manifest for months, years and even decades. Therefore, long after you gave them up you may develop side
effects" ("Anabolic"). There are different side affects that occur depending on the gender of the consumer. Some of the side effects in men include
reduced sperm count, impotence, development of breasts, shrinking of the testicles and difficulty or pain while urinating (DeNoon). Some of the

All athletes want to win, but some want to win more than others. Some athletes will do anything to get the competitive edge over their opponents. Then
they turn to drugs to get the edge. Steroids are the most common drug for athletes to take. It increases muscle mass, body weight etc. Athletes also take
androstenedione, creatine, anabolic steroids and ephedra alkaloids. 2.5–5% of adolescents are using these drugs. There are a lot of banned drugs, just
about 50–130 different drugs that cannot be used in any kind of sport. The United States of America Doping Agency or (USADA) is requiring more
and more drugs tests on the players at the college level and professionals as well. Many of the drugs cause acne, aggressiveness, baldness and many

I also don't understand why the big time athletes are doing drugs when the little pee wee or middle school athletes are looking to them. If those
little guys find out that their hero is on steroids, he or she might start on them too. Only because they think it's okay because if their big time hero
is doing it then they can because they want to be him or her. Those heros have to lead by example they can't just let the kids down. Because sooner
or later the kid who is taking steroids will tell his friend, "Hey take steroids, they make you bigger and our favorite player takes them too"! Then the
other kid will tell his friend the same thing so it will be like a chain reaction going around. Then they don't quit and after a while they have to take a drug
test and those kids fail. The kids ask, "How"? The coach says, "Have you been taking steroids"? The kid says, "Yes how is that bad I've been taking
them because my favorite player takes them." Thats going to happen maybe it already happened I don't know, but I think it's going to happen. I mean
come on, it just isn't right. You have the athletes that want to win and others want to win more than others. It's just unfair that some athletes actually
work in the right way and others stick a needle his or her arm and they get bigger. It's an unfair size, speed, strength advantage. Those certain amount of
athletes that take steroids or any other enhancing drug, they are only cheating themselves. Those athletes that do that think they can do anything they
want to because they are millionaires. Well news flash, you can't do whatever you

Doping can be strictly defined as the consumption of any substance (whether food or drug) to improve one's performance. This definition can be
applied in a variety of situations, from college students drinking coffee in order to stay awake to athletes who take steroids to make them stronger. The
problem with doping is where one draws the line. The drugs used in doping often have detrimental effects to one's health, both mental and physical. In
the short run these drugs improve one's performance, but in the long run they can kill.
Turning sports into a way of life instead of a leisure activity has generated fierce competition for athletes to be the best at what they do. Having a
"natural ability" no longer is enough. One must work...show more content...
In cycling's early days, cyclists consumed "mainly strychnine, cocaine, and morphine, though there were also folksier pick–me–ups, like bull's blood
and the crushed testicles of wild animals" (Barnes, 2000, 97). Doping has become routine in many if not all sports, but these days, athletes use more
sophisticated drugs such as anabolic steroids to improve performance. Many of the drugs used have long–term health risks and cause irregular behavior
in the short run. Athletes use these drugs without regard to the undesirable side effects they may cause because they produce the desired results.
The lure of fame and riches drives athletes to excel in their chosen sport. To win big one must be willing to take risks regardless of the costs. Fans
and sponsors alike show strong support for those who are at the top of their game, not for those who just do well. Athletes and teams who excel are
able to demand more money and more perks, like new stadiums. Coaches are rewarded handsomely for good seasons but fired for losing regardless of
the circumstances. In college football, "depending on the prestige of the bowl, teams receive anywhere from $150,000 to $12 million for playing"
(Eitzen, 1999, 47). When their futures are entwined with their present performance, it is hard for them to reject cheating to attain their goal. Corporate

In America the sport industry is very popular. Americans spend million of dollars to be entertain by sports, whether that be by watching it on TV,
listening to it, or seeing it played live. Steroids are well known around the world such as roids or juice. Unfortunately, there is black spot in this
lucrative sport industry: steroids. Unfortunately, many athletes use steroids. Steroids users can be found among baseball players, body builders,
football players, weightlifters, and swimmers, and other professional sports. If an athlete takes steroids it will cause an unfair advantage between
athletes, steroids makes a person faster, stronger, and makes a person react faster. The purpose of banning steroids is to talk about people taking steroids,

In the sport industry many famous baseball league players face the consequences for taking Anabolic steroids. They have to make the fans happy,
but sometimes they get booed at. For example, Manny Ramirez took steroids so he could hit homeruns, which made fans very happy thus helping
him make more money. Sadly though, his career was over with when he got drug tested and was suspended for 10 days. Fans no longer looked at
him like a good player; instead they looked at him like he was garbage. What could he possibly do to get his respect back? In USA many people
love sports. One of the biggest sports is bodybuilding. People work out to increase body performance and also appearance. One of the biggest
problem with body builders is the use of steroids because they feel the fear that normal training wont be enough to succeed. In Body Building they
have events called Olympia Fitness and Performance were people compete against each other to see who has determined championship status, the
overall physical development, and impact beyond the stage performance. Many body builders do it for the ambition to grow to the top. For example,
Jay cutler is a professional body builder in society. Jay started working out when he was 18 years old, meanwhile, started entering professional
competitions, and won Mr. Olympia four times. Jay Cutler has breakdown the sweat, has felt the pain, and has gain the weight; his net worth is 30

For many years athletes all over the world have strived to increase their capability to succeed in a sport or sports they play. Most train hard, push
their limits, dedicate their time solely on sports, others on the other hand, try to succeed with little amount of effort possible. What is being eluded to
is the use of illegal steroids in sports. This is an issue all over the world in not only professional teams but also college teams or even high school teams.
These steroids give athletes an advantage over all of the other athletes in the world by increasing their physical and mental capability to almost super
human levels. Steroid use should remain illegal. The use of steroids doesn't only affect the user but the people around them too. The use of steroids
may cause elevated blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels, severe acne, premature balding, and reduced sexual function. (pamf.org) "Five to 12
percent of male high school students have used anabolic steroids by their senior year." (pamf.org) The dangers of steroid use can even kill someone,
it is important to warn people about the dangers of it. These dangers include damaged cardiovascular system, liver, and reproductive organs. A major
side effect is mood swings. These mood swings are commonly known as "roid–rage". This is an increase in a person's anger causing outbursts and

Peanuts, hot dogs, the cracking sound of a bat crushing a ball over the left field wall. The ability to thrill so many on limitless levels is a familiar
characteristic associated sports. So much attention, time, and money are devoted to sports these days, maybe even too much. Perhaps all the pressure
is what has sparked steroid use in sports and stimulated numerous controversies over the subject. The use of steroids is an unfair training method for
sports. Unfairness is contrary to laws, marked by deception, and unethical. When the legality, lack of work and advantageousness, and cheating are
examined it is easy to see how steroids are extremely unfair in more than one way.
First of all, the use of steroids...show more content...
Besides medical conditions, the team doctors do not have authority to prescribe steroids to the athlete for no reason. In addition to the legality of
steroid use in the nation, they are also illegal in many professional sports. So the answer to whether or not if steroids are hurting professional sports is
absolutely yes. Perhaps the reason behind steroid use is being able to achieve higher in the sport, which brings up the next concern of steroids being
unfair.
Usage of steroids is an unfair training method because of the advantages created from the drugs and the lack of work done to enhance performance.
Athletes have gotten where they are and achieved all their accomplishments through nothing but hard work. The usage of steroids has corrupted the
work ethic of athletes. Many times it is obvious when athletes are using steroids. Some athletes that have been household names and America has
come to love have had drastic changes to their bodies in the past few years over extremely short periods of time. It is almost impossible to achieve
results such as athletes have recently through natural training methods. Steroids are able to greatly increase muscle size and strength which can
obviously place some players at an extreme advantage over athletes trying to excel naturally. Steroids are also able to increase stamina,

In the world of sports it is not rare to see athletes give their heart and soul for the love of the game. From sunrise to sundown they practice everyday to
perfect their game. Then there are those who take an alternative route. Now athletes are taking performance enhancers such as creatine, androstenedione
and worst of all, anabolic steroids.Steroids are chemicals that act like hormones (substances in your body that regulate bodily functions). Anabolic
steroids are the ones that are abused to build muscle mass or to make your workout longer. They are chemicals of artificial testosterone, which is a male
hormone.

Its not only your appearance that could be at risk but you can also get other health problems. There are coronary artery diseases, ligament injuries, high
blood pressure, changes in your cholesterol level, sterility, and liver disease. For males you can get breast development, kidney disease, headaches,
muscle cramps, abdominal pains, and bone pains.
For females you could get male patterned baldness, smaller breasts, deeper voices, hairy bodies and menstrual irregularities. What I don't understand
is why some take steroids to look better. Would you be attracted to a woman who is just like one of the guys, literally? And girls, would you want
someone who has yellow skin with acne all over his face? I know I wouldn't.Physical problems are just the first step, steroids also give you
psychological problems.
This would be known as 'roid rage. When the user gets very angry and they could possibly swing punches aggressively at anyone within striking

so they can perform better.
Some users also experience depression during parts of the cycles when taking the drug.Anabolic steroids are illegal and are sold over the black market
and there are different kinds. To name some there are Erythropoietin, stimulants, clenbuterol and other drugs that are marketed as steroid alternatives.

In many different types of sports, steroids have been used by elite athletes such as Tyson Gay ( Olympic Runner) and Manny Ramirez ( baseball
player)to enhance their physical performance. Steroids are used in many ways but mostly to increase muscle mass and strength. The hormone in males
is testosterone which is an anabolic steroid. Testosterone has two different effects on your body, it has an "Anabolic" effect that contributes to muscle
building and an "Androgenic" effect that is responsible for body hair, and a deeper voice. Athletes usually take testosterone to boost their performance
in hopes of high achievement in their chosen field of sports. Frequently, the steroids that athletes use are modifications of testosterone for bodybuilding.
It has been documented that in some cases, there are athletes fond of the aggressive rush of taking it. In the sports industry performance enhancing
drugs are illegal and there are serious consequences for getting caught using them. The U.S has brought in many strict laws in the past 20 years and
now illegal steroid drugs are mostly unavailable except through the black market.
Steroids were known first to be invented in the 1930's when scientists discovered that anabolic steroids could help the growth of skeletal muscles in lab
animals. This helped in years to follow for manufacturing synthetic...show more content...

Professional sports are very special in the United States. One reason for this is the spirit of competition. However, steroid use taints this competition.
If steroids were to be completely eliminated from sports, the competition would be much more special because athletes would compete with their
hearts and will, without an extra boost. Also, since not everybody can be a professional athlete, the elimination of steroid use, in my opinion, would
make the fans appreciate the game more and make them feel more relatable. Hopefully someday, fans will be able to watch their favorite sports in
such a fashion. Steroid use by professional athletes is bad because doing so can damage an image of an athlete (if the offense is made public), create

Unfortunately, not all of these dreams come true. Therefore, I think it is wrong when the athletes who are gifted enough to achieve their dream
choose to use steroids. Hazards of Steroids There are many health hazards for both men and women who take steroids. Male side effects of taking
steroids include shrinking of the testicles and breast development. For females, the risks include growth of body and facial hair, development of
deeper voices, and changes in the menstrual cycle. Overall risks of steroids are tumors to the liver and kidneys, cancer, and high blood pressure,
all of which can cause death (NIDA). Even though steroids enhance performance of an athlete, the risks by far outweigh the benefits. No trophy or
championship is worth the possibility of a life threatening disease or an end to life altogether. An article dated in 2004 by ESPN gives an example
of how tragic steroids can be to a sport. "The 1996 National League MVP (Ken Caminiti), who later admitted using steroids during his major league
career and for years battled a drug problem, died (of a heart attack) at the age of 41" (ESPN). Although Caminiti battled many demons that included
additional drug abuse besides steroids, it is still troubling to think that a professional athlete can have his life taken away at a relatively young age. Also
unfortunate is the fact that Caminiti appeared to be cleaning his

In the past three decades, steroids has been becoming a serious problem more than ever in the athletic field. Steroids are anabolic drug "to build"
growth hormones that include the androgens (male sex hormones) principally testosterone and estrogen and progestogens (female sex hormones).
Steroids were first developed for medical purposes. They're used in controlling inflammation, strengthening weakened hearts, preventing conception,
and alleviating symptoms of arthritis and asthma. Unfortunately research has shown that steroids have been abused in almost every kind of sport.
Although steroids contribute to a muscular body, usage should remain illegal because they physically deteriorate and mentally destroy the body.

However, steroids should remain illegal because they physically deteriorate the whole body system. When injected one risks the chances of developing
hematoma and contracting AIDS. In women steroids contribute to the growth of facial hair, enlargements of the clitoris, shrinkage of the uterus,

in sperm count, sterility, impotence, prostate enlargement and growth of female breast. In both men and women hair loss, liver ailments, acne,
atherosierosis and cancer are very common. This dangerous drug shortens the life span up to twenty years and increases the chance of obtaining
diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and hypertension. The side effects and reactions from enduring anabolic steroids are endless.
Along with the physical problems there are also mental 54reactions associated with the usage of steroids. This drug becomes very addictive and
damaging to the mind. It causes violent episodes which an athlete can claim a legal insanity defense to it. They get so wrapped up psychologically that

Using unfair advantages in sports is becoming more common. Many athletes that were considered greats, are being busted for using steroids and
other performance enhancing drugs(PED). Drug testing in sports should be required because it would decrease the skill gap of people using the
PED's, decrease the amount of "cheaters", and reduce the negative health risks with the people that are doping. Health risks are associated with the
use of steroids and other PED's. "Increased aggressiveness and sexual appetite, sometimes resulting in abnormal sexual and criminal behavior, often
referred to as "Roid Rage""(Effects of Performance–Enhancing Drugs). Mood swings are a key sign that someone is using a PED or steroid. Trying
to quit is associated with depression and possibly suicide. Doping at a young age can cause many differences and altercations in the body leading to
inability to perform in the sport you want to. This also happens as you get older. "Liver damage from anabolic steroids can cause a condition called

Most athletes who use steroids take them for the purpose of muscle mass growth and strength. Steroids are not safe because there is no safe way to

long term effect that steroids can have on the human body are unknown. My thoughts on steroid usage in athletes are that I do not agree. I don't

Anabolic steroids, androstenedione, human growth hormone, erythropoietin, diuretics, creatine and stimulants. All of these performance enhancing
drugs have similar effects on the body, which is what makes them so appetizing to these athletes. Increased energy levels, increased muscle mass and
strength, decreased muscle recovery time in–between workouts, resulting in higher performance levels. So it makes you wonder: If steroids are such a
problem, why do athletes continue to take them? Why are they a problem even among high school athletes? Why are some entertainers said to be
using them? Simply put, it's because whatever you think, anabolic steroids work. (Dr. Sanjay Gupta, February 8, 2008). With the increased
performance effects of steroid use, there comes many negative side effects that can be life threatening to the athletes as well as other individuals
around them. Many side effects to these drugs include, but are not limited to hyper and hypo tension, heatstroke, heart palpitations weight gain, damage

the all time leader in home runs, points, and hit percentage, Barry Bonds' name will forever be marked as the "bad guy" because of he used

Essay About Steroids In Professional Sports

  • 1. Essay about Steroids in Professional Sports Steroids in Professional Sports Sports is one of the most popular forms of entertainment we have today. Whether it's football, basketball, soccer, baseball, etc., fans are willing to pay ridiculous amounts of money in order to watch sports. There are few issues in the world of sports. But there is one issue that stands out, steroids. Although steroids may increase strength, stamina and athleticism, they are incredibly harmful to your body and should never be used. Still, some athletes persist in taking them, knowing that these substances provide a physical advantage. Although this is true, steroids can cause serious physical and psychological side effects. Steroids are simply a derivative of the naturally occurring male anabolic hormone ...show more content... A rookie in the MLB makes 400,000 dollars a year (Goldin). Theses incredible amounts of money are what drive athletes to make it professionally in their sport, and although steroids have many risks, athletes are willing to test their luck for a big pay day. The main concern with steroids are the side affects after use. Steroids aren't just a "one and done" type of medication. They have to be used consistently for periods of time in order for an athlete to see results. "There can be a whole world of side effects," says Dr. Wadler ("Anabolic"). "Some are visible to the naked eye and some are internal. Some are physical, others are psychological. With unsupervised steroid use, the effects can be irreversible or undetected until it's too late" ("Anabolic"). Steroids are incredibly harmful to the body. The most frightening part is that some of the damage can't even be detected until it's too late. In addition to his previous comments, Dr. Wadler also stresses that "unlike almost all other drugs, all steroid based hormones have one unique characteristic –– their dangers may not be manifest for months, years and even decades. Therefore, long after you gave them up you may develop side effects" ("Anabolic"). There are different side affects that occur depending on the gender of the consumer. Some of the side effects in men include reduced sperm count, impotence, development of breasts, shrinking of the testicles and difficulty or pain while urinating (DeNoon). Some of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Steroids In Sports All athletes want to win, but some want to win more than others. Some athletes will do anything to get the competitive edge over their opponents. Then they turn to drugs to get the edge. Steroids are the most common drug for athletes to take. It increases muscle mass, body weight etc. Athletes also take androstenedione, creatine, anabolic steroids and ephedra alkaloids. 2.5–5% of adolescents are using these drugs. There are a lot of banned drugs, just about 50–130 different drugs that cannot be used in any kind of sport. The United States of America Doping Agency or (USADA) is requiring more and more drugs tests on the players at the college level and professionals as well. Many of the drugs cause acne, aggressiveness, baldness and many more...show more content... I also don't understand why the big time athletes are doing drugs when the little pee wee or middle school athletes are looking to them. If those little guys find out that their hero is on steroids, he or she might start on them too. Only because they think it's okay because if their big time hero is doing it then they can because they want to be him or her. Those heros have to lead by example they can't just let the kids down. Because sooner or later the kid who is taking steroids will tell his friend, "Hey take steroids, they make you bigger and our favorite player takes them too"! Then the other kid will tell his friend the same thing so it will be like a chain reaction going around. Then they don't quit and after a while they have to take a drug test and those kids fail. The kids ask, "How"? The coach says, "Have you been taking steroids"? The kid says, "Yes how is that bad I've been taking them because my favorite player takes them." Thats going to happen maybe it already happened I don't know, but I think it's going to happen. I mean come on, it just isn't right. You have the athletes that want to win and others want to win more than others. It's just unfair that some athletes actually work in the right way and others stick a needle his or her arm and they get bigger. It's an unfair size, speed, strength advantage. Those certain amount of athletes that take steroids or any other enhancing drug, they are only cheating themselves. Those athletes that do that think they can do anything they want to because they are millionaires. Well news flash, you can't do whatever you Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Steroids In Sports Essay Doping can be strictly defined as the consumption of any substance (whether food or drug) to improve one's performance. This definition can be applied in a variety of situations, from college students drinking coffee in order to stay awake to athletes who take steroids to make them stronger. The problem with doping is where one draws the line. The drugs used in doping often have detrimental effects to one's health, both mental and physical. In the short run these drugs improve one's performance, but in the long run they can kill. Turning sports into a way of life instead of a leisure activity has generated fierce competition for athletes to be the best at what they do. Having a "natural ability" no longer is enough. One must work...show more content... In cycling's early days, cyclists consumed "mainly strychnine, cocaine, and morphine, though there were also folksier pick–me–ups, like bull's blood and the crushed testicles of wild animals" (Barnes, 2000, 97). Doping has become routine in many if not all sports, but these days, athletes use more sophisticated drugs such as anabolic steroids to improve performance. Many of the drugs used have long–term health risks and cause irregular behavior in the short run. Athletes use these drugs without regard to the undesirable side effects they may cause because they produce the desired results. The lure of fame and riches drives athletes to excel in their chosen sport. To win big one must be willing to take risks regardless of the costs. Fans and sponsors alike show strong support for those who are at the top of their game, not for those who just do well. Athletes and teams who excel are able to demand more money and more perks, like new stadiums. Coaches are rewarded handsomely for good seasons but fired for losing regardless of the circumstances. In college football, "depending on the prestige of the bowl, teams receive anywhere from $150,000 to $12 million for playing" (Eitzen, 1999, 47). When their futures are entwined with their present performance, it is hard for them to reject cheating to attain their goal. Corporate sponsors also contribute heavily to the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Steroids In Sports Essay In America the sport industry is very popular. Americans spend million of dollars to be entertain by sports, whether that be by watching it on TV, listening to it, or seeing it played live. Steroids are well known around the world such as roids or juice. Unfortunately, there is black spot in this lucrative sport industry: steroids. Unfortunately, many athletes use steroids. Steroids users can be found among baseball players, body builders, football players, weightlifters, and swimmers, and other professional sports. If an athlete takes steroids it will cause an unfair advantage between athletes, steroids makes a person faster, stronger, and makes a person react faster. The purpose of banning steroids is to talk about people taking steroids, ...show more content... In the sport industry many famous baseball league players face the consequences for taking Anabolic steroids. They have to make the fans happy, but sometimes they get booed at. For example, Manny Ramirez took steroids so he could hit homeruns, which made fans very happy thus helping him make more money. Sadly though, his career was over with when he got drug tested and was suspended for 10 days. Fans no longer looked at him like a good player; instead they looked at him like he was garbage. What could he possibly do to get his respect back? In USA many people love sports. One of the biggest sports is bodybuilding. People work out to increase body performance and also appearance. One of the biggest problem with body builders is the use of steroids because they feel the fear that normal training wont be enough to succeed. In Body Building they have events called Olympia Fitness and Performance were people compete against each other to see who has determined championship status, the overall physical development, and impact beyond the stage performance. Many body builders do it for the ambition to grow to the top. For example, Jay cutler is a professional body builder in society. Jay started working out when he was 18 years old, meanwhile, started entering professional competitions, and won Mr. Olympia four times. Jay Cutler has breakdown the sweat, has felt the pain, and has gain the weight; his net worth is 30 million Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Steroids In Sports Essay For many years athletes all over the world have strived to increase their capability to succeed in a sport or sports they play. Most train hard, push their limits, dedicate their time solely on sports, others on the other hand, try to succeed with little amount of effort possible. What is being eluded to is the use of illegal steroids in sports. This is an issue all over the world in not only professional teams but also college teams or even high school teams. These steroids give athletes an advantage over all of the other athletes in the world by increasing their physical and mental capability to almost super human levels. Steroid use should remain illegal. The use of steroids doesn't only affect the user but the people around them too. The use of steroids may cause elevated blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels, severe acne, premature balding, and reduced sexual function. (pamf.org) "Five to 12 percent of male high school students have used anabolic steroids by their senior year." (pamf.org) The dangers of steroid use can even kill someone, it is important to warn people about the dangers of it. These dangers include damaged cardiovascular system, liver, and reproductive organs. A major side effect is mood swings. These mood swings are commonly known as "roid–rage". This is an increase in a person's anger causing outbursts and ...show more content... The steroids should be used for medical purposes and medical purposes only. The damages that come along with the use of steroids are not worth the short–term strength and agility. In the end your body will be worn down and broken. The use of these steroids ruins the point of trying in the game. The purpose of a sport is to stay fit, compete for awards, and to mainly have a fun competition, a fair one at that. Those who use these drugs show poor sportsman like conduct and demolish that adrenaline feeling from the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Essay about The Use of Steroids in Sports Peanuts, hot dogs, the cracking sound of a bat crushing a ball over the left field wall. The ability to thrill so many on limitless levels is a familiar characteristic associated sports. So much attention, time, and money are devoted to sports these days, maybe even too much. Perhaps all the pressure is what has sparked steroid use in sports and stimulated numerous controversies over the subject. The use of steroids is an unfair training method for sports. Unfairness is contrary to laws, marked by deception, and unethical. When the legality, lack of work and advantageousness, and cheating are examined it is easy to see how steroids are extremely unfair in more than one way. First of all, the use of steroids...show more content... Besides medical conditions, the team doctors do not have authority to prescribe steroids to the athlete for no reason. In addition to the legality of steroid use in the nation, they are also illegal in many professional sports. So the answer to whether or not if steroids are hurting professional sports is absolutely yes. Perhaps the reason behind steroid use is being able to achieve higher in the sport, which brings up the next concern of steroids being unfair. Usage of steroids is an unfair training method because of the advantages created from the drugs and the lack of work done to enhance performance. Athletes have gotten where they are and achieved all their accomplishments through nothing but hard work. The usage of steroids has corrupted the work ethic of athletes. Many times it is obvious when athletes are using steroids. Some athletes that have been household names and America has come to love have had drastic changes to their bodies in the past few years over extremely short periods of time. It is almost impossible to achieve results such as athletes have recently through natural training methods. Steroids are able to greatly increase muscle size and strength which can obviously place some players at an extreme advantage over athletes trying to excel naturally. Steroids are also able to increase stamina, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Steroids In Sport Essay In the world of sports it is not rare to see athletes give their heart and soul for the love of the game. From sunrise to sundown they practice everyday to perfect their game. Then there are those who take an alternative route. Now athletes are taking performance enhancers such as creatine, androstenedione and worst of all, anabolic steroids.Steroids are chemicals that act like hormones (substances in your body that regulate bodily functions). Anabolic steroids are the ones that are abused to build muscle mass or to make your workout longer. They are chemicals of artificial testosterone, which is a male hormone. With higher testosterone you can have more physique and body hair and a deeper voice. It mainly started in the 1950's when some...show more content... Its not only your appearance that could be at risk but you can also get other health problems. There are coronary artery diseases, ligament injuries, high blood pressure, changes in your cholesterol level, sterility, and liver disease. For males you can get breast development, kidney disease, headaches, muscle cramps, abdominal pains, and bone pains. For females you could get male patterned baldness, smaller breasts, deeper voices, hairy bodies and menstrual irregularities. What I don't understand is why some take steroids to look better. Would you be attracted to a woman who is just like one of the guys, literally? And girls, would you want someone who has yellow skin with acne all over his face? I know I wouldn't.Physical problems are just the first step, steroids also give you psychological problems. This would be known as 'roid rage. When the user gets very angry and they could possibly swing punches aggressively at anyone within striking distance. The other mental problem is addiction. Even though the user has an already built body he or she thinks that steroids are still necessary to use so they can perform better. Some users also experience depression during parts of the cycles when taking the drug.Anabolic steroids are illegal and are sold over the black market and there are different kinds. To name some there are Erythropoietin, stimulants, clenbuterol and other drugs that are marketed as steroid alternatives. Without a prescription steroids are

  • 9. Steroids In Sports In many different types of sports, steroids have been used by elite athletes such as Tyson Gay ( Olympic Runner) and Manny Ramirez ( baseball player)to enhance their physical performance. Steroids are used in many ways but mostly to increase muscle mass and strength. The hormone in males is testosterone which is an anabolic steroid. Testosterone has two different effects on your body, it has an "Anabolic" effect that contributes to muscle building and an "Androgenic" effect that is responsible for body hair, and a deeper voice. Athletes usually take testosterone to boost their performance in hopes of high achievement in their chosen field of sports. Frequently, the steroids that athletes use are modifications of testosterone for bodybuilding. It has been documented that in some cases, there are athletes fond of the aggressive rush of taking it. In the sports industry performance enhancing drugs are illegal and there are serious consequences for getting caught using them. The U.S has brought in many strict laws in the past 20 years and now illegal steroid drugs are mostly unavailable except through the black market. Steroids were known first to be invented in the 1930's when scientists discovered that anabolic steroids could help the growth of skeletal muscles in lab animals. • 10. Steroids in Sports Essay Professional sports are very special in the United States. One reason for this is the spirit of competition. However, steroid use taints this competition. If steroids were to be completely eliminated from sports, the competition would be much more special because athletes would compete with their hearts and will, without an extra boost. Also, since not everybody can be a professional athlete, the elimination of steroid use, in my opinion, would make the fans appreciate the game more and make them feel more relatable. Hopefully someday, fans will be able to watch their favorite sports in such a fashion. Unfortunately, not all of these dreams come true. Therefore, I think it is wrong when the athletes who are gifted enough to achieve their dream choose to use steroids. Hazards of Steroids There are many health hazards for both men and women who take steroids. Male side effects of taking steroids include shrinking of the testicles and breast development. For females, the risks include growth of body and facial hair, development of deeper voices, and changes in the menstrual cycle. Overall risks of steroids are tumors to the liver and kidneys, cancer, and high blood pressure, all of which can cause death (NIDA). Even though steroids enhance performance of an athlete, the risks by far outweigh the benefits. No trophy or championship is worth the possibility of a life threatening disease or an end to life altogether. An article dated in 2004 by ESPN gives an example of how tragic steroids can be to a sport. "The 1996 National League MVP (Ken Caminiti), who later admitted using steroids during his major league career and for years battled a drug problem, died (of a heart attack) at the age of 41" (ESPN). Although Caminiti battled many demons that included additional drug abuse besides steroids, it is still troubling to think that a professional athlete can have his life taken away at a relatively young age. Also unfortunate is the fact that Caminiti appeared to be cleaning his Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Many athletes that were considered greats, are being busted for using steroids and other performance enhancing drugs(PED). Drug testing in sports should be required because it would decrease the skill gap of people using the PED's, decrease the amount of "cheaters", and reduce the negative health risks with the people that are doping. Health risks are associated with the use of steroids and other PED's.
