Throughout the semester, we have discussed many different social justice issues. One issue that has stuck with me is gender and racial inequality.
Gender inequality is very important to me because I was raised by a single mother and surrounded by women all the time. I do not believe that anyone
should be payed or treated differently due to their gender. While growing up, I saw that women are capable for doing anything and often times have
to work harder than men to prove themselves. Racial inequality is an issues that is important to me because I feel that all individuals should be equal.

While participating in the student led units, I was able to see how large the wage gap for different genders is. I expected, due to the gender
hierarchy, that women would make less than men, however, I never expected the wage gap to be as large as it was. This issues has stuck with me
since the student led units because this issue is bringing America down the wrong path. America is supposed to be the land of opportunity, not the
land of oppression. Like we said in class, the wage gap is starting to close, however, it is not happening fast enough. I have first hand knowledge of
the gender wage gap because of my family. My aunt has spent her entire career working for different pharmaceutical companies handling their FDA
submission. When my aunt was applying for a new job, she was talking to one of her friends who was applying for the same job about what she was
offered as a starting salary. I do not remember the exact numbers that either was offered, however, I do know that her offer was significantly less than
his offer. My aunt decided to try and negotiate with the company because she knew the amount they offered her male friends. My aunt was successful
in negotiating this deal, however, she should have never had to. The wage gap is a serious issue that men and women face on a daily basis, but we rarely

It is known that males have more testosterone produced in their bodies and females have more estrogen produced in their bodies. Is this what causes
males to be more aggressive and females to be more nurturing and submissive? There was a study which was called The Vietnam Veterans Study. This
study was on males and their levels of testosterone. According to James M. Henslin, in 1985 the U.S. government began a health study of Vietnam
veterans. To be certain that the study was representative; the researchers chose a random sample of 4,462 men. They collected testosterone
measurements from each of the participating individuals. This study showed evidence that when the veterans with higher testosterone levels were
boys, they were more likely to get in trouble with parents and teachers and to become delinquents. As adults they were more likely to use hard drugs,
to get into fights, to end up in lower–status jobs, and to have more sexual partners. This study make it sound like biology is a basis for behavior, but
this is where something known as social class comes into play. The researchers compared high–testosterone men from higher and lower social classes
and found that the men from lower social classes were more likely to get in trouble with the law, do poorly in school, and mistreat their wives. So as

As I said before, I believe inequality, power, and oppression share a connection with each other. However, I would say I feel more of a connection
with inequality and oppression because it has impacted my life beyond just being a women. I would define inequality has an unequal distribution of
rights in the form of discrimination. Because telling me I can't do something because I'm a girl is discriminating against my gender. In the same way, I
believe that oppression means the power of control mentally and emotionally. If you're always going to tell me this is right and this is wrong, I

girl. I'll give you another example, I'm a very outgoing person, so I received a lot of invites to social events, but I never once went to any of them
because I wasn't allowed to. My brother was allowed to go to friends' houses and have sleepovers, but I wasn't because girls don't do that or I'll get

It is only recently that sociology has begun to explore the topic of gender. Before this, inequalities within society were based primarily on factors
such as social class and status. This paper will discuss gender itself: what makes us who we are and how we are represented. It will also explore

This is why gender equity is a major problem facing our schools today. Many girls are having very negative attitudes towards Math and Science.

the class to do the assessment. The observer would write a 'b' if the teacher asked a boy the question and a 'g' if the teacher asked the girl the
question. The observer would also "make a brief notation of the type of reaction you make to each child, whether it's praise, criticism, remediation, or
acceptance"(Sadker , Sadker ,

What Are The Barriers Of Gender Equality
Today, the world is not doing as well as people would like: gender equality has yet to be achieved, climate change is putting millions at risk,
two–hundred million people are unemployed, and people are more stressed than ever. Trying to solve these world challenges, people are working
more and more hours, yet little progress is being made. The solution is rather simple: work less.
Women around the world are under–represented in the workforce, making up less than 20% of CEO positions, and, in America, fewer than 20% of
Congressional positions are filled by women. Reasons for this lack of representation may be due to prejudice, but it is important to recognize that
women are viewed as the primary child caregiver in most families. For this reason, many women take off work for several months after childbirth
and are often thwarted from higher positions because they take leave. If both males and females had shorter work weeks, then both genders would
be able to devote more time to child care, allowing women to continue to work sooner and progress in their fields. In addition, studies have shown
that men who take paternity leave are more devoted to their families and are 50% more likely to help their wives with domestic labor, such as
cooking, cleaning, and laundry. Thus, the shorter work week would lead to both equal representation in the work place and at home, subsequently,

Lorber focuses on the biological differences between male and female. She goes into detail about how women are separated or treated differently
from men just because of a biological difference. In comparison, Tannen discusses the behavior and language of males and females in a classroom
setting, discussing how males take on different types of questions and public speaking differently than females. She discusses how males and females
learn to participate in different ways. Between the two authors, there is one point that serves for the basis of my argument and that would be the
inequality that both genders face due to these gender boundaries. For example, in Lorber's essay, she formulates a issues called the Bathroom
Problem. This is a perfect example of how society tries to make both sexes equal when in reality, they are not. In this Bathroom Problem, we give both
males and females the same amount of bathroom facilities. But as Lorber states on page 732, "[A]lthough an equal number of bathrooms seems fair,
equality would mean more women's bathrooms or allowing women to use men's bathrooms for a certain amount of time." (732). If you want both sexes
to be equal, then help both sexes out by giving them the supplies or facilities that they need. This point also ties into Tannen's argument about how both

The search for equality between men and women is fuelling a never ending war between genders. There are still doubts that women are not equal to

On a personal level I've had to deal with the inequalities of our genders. For example, a male with more than one girlfriend is viewed as a "player" and
not with a negative connotation. On the other hand, a female with more than one male partner is viewed as a "slut" or a "whore". This is a world

opinion, Should I keep quiet just because I'm a woman?" This short sentence expresses how women feel the difference between the male and the female
gender. The song being played world wide and becoming a top hit makes me realize that most women find meaning in the words of the song therefore

This historic rise came about in 2005 and, since then, the pay gap has remained roughly unchanged. Women as a whole experience the gender pay gap
but there is also a racial pay gap. Awoman makes 77 cents for every dollar a Caucasian man makes.
Last year when looking at median hourly pay, black workers earned $18.49 an hour. White workers earned an average of $25.22 an hour. Caucasian
women make about 75 cents to every dollar a caucasian man makes. Asian women make an average of 85 cents to every dollar a caucasian man
makes. For black, Latina, and Native women, that number is significantly lower. On average, Latina and black women who are low–wage earners and
work full time live below the poverty line. White men who are low–wage earners and work full time live above the poverty line.

have become more self–sufficient and independent from the predominant male figure within every historical family. Gender inequality in the
workplace is becoming less common; yet, gender is a factor that affects men and women. Especially women have been subjected to a historical

This consists of six main themes; the theme about gender "...acknowledges that men and women are not the same but insists on their right to be equal
before the law and treated without discrimination."
Currently, according to statistics from the Department of Labor of the United States; of the "123 million women age 16 years and over, 58.6 percent
or 72 million were labor force participants and in the long run, women are projected to account for 51 percent of the increase in total labor force
growth between 2008 and 2018" (U.S. Department of Labor). These numbers will clearly demonstrate to any skeptic that women are leaving behind
their old dependence on men and becoming more autonomous and self–determined to succeed; it sounds great, doesn't it? On the other hand; however,
men are losing as women are gaining. The Department of Labor has reported that men have lost about 4.75 million jobs during the current economic
recession that started in 2007, while women have only lost 1.66 million. Additionally, "the only parts of the economy still growing–health care,
education and government–have traditionally hired mostly women"( Cauchon). Now, as a result, of the statistics that show that females are overcoming
males in the workplace; the gender segregation has created some kind of imaginary "glass ceiling" that impedes both sexes from advancing
professionally and economically.
